Wining and dining, three

November 10, 2014

Wrapping up the culinary adventure was a visit to The RiNo Yacht Club, the new bar that is the centerpiece of The Source, a clever collection of restaurants and merchants built by Zeppelin Development in an abandoned building at 3350 Brighton Blvd.

The ironic name, owner Mary Wright explained, tips the cap to the Platt River (“It’s small, but it’s all we have,” she said) while also creating a clubby feel.

Bartender Mclain Hedges created crafty cocktails (including a rye, maple syrup and siracha bitters concoction called You’ll Shoot Your Rye Out), and we sampled snacks from the rolling cart from Acorn. Much like dim sum, you mark your menu to choose bites that cost between two and $12 each.

The decor is more loungy with low communal couches, a drink railing along the perimeter and a stunning media light sculpture above the bar made of 1,400 LED bulbs that play with varying light. The piece was “envisioned” by Evan Miller, with the help of Matt Pinner and Brandon Tarbell, plus a community of volunteers.

Boulder’s Biel and Justin T expecting first baby

November 7, 2014

Former Boulder resident, actress Jessica Biel, and her superstar husband, Justin Timberlake, are expecting their first child, according to a story in the new issue of “Us Weekly” magazine.

According to the story, “Right now they are just enjoying the news for themselves,” one pal tells Us of the ‘Blunderer’ actress, 32, and Timberlake, 33, who dated on and off for five years before getting engaged in January 2012. “They just want a happy baby.”

“Family is important to the couple, who celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary in October. ‘It’s weird because it feels like almost nothing has changed, yet something that you can’t really describe, or something that isn’t tangible, has changed,’ Biel told Ellen DeGeneres of married life after returning from her honeymoon in 2012. “It just feels incredible.”

Local eateries salute to Veterans Day

November 7, 2014

Tuesday is Veterans Day, a great opportunity to thank and celebrate the people who are still with us and the people who we can walk right up to and thank in person.  Here are a few places in town that are honoring America’s veterans in a celebration of their patriotism and willingness to sacrifice and serve our country:

* Session Kitchen (1518 S. Pearl St. – www.sessionkitchen.com) in the Platt Park neighborhood is donating 20 percent of all dinner sales to local non-profit Veterans to Farmers. Veterans to Farmers is devoted to teaching military veterans how to farm in urban environments, and its flagship greenhouse is coming soon to the Curtis Park/Five Points area.  Additionally, Session Kitchen’s philanthropic server Nathan Buss will feature his Tips 4 Tuesdays program that same day and will donate 100 percent of his tips from the evening directly to Veterans to Famers.

* Concepts Restaurants launched its Veteran’s Day promotion last year, serving an estimated 350 of the nation’s active, reserve and retired military a free meal.  Stop by any of its restaurants in Denver, including Humboldt Farm, Fish & Wine (1700 Humboldt St. – www.humboldtrestaurant.com) and Ignite Burgers & Bar ( 2124 Larimer St. – www.ignite-denver.com).  Vets need only show their military ID or wear their uniform to receive their free meal and non-alcoholic drink.

* Spruce Farm & Fish (2115 13th St., Boulder- www. spruceboulderado.com) invites all vets and active military to come and have a meal, as Spruce’s guest, as a way of saying thanks for your service and giving something back to the individuals who risk their lives to protect this country.   Show your active or retired military ID or wear your uniform to receive your free meal and non-alcoholic drink.

Fort festivities brighten holiday happenings

November 7, 2014

The venerable Fort restaurant is offering a lineup of holiday happenings to entertain your out-of-town guests with a slice of Colorado’s history.

Festivities for the whole family are presented by the Tesoro Cultural Center, the local nonprofit committed to protecting and educating the community about the artistic treasures of the American past. All of Tesoro’s events are inspired by Colorado’s rich history and shared, multicultural experiences – 100 percent of all donations and proceeds go towards the organization’s preservation and educational efforts.

Nov. 30: Farolito Lighting & Pinecone Ceremony, honoring Dr. Alexa Roberts, presented by Tesoro Cultural Center

The Tesoro Cultural Center will celebrate the Southwestern tradition of lighting the farolitos – paper lanterns – in the courtyard of The Fort. The festivities usher in the holiday season and honor a member of the community who has enlightened the minds and souls of others. This year’s honoree is Dr. Alexa Roberts, superintendent of the National Park Service Sand Creek Massacre site and Old Bent’s Fort site, for her efforts in uniting the tribes involved in the Sand Creek Massacre with education and understanding in order to inspire healing. This event is free and hosted in the courtyard of The Fort from 4:30 – 6 p.m. Enjoy live music, complimentary apple cider, coffee and biscochitos provided by The Fort. Visit www.TesoroCulturalCenter.org to learn more about the Pinecone Ceremony. For additional events related to the Sand Creek Massacre 150 Anniversary, please visit www.sandcreekmassacre150.com.

Dec. 2: Holiday Auction Party, benefitting Tesoro Cultural Center

Do some holiday shopping at discount prices while supporting historical, cultural and educational programs. Tesoro’s Annual Holiday Auction Party, hosted at The Fort from 6 – 9 p.m., joins GivingFirst’s Colorado Gives Day (24 Hours to Give Where You Live) to raise awareness and funds for nonprofits in Colorado. Entry is free with a suggested $25 donation for an evening filled with music, art, jewelry, dancing, a cash bar and appetizers, compliments of The Fort.
Dec. 24: Las Posadas presented by Tesoro Cultural Center

Celebrated in Mexico and in small Hispanic villages throughout the Southwest, Las Posadas celebrates and commemorates Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter on the night of baby Jesus’ birth. The Tesoro Cultural Center partners with the Christian Life Movement to present this spiritual celebration including a piñata for the kids. The public is invited to join in the candle light procession singing the Posadas songs, escorting a live donkey and sheep to the manger in the outdoor courtyard of The Fort on Christmas Eve from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Complimentary biscochitos, tamales and hot beverages are provided. This event is free and open to the public.

For more information about all Tesoro Cultural Center events hosted at The Fort, contact Carolyn Doran, Program Director, at 303-839-1671 or at cdoran@tesoroculturalcenter.org.
