Holiday window wonderland starts Saturday on Larimer Square

December 6, 2013

The Yuletide Window Walk transforms Larimer Square storefront windows into creative works of art beginning Saturday with local artists crafting works of art throughout Larimer Square retailers. The exhibit will be up through the end of December.

With the input of each of the 17 participating retail store owners, each artist conceptualized a unique design.

“I love matching artists and their unique individual style to the stores, resulting in breathtaking work,” said curator Lizzie Mara, a professional mixed media artists and illustrator.

Jennifer Mosquera, a well-known local artist and owner of Artistry Events & Design said, “It is very exciting as a visual artist to be paired with a retailer, having the objective to meld creativity with a specific brand in the holiday spirit. I love the idea that we are creating a creative community for a day, and that people will be able to enjoy it through the holiday season.”

Dance and radio unite in a one-night only performance at The Buell

December 6, 2013

Ira Glass of “This American Life” has joined forces with Monica Bill Barnes & Company for an evening dance and radio in

“Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host: Ira Glass, Monica Bill Barnes, Anna Bass” at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Buell Theatre. Tickets are on sale now at www.denvercenter.org.

“This American Life” host Ira Glass has been working with Monica Bill Barnes & Company to invent a show that combines two art forms that – as Glass puts it – “have no business being together — dance and radio.”  One is all words and no visuals.  One is all visuals and no words.  Sounds like a fun evening of dance and stories. It brought down the house in its first test run at Carnegie Hall.

In May 2012 they collaborated on three short dances that were part of a “This American Life” variety show that was beamed into movie theaters nationwide.  It was such a success that they decided to do a full show that combines stories and dance.  Some are performed together onstage by Glass, Barnes and dancer Anna Bass.  For a few, the dancers or the radio host take over for a while.

Glass is the creator and host of WBEZ Chicago’s public radio show “This American Life,” which is distributed by Public Radio International and heard on more than 500 public radio stations, including KCFR, 90.1 FM in Denver; its podcast most weeks is the most popular podcast in America.

Monica Bill Barnes & Company is a contemporary American dance company which has performed in more than 30 venues in New York City.

Single tickets for “Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host” start at $20. To charge by phone, call Denver Center Ticket Services at 303-893-4100. TTY (for deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons): 303-893-9582. Groups of 10 or more, please call 303-446-4829. Additionally, tickets may be purchased at the Denver Center Ticket Office, located in the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex lobby.

Would a mustache make the ‘Manning’? Ron Burgundy thinks so

December 4, 2013

As if Broncos uber QB Peyton Manning isn’t getting enough good publicity from the “legitimate” press these days, in steps fictional anchorman Ron Burgundy (aka funnyman Will Ferrell) with his own “hard-hitting” interview with No. 18 for a SportsCenter segment Thursday, Dec. 5 on ESPN.

Ferrell, who has been playing Burgundy in the news media (he anchored an entire half-hour on a Bismark, N.D., television station recently), will resurrect the character he made famous in “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” debuting on the big screen Dec. 18.

The YouTube trailer for the ESPN bit shows a split screen with the mustachioed anchorman interviewing Manning.

Burgundy opens the interview praising Manning despite the fact that the quarterback has gained significant success without the aid of a hairy lip.

“You look like a succulent baby lamb,” the anchorman observes while Manning chuckles.

Manning’s comeback: “I’ve managed to play quarterback OK without a mustache … Eli (little brother Manning and the New York Giants quarterback) tried to grow one but it didn’t look so good.”

Then Burgundy pulls out a “60 Minutes”-style probing question. “Tell me about your relationship with Thunder.”

Manning pauses and ponders. “You mean our mascot that runs up and down the field every time the Broncos score?”

Burgundy: “Oh yes, I’ve had my eye on that wonderful beast for decades.”

Note to Thunder owner Sharon Magness Blake: If you see a mustachioed man in a burgundy polyester suit lurking anywhere near Thunder, be afraid. Be very afraid.

Manning shows off manners in wedding invitation response

December 4, 2013

Perhaps the sure way to secure an autograph from Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is to invite him to your wedding. Sounds more tidy than playing the post-game waiting game or bidding beau coup bucks on a signed jersey during a charity auction.

In the case of Anna and James, a couple with a wedding last fall, all they had to do was send No. 18 a formal invitation, according to a post on Reddit. A photo of the signed invite went viral after a Redditor “Lackadaisical Romp” posted the pic of the wedding invitation sent by his sister.

Not only did Manning show his Southern gentlemanly manners by responding in a timely manner, but he checked off the “regretfully decline” box and added the inscription, “Anna and James, Best Wishes.”

A Yahoo. com poster quipped, “Perhaps our favorite comment about the photo comes courtesy of Redditor ‘MasterSplinter21′ who writes, ‘Eli (Manning) replied too, but his response was intercepted.’ Even with two Super Bowl rings and the Giants’ current winning streak, poor Eli still gets treated like the little brother.”

Green wins supreme in Food & Wine’s best chili rankings

December 4, 2013
Food & Wine magazine, sponsors of the annual top shelf foodie event the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, has confirmed what we’ve known all along. According to www.foodandwine.com, among the best green chili is the one served at Denver’s Rocky Mountain Chili Bowl, 7305 E. 35th Ave.
Here’s what the Food & Wine folks had to say: “What started as a food truck flaunting the slogan ‘Go green or go home’ has grown into a dedicated green chili restaurant. RMCB’s pork and vegetarian green chilies are available in mellow, medium or hot — spiked with hot Hatch green chiles, jalapeños and secret seasonings. Thanks to implementing a long list of eco-initiatives, the restaurant is also now certified green. (www.rockymountainchilibowl.com).
