Coohills brings back Beats on the Creek

April 15, 2015

Coohills’ popular Beats on the Creek summer concert series returns from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays starting with the Hazel Miller Band on June 16.

Set on Coohills’ spacious outdoor patio and along the adjacent bridge over Cherry Creek in LoDo, the live music series allows patrons to enjoy the weekly free concerts at high-top tables with the Rocky Mountains visible in the background, as the band plays at the southwest end of the bridge. Guests can always purchase a Colorado Kölsch brew or one of Coohills’ signature cocktails – a Bee’s Sneeze with Aviation Gin, lemon juice, black pepper honey simple syrup, cream and cracked black pepper – from the bars also set up along the bridge.

Each week, the restaurant will offer a silent auction for a Coohills gift card and bottles of wine, as well as community-donated items, the proceeds for which will go directly to the LoDo District. In addition, during the July 21 concert featuring That Eighties Band, guests are invited to don ’80s attire to compete in a best costume contest; the first place winner receives a $100 Coohills gift card and the second place winner gets a bottle of wine.

The full lineup for the 2015 Beats on the Creek, which runs through Aug. 4, is as follows:

* June 16 – Hazel Miller Band.

* June 23 – The Long Run: Eagles Tribute Band.

* June 30 – Funkiphino.

Catching up from a whirlwind week

April 13, 2015

Last week was a busy one for this columnist who pledges to be “On the Town.”

It started with the Colorado Restaurant Association’s Industry Spotlight Awards at The Ritz-Carlton, Denver, which I told you about last week. Deserving folks in the industry awarded, and fab fare from The Ritz culinary staff.

Tuesday was CRA Award-winner Jim Smith‘s retirement from Republic National Distributing Company, at Guard and Grace, where RNDC bought out the restaurant for an awesome sendoff to one of the nicest men in the liquor business.

Smith, who won the Distinguished Service Award the night before at the CRA Spotlight Awards, will stay on with RNDC as a consultant. Chef/owner Troy Guard’s staff of many chefs turned out food befitting a winner like Smith.

Then it was off to the Denver Auto Show’s pre-party hosted by Tim Jackson and his staff at the Colorado Convention Center. The latest, greatest, shiniest new cars were on display early for the VIPs at the benefit event.

Thursday was the invite-only celebration of the opening of Cho77, super chef Lon Symensa’s latest creation after he won over Denver diners with ChoLon.

Cho77, 42 S. Broadway, is a Asian street food restaurant festooned with Vietnamese decorations and fixtures brought back from Southeast Asia. Most notably is the bicycle street cart above the entrance. Cho77 is open daily for happy hour and dinner starting at 4 p.m. No reservations.

And the week wound up with DAM Uncorked, the wildly popular annual fundraiser for the Denver Art Museum where vinophiles gather with glass in hand to sample from hundreds of labels including Duckhorn, Stags Leap and Silver Oak.

Chef Kevin Taylor and his team created buffets in each Museum room consisting of sliders, salads, deep-fried mac and cheese balls, cheese trays and desserts.

A retirement bash for Jim Smith was held at Guard and Grace.

Denver’s Cap Hill makes most beautiful neighborhood list

April 13, 2015

Who knew?

Thrillist.com set out to find America’s 10 Most Beautiful Neighborhoods and lo and behold my ‘hood of Capitol Hill made the list at No. 10.

Here’s what Thrillist said:

“A lot of what makes a neighborhood noteworthy has to do with the people who live there – be they hipsters, yuppies, or the sexiest people on Earth. But as much as these interesting citizens influence their environments, some parts of town stand on their own as more aesthetically pleasing, more architecturally interesting, and more drop-dead-gorgeous than the rest of the city.

“To that end, we’ve combed our great nation from coast to coast and ranked 10 ‘hoods whose curbside appeal is undeniable. From East Coast historic districts to West Coast sea cliffs, these are the most beautiful neighborhoods in America.”

And about Capitol Hill:

“Following the construction of the State Capitol Building in the 1870s, many of Denver’s wealthiest citizens decided to set up an opulent enclave of mansions in the surrounding neighborhood, building their own “Millionaire’s Row”. Many of these towering homes were demolished during the Great Depression, but houses like the Fleming-Hanington House and Alfred Butters House still remain – others, like the Capitol Hill Mansion Bed & Breakfast and the Molly Brown House Museum, have found second lives in the years that followed.

“A more recent section of the neighborhood, nicknamed “Poet’s Row,” features a slew of Art Deco-styled apartment houses that bear the names of famous literary figures, from Mark Twain to Emily Dickinson. Built for the middle class following World War II, these apartments are (unsurprisingly) popular among the city’s younger, bohemian crowd.”
