Penny Parker’s On The Town: Uber car service offers uber experience

October 8, 2012

Have U Ubered?

My BFF Devany McNeill has tried out the on-demand car service that recently entered the Denver market, and said she utterly enjoyed the slick service experience.

The car service provides riders with a private driver via iPhone, Android, SMS or web requests. Press a button from the Uber app and the car will arrive in five to 10 minutes. The website even lets you pick out the level of luxury car you’d prefer.

McNeill recently Ubered from the northern Ballpark neighborhood to Capitol Hill.

“I paid $15, which included the tip,” she said. “A cab would have probably been around $11 but Uber was worth the convenience and comfort. Great for those times you want more than a cab but less than a limo. They also give you a bottle of water in case you are uber thirsty.” (Yes, she really said that).

“My Uber experience was stellar. You can watch the car icon on the iPad or iPhone as it gets closer and closer to pick you up so you know exactly how much time you have left to primp.”

She said that she rode in a “tricked out SUV” and that the driver was charming. “Definitely an Uber fan,” she said.

One-stop shopping

Fresh Nail, Wax & Dry Bar will open a second Colorado location in Cherry Creek North on Friday where clients can get blow-drys, manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials, wine and beer in one place at 180 Steele St.

Denverite Erin Jacobsen, a former client of the Fresh Aspen Grove location, is opening her own Cherry Creek pamper place. The goal of Fresh is to “raise the bar” by offering more services under one roof than other blow-dry only bars. The company plans to open 14 more franchises in Colorado.

Funnyman Fitzgerald

Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald – part Denver vet, part stand-up comedian, part Animal Planet star – will perform a full-length stand-up set and celebrate the release of his new DVD A Wild Life on Oct. 17 at Comedy Works South in the Landmark Village.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and Fitzgerald will be selling and signing DVDs immediately following.

Tickets are $12 with $3 from each ticket sold benefitting the Denver Zoo. Fitzgerald sits on the Zoo’s board of directors. Go to www.comedyworks.com.

Bonanno in the ‘burbs

Frank Bonanno, one of Denver’s top restaurateurs with such stellar eateries such as Mizuna, Luca d’ Italia, Osteria Marco, Lou’s Food Bar and Russell’s Smoke House, is putting a pizza place in the ‘burbs, according to a blog post by 5280 magazine.

According to the posting, Bonanno will take over the shuttered Counter space and open Bonanno Brothers Pizzeria in The Vistas at Park Meadows, the outdoor shopping area next to Park Meadows Mall.

Chipotle’s numero uno

Chipotle Mexican Grill ranked first on a Market Force survey of consumers’ favorite fast-casual Mexican chains, followed by Baja Fresh and Moe’s Southwest Grill. Taco Cabana, Qdoba, El Pollo Loco, Taco John’s, Taco Bell and Del Taco rounded out the top 10 in the survey of 7,600 U.S. consumers.

“Chains that are satisfying consumers’ taste for fresh ingredients, friendly service and a comfortable setting are emerging as the category leaders,” Market Force’s Janet Eden-Harris said. FastCasual.com (10/4), MediaPost Communications/Marketing Daily.

Eavesdropping on one woman to another woman discussing a recent dating experience: “I wouldn’t go on dates. It’s worse than applying for a job.”
