Boulder second happiest city in America, poll claims

April 21, 2014

Apparently Boulder is not only skinny, but it’s happy city, too.

Coming off a recent study that Boulder is the least-obese city in America, the People’s Republic of Boulder is ranked second among America’s happiest cities, according to Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index and as reported by Westword.

The Gallup-Healthways report said: “Boulder is famous for its colorful Western history, being a choice destination for hippies in the late 1960s, and as home of the main campus of the University of Colorado, the state’s largest university. Furthermore, the city of Boulder frequently acquires top rankings in health, well-being, quality of life, education, and art.”

Fort Collins was ranked third in the study, which said the home of Colorado State University “is known as one of the towns that inspired the design of Main Street, U.S.A. inside the main entrance of the many ‘Disneyland’-style parks run by The Walt Disney Company around the world.”

The Provo-Orem, Utah earned the moniker as the happiest city in America in the poll?

Really?

Answer Andrew Hudson’s plea to help his friend, Clare Church

April 21, 2014

Help a friend.

My pal, Andrew Hudson, made this plea on Facebook to help his friend, Clare Church:

“I’ve been lucky to perform with Clare Church, and she and her husband, Pete Lewis, are two of the most talented musicians I’ve ever known.

“Clare has a rare condition called dystonia which has affected her embouchure. She presently cannot play her saxophones and woodwinds. Up to 18 months ago, Clare was touring with Doc Severinsen, playing with the Colorado Symphony, performing with Art Lande, playing shows, etc.

“On Sunday, May 4 a benefit is being held to assist Clare in raising funds that will allow her to see a medical specialist in Spain. This jazz jam is from 4-7 p.m. at the Elks Club in Louisville (525 Main St, Louisville, 303-666-8600).

Travel + Leisure cites Euclid Hall as top beer bar

April 18, 2014

Denver’s Euclid Hall has been praised for its food, mainly because of James Beard Award-nominated chef Jorel Pierce and co-owner Jennifer Jasinski, a “Top Chef Masters” finalist.

Add one of America’s best beer bars to the accolades, courtesy of Travel + Leisure magazine.

Here’s some of what T+L wrote about Euclid Hall: “Beer Bitches” Jessica Cann and Jules Bouchard‘s expert sourcing have made this brick-walled 1863 landmark building one of the best beer halls in all of Colorado — and according to Food & Wine, one of America’s best gastropubs in one of America’s best cities for foodies. Locals belly up for 12 taps, beer cocktails, and an extensive menu of bottles and cans quirkily ranked by mathematical difficulty (“Arithmetic” session beers to strong, complex bad boys under “Quantum Mechanics”). Bestsellers like Boulevard’s Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale and Avery IPA get paired with way-above-average bar bites by Jorel Pierce.

There’s beer here in Denver, too, this weekend

April 18, 2014

All the talk may be about the 4/20 marijuana events this weekend, but there’s plenty of stuff to do for beer lovers, too.

Saturday, April 19: John Turk‘s Colorado Craft Beer Show, broadcasting on AM 760, will celebrate its third anniversary today with a special show from noon to 2 p.m. at Lone Tree Brewing. … Trinity Brewing in Colorado Springs will host its annual Saison Farmhouse Rendezvous t noon. Tickets are $45 … BeerAdvocate’s Todd and Candice Alstrom will host their monthly get-together today at Avery Brewing in Boulder from 1 to 5 p.m. … The first BrüFrou beer and food pairing event will take place 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Lowry.

Kirk Montgomery leaving 9News

One of my favorite TV news characters, Kirk Montgomery, is leaving 9News.

According to a Denver Post story, the entertainment reporter-anchor at KUSA-Channel 9 since 2001, is out at 9News. He will move to at WILX, the NBC affiliate in Lansing, Mich., reportedly to become anchor of a new 4 p.m. newscast.

Montgomery announced his exit on his Facebook page Wednesday after joking on the 4:30 p.m. broadcast about growing up in Michigan (and spending time on a llama farm).

He earlier wrote about not being offered a full one-year contract at Channel 9. On Twitter he said, “Mixed emotion I say goodbye to CO and @9NEWS on 5/9/14.”

Good luck, Kirk!
