Radio host Huston laying low after breast cancer surgery

May 9, 2014

Denise Plante, one-half of KOSI radio’s morning show with her cohort co-host Murphy Huston, broke the news on her Facebook page Friday that Huston was diagnosed with breast cancer three weeks ago. He had surgery Monday, and is home resting.

“He will be sharing his journey on air,” Plante posted. “Please (pray) for him and his family. Please reach out to him and leave him a note of encouragement on Murphy and Denise He is at home now, would love to hear from you.”

According to 2009 statistics from the American Cancer Society, male breast cancer is 100 times less common than in women. The risk of men contracting breast cancer is one in 1,000.

On Murphy and Denise’s FB page, Huston reached out to fans: “Now you know what’s going on… Diagnosed with breast cancer three weeks ago… Had surgery on Monday… All is well.. Talk to you on Monday… Murphy.”

From one breast cancer survivor to another (because you will join our club), best of luck, Murph, and hang the heck in there!

Chef Guard moving his Raw Bar spot from Larimer to Lowry

May 9, 2014

Much-lauded chef Troy Guard (TAG, TAG Raw Bar, TAG Burger Bar, Los Chingones, Sugarmill, Guard and Grace) is moving his TAG Raw Bar concept from Larimer Square to Lowry, according to a story in Westword.

In its stead, Guard plans to “re-concept” the TAG Raw Bar space on Larimer Square to a less expensive yet-to-be-named restaurant. (The rap I’ve heard against Guard’s Raw Bar is that while the food is delish, the tab is tall.)

Recognizing that diners are predominantly ordering less expensive menu items such as noodle bowls, rice bowls and salad bowls, and more often eschewing pricier items such as sushi, Guard aims to appeal to more frugal folks.

The old TAG Raw Bar will close on July 1 and reopen as its reinvented self on or around July 15. Lowry’s TAG Raw Bar is slated to open in September. Meanwhile, the prolific chef/restaurateur (emulating successful chef/restaurant owner Frank Bonanno?) is opening a second TAG Burger Bar in the former Subway Tavern space in the Sunnyside neighborhood in northwest Denver.

“I think a TAG Raw Bar will do really well in Lowry, especially since there’s nothing else like it in that neighborhood,” Guard told Westword.

Larimer Associates chief operating officer Joe Vostrejs agreed. “… that kind of concept just doesn’t exist out there, and I think it fits in really well with the collection of dining options that we have in Lowry, all of which are local concepts,” Vostrejs told Westword.

Manning’s the man on the Letterman show

May 7, 2014

Broncos star QB Peyton Manning is two years removed from his 14 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, but talk-show host David Letterman remains a die-hard Manning fan even though the quarterback has left Letterman’s hometown.

After a year off the gridiron because of a potential career-ending neck injury, the Colts released Manning in 2012. Indianapolis’ loss was Denver’s gain.

On Monday, Manning made his fourth appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman” where he talked about his 3-year-old twins (a boy and girl), the ESPN special on the football-famed Manning family, the “Omaha” signal at the line of scrimmage and the career-threatening injury.

Here are some snippets of the conversation, according to a transcript synopsis at www.cbs.com/shows/late_show/wahoo_gazette/.

Dave raves about the ESPN special on the Manning family. (Peyton’s) dad Archie was an All-American and a legendary college and pro football player. The Manning boys, Cooper, Peyton, and Eli and were just normal rambunctious kids. The special included a lot of home movies. Peyton says he wishes there was a bit less footage of Peyton crying.

Dave asked about Peyton’s career-threatening injury that required neck surgery which resulted in nerve damage in his throwing arm. Peyton lost “awareness” of his arm. When he “wanted to throw a football here, the ball went over there.”

Manning admitted there are some throws he can longer do, but has developed other parts of his game. He likens himself to an aging, crafty baseball pitcher who can no longer throw the fastball past the hitter so has to learn other ways to get the batter out.

“What’s with the ‘Omaha Omaha!?” Letterman asks. Fans can hear Peyton bark out ‘Omaha’ when at the line of scrimmage. It is his way of signaling a new play at the line.
Manning admitted he hates how the sideline microphones can pick up what he’s yelling because other teams can pick that up and learn from it. “I’m thinking of barking out some derogatory comments about the NFL Commissioner (Roger Goodell) for everyone to hear instead of ‘Omaha Omaha.’…

Letterman and Manning finished their segments on Broadway to participate in the Late Show Quarterback Challenge (Monday night’s challenge: throw a football through an open window of a passing yellow taxi. Peyton completes two out of three, just like his NFL average. Dave was 0-for-3.

Welker shows Kentucky Derby-goers the money

May 7, 2014

Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker was feeling his oats Saturday after a big win on a horse running in the 140th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

After scoring a bundle of bucks (on an unnamed horse but I’m betting it was on winner California Chrome), Welker was spotted with a friend and a police officer.

According to USA Today, super fan Marc Blandford hailed a hardy, “Wes Welker, how ya doing?” to the Mighty Mouse Bronco.

Then, Blandford told USA Today, Welker proceeded to share the wealth by handing out $100 bills to Blandford and his buddies. The story says that the Bronco handed out roughly six c-notes before the cop put a cease and desist on Welker’s largess.

Sure, Welker was feeling generous, he can afford to. After all, he signed a two-year, $12 million deal in 2013 with the Denver Broncos.

Taco tug-of-war on ‘best’ lists

May 7, 2014

It’s taco time on new “best” lists picked by www.Zagat.com, Westword (www.westword.com) and Food Network Magazine (www.foodnetworkmag.com).

According to Claire Martin’s Culinary Colorado blog, “Zagat.com’s latest best-of list is The Best Tacos in 15 U.S. Cities, of which Denver is one. Surprisingly Pinche Taqueria wasn’t it. Then again, (Zagat’s) winner was also Westword‘s 2013 honoree for Denver’s best tacos…

“Here’s what Zagat.com posted:

“Denver: Cochinita Pibil at La Calle Taqueria y Carnitas (1565 W. Alameda Ave).

“Why We Love It: Housed in a comfy little two-room cottage along the Valverde stretch of Alameda, this absolute gem gives new meaning to the word ‘sumptuous.’ We wholeheartedly recommend every taco on the menu, but since you’ve got to start somewhere, try the cochinita pibil – pork slow-roasted in citrus-achiote marinade…With one bite, the depth of its rich and tangy flavor seems almost boundless; slivers of pickled onion add sharp contrast should you want it, but the stew-thick mixture is perfect as is…

“Insider Tip: While the wall-mounted menus are entirely in Spanish, a printed menu at the order counter offers moderately helpful English translations.”

Here’s the link to the post: www.culinary-colorado.com/2014/05/01/denvers-top-tacos-at-la-calle/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+culinary-colorado+%28CulinaryColorado%29.

And for another opinion, Food Network Magazine’s May issue picks the best 50 tacos in 50 states. where Pinche Taqueria (1514 York St. and 3300 W. 32nd Ave.) and its pork belly taco is vindicated.

Food Network Magazine said, “Visitors drive from several towns away to dig into this pork belly taco: a thick slice braised in orange juice and vinegar, served with candied garlic and a side of dipping jus.”
