‘Tonight Show’ captures stormy on-air exchange between 9News staff
“The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon’s peeps intercepted a live shot exchange between 9News meteorologist Kathy Sabine and anchor Kyle Clark discussing the weather forecast last week.
If you’ve caught their act before, you know that Sabine and Clark love to banter during the newscast. But for a 9News newbie, the exchange was a bit prickly.
Standing in the “backyard” set, Sabine says that something smells like orange blossoms. Clark retorted that he thought the odor was Sabine’s hairspray.
“You don’t have any product (in your hair)?” Sabine asked Clark as she stroked his locks.
Clark: “Don’t ever touch me again.”
Fallon’s line: “The forecast is cloudy with a chance of go to hell, Brenda.”

Mariel Hemingway keynote speaker at mental health network’s 60th anniversary
Oscar-nominated actress and author Mariel Hemingway will provide the keynote address at Shine On, the Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health Network’s 60th anniversary dinner celebration on Oct. 14 at the Grand Hyatt Downtown Denver. Hemingway has spoken openly about her family’s history of mental illness, addiction and suicide.
About her book, released last week, Hemingway said, “My family — my father, my mother, my two sisters and myself — is the kind of family that in today’s era of euphemism and doublespeak, gets called ‘dysfunctional.’”
Her parents had a tumultuous and addiction laden relationship, her two older sisters struggled with mental health and addiction issues as well. Model and actress, Margaux, died as a result of a drug overdose. Mariel Hemingway recounts seven known suicides in her family, including most notably, her grandfather the late Ernest Hemingway, who died by suicide months before her birth.
Hemingway said, “When you’re inside a situation, moving through it day to day, you just think of it as the life you’re living…As I have gotten older, as the events of my youth have become more distant, I have started to think back through the days and months and years, not only to make sense of them now but to think about how I made sense of them back then.”
CEO Joan DiMaria said, “We are really thrilled and so fortunate to have Mariel Hemingway speak at our 60th anniversary celebration because her story helps raise awareness around mental illness, which one in four adults struggle with today. Her ability to cope, grow and forgive is an inspiration and an example we can all benefit from.”
At the event, Hemingway will talk about her recently released book, “Out Came the Sun: Overcoming the Legacy of Mental Illness, Addiction, and Suicide in My Family”, and through a conversation with DiMaria, she will provide insight and encouragement to all those affected by these common conditions.
Since 1955, Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health Network has provided mental health and substance abuse services in the south metro area. The 60th anniversary gala will celebrate past accomplishments and future goal of the organization, its partners and all of the clients and families served. Proceeds from the event support suicide prevention services and mental health crisis care.

Golf caddie earns full scholarship to CU Boulder
Geovani Castillo has caddied at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club during the past three seasons. Starting in golf through The First Tee program at GVR opened his eyes to the benefits of playing the game and the life lessons it teaches.
But he never imagined the summer job would also lead to the opportunity of a lifetime – the chance to earn a full scholarship to the University of Colorado in Boulder.
“When I found out about the Evans Scholarship, I just got even more excited about caddying,” he said. “The day I received my award letter, I was so proud. This is a huge weight off my parents’ shoulders, not having to worry about me. I’m just really happy that I made them happy.”
Castillo is one of 11 awardees of the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship – a full, four-year tuition and housing college scholarship awarded to golf caddies – and will begin college as an Evans Scholar at the University of Colorado this fall.
Evans Scholars are chosen based on demonstrating a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. The scholarship is valued at more than $80,000 over four years.
The WGA, headquartered in Chicago, has supported the Evans Scholars Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930, and has partnered with the Colorado Golf Association since the mid-1960s. The Evans Scholarship is among the nation’s largest privately funded scholarship programs.
Currently, 870 caddies are enrolled in colleges across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than 10,000 caddies – including 433 from Colorado – have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. in 1930. Castillo will join more than 45 other Evans Scholars in the chapter house next fall including GVR’s first Evans Scholar, sophomore Andrea Pickford.
Scholarship funds come mostly from contributions by 26,000 golfers across the country, who are members of the WGA Evans Scholars Par Club. Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $8 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship are donated to the Evans Scholars Foundation. Visit www.wgaesf.org for more information on how to join the Par Club and support our Evans Scholars from Green Valley Ranch.
The Police documentary debuts today in Denver area
The limited distribution of the documentary “Can’t Stand Losing You: Surviving The Police”, the movie based on Andy Summers’ memoir, “One Train Later,” will be making its Denver-area debut today at the AMC Westminster Promenade 24 and the AMC Cherry Creek 8 in the Cherry Creek mall.
The feature-length film features Summers, Sting and Stewart Copeland, and tells of the band’s meteoric rise, headline-grabbing break-up, and reunion 20 years later, through rare archival footage and Summers’ personal collection of photographs.
Directed and edited by Andy Grieve, the film tells of Summers’ musical journey from his early days in the London music scene to his chance encounter with drummer Copeland and bassist Sting and the formation of the neo-punk trio The Police in 1977. From struggling musician to international ‘Rock God’ in two years, Summers’ camera captured the rollercoaster ride to fame and the Faustian trade-off between unprecedented success in the MTV era with love and creative freedom. The film starts as Summers’ prepares for the band’s highly anticipated 2007 reunion tour recalling the 1983 Shea Stadium concert that marked the end.
The film will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and On Demand platforms starting in July preceding a television broadcast.
The Police are considered one of the top 80s rock bands and have won six Grammys, two Brit Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and were inducted into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame. Four of their five studio albums appeared on Rolling Stone’s list of Greatest Albums of All Time. Their final studio album, Synchronicity, topped the American charts for 17 weeks and was number one in both the UK and the US, and sold over 8 million copies in the US alone. They have sold over 75 million records, making them one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time.
The band reunited in 2007 for a world tour that covered the globe and continued into August 2008. The success of the tour made them the world’s highest-earning musicians in 2008 and eighth top grossing tour of all time.

Friends First gala celebrates empowering teens
Friends First will celebrate 22 years of empowering teens across Colorado during the Among the Stars Red Carpet Gala from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the University of Denver’s Cable Center.
The evening will be co-hosted by Xavier Soller, the in-game host for the Denver Nuggets. The gala event will include appetizers, cocktails, a performance by Friends First youth and dancing. Live and silent auctions will raise money for Friends First’s teen and community programs. Auction items will include a weekend getaway to the mountains, day passes to Elitch Gardens, a trip to Disneyland and more.
“I look forward to this gala so much. Not only because we have a blast, but also because we raise money to help kids all over Denver,” said Elycia Cook, executive director of Friends First. “As a child born in the inner city to a single teen mom, many of the successes I’ve had in my life are a direct result of the power of mentoring. I truly believe that mentoring saves lives. I know it saved mine.”
In the last fiscal year, Friends First served 694 teens in their Stars mentoring program and provided positive youth development classroom instruction to 2,179 students. The Stars peer mentors, along with other Friends First volunteers, contributed 5,553 volunteer hours to the programs.
Tickets for the Friends First Red Carpet Gala can be purchased at the door for $90.

Restaurant folks given top honors at Industry Spotlight Awards
When restaurant industry types gather together, food and beverages are a paramount part of the evening. So it was at The Ritz-Carlton, Denver, Monday during the Colorado Restaurant Association’s annual Industry Spotlight Awards.
Awards are given to honor those in the industry who have been mentors, contributed to the community and have pushed the industry to the level that it is today.
But before the formal part of the evening, attendees at the sold-out event strolled, snacked and sipped on perhaps the finest food spread I’ve ever seen at an event.
The Ritz “put on the ritz” with buffet stations bursting with charcuterie; seafood; macaroni and cheese and pan sauteed chicken; a carving station with beef and pork; a fancy salad bar and dessert bars with candy, cookies, chocolate mousse and red velvet cheesecake cupcakes. And did I mention the never-ending array of passed hors d’oeuvres? The multiple bars featured fine wines, local beers and top shelf spirits.
Meanwhile, back at the awards ceremony, five “Signature Dish” awards were presented to people making extraordinary contributions in the hospitality industry and the community. They included:
- Exceptional Newcomer Signature Dish Award: Delores Tronco, Tony Maciag and Dana Rodriguez, Work & Class.
- Outstanding Professional Signature Dish Award: John Imbergamo, The Imbergamo Group.
- Regional Outstanding Professional Signature Dish Award: Kenneth Nelson, Park & Main, Briar Rose Chophouse, Empire Burger and Giampietro Pasta & Pizzeria in Breckenridge.
- Outstanding Media Professional Signature Dish Award: Ed Sealover, The Denver Business Journal.
- Philanthropist Signature Dish Award: Daniel Asher, Linger and Root Down.
The Colorado Restaurant Association also inducted five people into the Colorado Foodservice Hall of Fame:
- Reginald D. Gray, Resort Development Group.
- Toshi Kizaki and Yasu Kizaki, Sushi Den.
- Karen Kristopeit-Parker, Fresh Fish Company,
- Peter M. Meersman, Colorado Restaurant Association.
The Colorado Restaurant Association Education Foundation Reaching for the Stars Knoebel Award was awarded to Valerie Baylie, a Colorado ProStart Teacher at Standley Lake High School.
The evening culminated with the most highly regarded award, the Richard P. Ayers Award for Distinguished Service, being presented to Jim Smith of Republic National Distributing Company. This award recognizes members who have distinguished themselves through their service to the Colorado Restaurant Association, the foodservice industry and their communities.
Also recognized at the event were the Colorado winners of the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation Restaurant Neighbor Award to Epicurean Group and The Kitchen.
