The Rio says ‘hola’ to Frisco

September 24, 2014

The Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, a born-in-Colorado restaurant group, has opened a seventh location in Frisco. This new Rio outpost will be the company’s first new location in almost 10 years and will serve up its famous margaritas, and made from scratch Mexican food to Summit County in a newly designed building.

“Frisco is at the epicenter of year-round recreation in Colorado – which is a huge part of our company culture,” said Rio founder and President Pat McGaughran. “The Rio is the ideal destination for people looking to reward themselves after playing hard in Colorado – whether it’s skiing, biking, hiking or enjoying time with family. This is part of what makes the Rio uniquely Colorado.”

Located off the I-70 corridor at “The Basecamp,” 182 Lusher Court, the Rio is adjacent to the new Whole Foods. It will be the first free standing Rio, built from the ground up and is located next to the bus stop that provides convenient access to area ski resorts including Copper, Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail.

The building offers flexible design that will allow it go from 3,000 square feet to 7,000 square feet over two floors, depending upon seasonable demands, weather conditions and volume. It will boast two large patios ideal for après skiers and summer mountaineers. The menu will include traditional Rio favorites like the Rio Marg, while also offering menu items specific to the Frisco location.

“The Rio’s expansion is largely spurred by demand from the local community,” said CEO Jason Barrett. “We have a strong base of Rio loyalists in Summit County and are looking forward to bringing a sense of vibrancy, variety and Colorado tradition to this growing community. The Rio will add to the spirit of adventure that already exists here.”

The Rio Grande is a 28 year-old Colorado restaurant with six locations along the Front Range, including Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver, Greeley, Park Meadows and Steamboat Springs.

Golden bar beats Buckhorn Exchange for first bar bragging rights

September 22, 2014

Thrillist.com, the website obsessed with building obscure lists, has dug deep to deliver its compilation of “The oldest bar in every state and (Washington), D.C.”

In Colorado, although Denver’s historic Buckhorn Exchange holds bragging rights to possessing Colorado’s No. 1 liquor license, that legal libation document wasn’t issued until 1893, long after the International Bowling Saloon first opened in Golden in 1859. The watering hole later served as a meeting house for the Colorado Territorial House of Representatives, according to Thrillist’s thirsty research.

That bar is now known as the Buffalo Rose Tavern, a live music venue where Thrillist presumes a lot of Coors is consumed. The current building has stood since 1902.

To see the rest of the country’s oldest bars, go to www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/america-s-oldest-bars-the-oldest-bar-in-all-50-us-states-and-washington-dc.
