AURORA SHOOTING VICTIMS’ FAMILIES contend two foundations broke state law by failing to get their permission before using the slain victims’ photographs on a Facebook page and website that encouraged donations.

IT’S DIFFICULT to live healthy lives when communities lack infrastructure and facilities that encourage physical activity, health foundation exec says.

TODAY FROM BLACKTIE’S PENNY PARKER: Matt Selby, the 15-year kitchen captain at Vesta Dipping Grill and Steuben’s, is leaving the organization he helped elevate to top-eats status. “It’s time for a new and different challenge,” Selby said in a statement. “It’s been an incredible 15-year run and I am proud of everything (owners) Josh (Wolkon), Jen and I have accomplished. We have built three successful restaurants together, appeared on four Food Network shows, had multiple visits to the James Beard House and written a cookbook. We have traveled the world and done a ton of philanthropy work together. It is just time for me to take what I have learned and try something on my own. It’s time to leave the nest.”

BLACKTIE’S SISTER COMPANY, Efficient Tickets, will handle ticket sales again this season for Colorado Chorale. The first event, “A Night at the Theatre,” is Oct. 12.

YOU SHOULD USE EFFICIENT TICKETS for your next ticketed event. Online ticketing is inexpensive, consumer-friendly and provides your organization with valuable purchasing and entrance data. Contact Brett McCann-Lehl at 303-339-3819.

Holy Hudson Barrel hot sauce! Chef Selby leaving Vesta family

October 9, 2012

Matt Selby, the 15-year kitchen captain at Vesta Dipping Grill and Steuben’s, is leaving the organization he helped elevate to top-eats status.

“It’s time for a new and different challenge,” Selby said in a statement.  “It’s been an incredible 15-year run and I am proud of everything (owners) Josh (Wolkon), Jen and I have accomplished. We have built three successful restaurants together appeared on four Food Network shows, had multiple visits to the James Beard House and written a cookbook. We have traveled the world and done a ton of philanthropy work together. It is just time for me to take what I have learned and try something on my own. It’s time to leave the nest.”

Wolkon, owner of Vesta, Steuben’s and Ace, delivered the shocking news to the press Tuesday afternoon. For those who have followed Vesta’s growth, Selby was a fixture who’s passion helped increase that restaurant’s popularity and stature in the restaurant community.

“We have been blessed to have Matty with us for the past 15 years. In this business such a long run is a rarity,” Wolkon said. “Chef Selby’s mark will forever be left on Vesta, Steuben’s and Ace.”

Brandon Foster, who has been serving as executive chef of Vesta for five years, will continue to run the kitchen. Brandon Biederman will continue in his role of the last six years as executive chef of Steuben’s and most recently Ace.

“Jen and I will be forever grateful for everything Chef Selby has helped us accomplish,” Wolkon said. “We have grown up together, shared marriages, births, travels, and memorable food and restaurant related experiences.”

RockBar denied dancing; allowed temporary extension of liquor license

October 8, 2012

Jesse Morreale, owner of RockBar, the dive bar at 3015 E. Colfax, has lost his bid to renew his cabaret and liquor licenses for the premises, which were found in violation of the provisions of the permits.

In the final order issued by Denver’s Department of Excise and Licenses on Sept. 26, and released today, Tom Downey, director of Excise and Licenses, allowed RockBar a temporary permit to serve liquor until Nov. 7.

The cabaret license extension was denied immediately so leave your dancing shoes home if you visit Rockbar because the dive bar must cease to allow dancing. Morreale called the decision Denver’s version of the movie Footloose. “Where’s Kevin Bacon?” he asked.

The decision to deny renewal of the licenses came after representatives of neighborhood associations voiced objections to what they deemed as RockBar’s negative impact on the neighborhoods, and police reports citing various criminal activities, all of which Morreale vehemently denies.

It is fully expected that Morreale will appeal the order, and if the judge grants a temporary stay, Rockbar could keep serving liquor for a year or longer.

More on this messy matter in Wednesday’s column.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Uber car service offers uber experience

October 8, 2012

Have U Ubered?

My BFF Devany McNeill has tried out the on-demand car service that recently entered the Denver market, and said she utterly enjoyed the slick service experience.

The car service provides riders with a private driver via iPhone, Android, SMS or web requests. Press a button from the Uber app and the car will arrive in five to 10 minutes. The website even lets you pick out the level of luxury car you’d prefer.

McNeill recently Ubered from the northern Ballpark neighborhood to Capitol Hill.

“I paid $15, which included the tip,” she said. “A cab would have probably been around $11 but Uber was worth the convenience and comfort. Great for those times you want more than a cab but less than a limo. They also give you a bottle of water in case you are uber thirsty.” (Yes, she really said that).

“My Uber experience was stellar. You can watch the car icon on the iPad or iPhone as it gets closer and closer to pick you up so you know exactly how much time you have left to primp.”

She said that she rode in a “tricked out SUV” and that the driver was charming. “Definitely an Uber fan,” she said.

To learn more how you too can Uber, visit www.uber.com.

According to the posting, Bonanno will take over the shuttered Counter space and open Bonanno Brothers Pizzeria in The Vistas at Park Meadows, the outdoor shopping area next to Park Meadows Mall.

October 5, 2012

For the third year in a row, The Ritz-Carlton Denver has achieved the coveted Five-Diamond rating from AAA, the highest in the hospitality industry.

The luxury hotel is the only Denver property with the AAA Five-Diamond rating, and it was the first hotel to achieve that ranking. The hotel is officially the most decorated in the city with five diamonds and four stars.

“Thank you to each and every one of you for your ongoing service commitment to our guests,” said Steven Janicek, The Ritz’s general manager.  “Without your attention to detail, anticipation and fulfillment of guests needs and genuine care and comfort, maintaining and achieving this accolade would not be possible.”

Stand Up For Aurora’s big event is a dinner gala and silent auction on Oct. 14 at Wings Over the Rockies Museum. Silent auction items include art, family rafting and zip-line packages, restaurant gift cards, ski passes, Missy Franklin-signed U.S. Olympic collectables, a Peyton Manning jersey signed by all five of his offensive linemen and golf packages across the state.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Elbow-rubbing in a custom tux at the Emmys

October 1, 2012

Man about town and Denver Farmer’s Insurance man Curt Corrado scored an A-list invite when he was asked to attend the Emmy Awards recently.

Here’s his account of the chi-chi event: “Got my invite from the (Farmer’s) CFO and a party at his house the night before. Limo came and picked me up at the Four Seasons and took us to the event with some champagne and toasts going on.

“Had a custom tux that said Emmys 2012 on the inside seemed to impress some of the red carpet party crowd. Limo to the event and red carpet walk was the highlight for sure. Met every guys’ dream Heidi Klum and also had some time with Seth Meyers from Saturday Night Live.

“Was in the VIP box and schmoozed with some select guests that were in the party up above. Catered party while the Emmys were going on was very cool. Dinner at a posh sushi place next to the Nokia Theatre. Sat next to the Dancing with the Stars cast as opening night was the next night for this season, and they were up for Best Reality Series.

“Lots of buzz on the red carpet that it was the ‘hottest’ Emmys in history. Many of the celebs came in the back entrance (Tom Hanks and Kevin Costner) and passed on the red carpet walk to avoid getting messed up and heat stroked. Was impressed Tina Fey walked the carpet and spent a lot of time talking to fans despite the 100 degree heat.

“Met the lady briefly from Mike and Molly and the Food Network host I e-mailed you that she was gorgeous. Michael J. Fox was the big buzz in the arena and got the loudest applause after presenting. Standing ovation in the arena. Also lots of boos for the Tracy Morgan stunt when they put him on the ground and tried to stage more viewers.”

Way to run with the Hollywood bold names, Curt! And thanks for sharing.
