Penny Parker’s On The Town: Former rocker now rocks locks

Rock n’ roller turned hairstylist Richard Morrill long ago traded a guitar for a pair of scissors when he opted out of the fledgling band Korn to enroll in beauty school – not exactly a logical career path.

“When I found out James Brown was a hair dresser, I figured if he can do it I can do it,” said Morrill, owner of Modefi salon in Jefferson County. “I have great admiration for James Brown.”

His rock n’ roll roots helped him grow a business free run 3.0 v4 femmes working with roots on the heads of famous faces including Gwen Stefani from No Doubt. But when one of his three sons was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, he moved his family and salon to Littleton due to the area’s strong reputation for diabetes treatment.

“Hollywood is in your heart, it doesn’t have to be under your feet,” Morrill said. He opened a 300-square-foot salon, and business blew out the small space. Morrill recently relocated his business to 8174 S. Kipling Parkway, a space four times the size of his former salon.

The public is invited to the grand opening celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, where guests will receive a complimentary sample of one of Morrill’s new hair-care products specifically formulated for Denver’s dry climate.

The new larger location will also be home to Modefi Training Studio, a continuing education program for hair-care professionals that launches Sept. 17. More information: www.modefi.com.

A large life

Denver’s theater community lost one of its true pioneers with the passing of Bob Garner on July 19.

Que sabroso!

Al Lado, the latest creation from prolific chef Richard Sandoval, officially opens today at 1610 Little Raven, right around the corner from Zengo, another Sandoval site.

A gal pal and I gave the lovely Latin tapas and wine bar a taste test run Tuesday, and found it to be a neighborhood gem with a solid wine list and sumptuous snacks.

There are 24 wines by the glass – half or whole glass pours – plus five sangrias, beer and specialty cocktails.

“This kind of scene was not represented over here,” said Bob Bonner, director of operations for Richard Sandoval Restaurants about why the company decided to open the place.

The cuisine is called “global Latin” with all small plates meant for sharing. We tried: olives and almonds, dates stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon, albondigas (meatballs), sizzling rock shrimp and flatbread with arugula, fig and jambon. Delicioso!

Burger Battle’s back

Twelve of the Denver area’s best burgers will battle free run 3.0 v5 femmes bun to bun in the Third Annual Denver Burger Battle at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

This year’s contenders are TAG, ChoLon, The Sink, Highland Tap and Burger, Parkburger, Larkburger, Mateo, Madison St., H Burger, Row 14, Crave Real Burgers and Citygrille.

“While Denver food fans have enjoyed burgers from long-time favorites, the pursuit of being named best burger has become difficult with the explosion of new signature burgers and dedicated burger restaurants,” said Jeremy and Kelly Kossler, Denver Burger Battle founders. “This event showcases the best of the local burger scene, in an iconic venue, serving tastes from rising stars to old favorites and will ultimately crown Denver’s Best Burger.”

After tasting all the entries, attendees will crown the People’s Choice of Best Burger. An expert panel of judges, including chefs Max Mackissock of Squeaky Bean, Daniel Asher of Linger, Hosea Rosenberg of Top Chef and Jenna Johansen from Bravo’s Around the World in 80 Plates, will award Judge’s Choice for Best Burger.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Former Broncos quarterback finally sells mansion

After five years and a price reduction of more than two million dollars, former Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer finally sold his mansion in The Reserve in at Cherry Hills last week.

The home, which sat on the market for several years even after Plummer invested in a $1 million makeover, sold for $2.55 million to Carla G. Shankle, according to Arapahoe County public records. The original asking price was $4.6 million, and Plummer paid $2.7 million for the home in 2004.

The home, which I toured after the remodel, sits on a huge 2.81-acre lot. It’s 7,433 square feet with five bedrooms, seven-and-a-half baths, a pool and tennis courts.

Plummer was traded by the Broncos in 2007 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, free run 4.0 v2 but he opted to retire from football instead. He lives in northern Idaho with his former Broncos cheerleader wife Kollette Klassen and their child, but I’m told the family is moving back to Colorado.

Sam’s No. 3 will have three

Sam’s No. 3, the popular diner with locations in Aurora and downtown Denver, is taking over the Sam Taylor’s BBQ building at 435 S. Cherry in Glendale.

Negotiations started in January, but the deal was inked Friday. Patrick Armatas, one of the Sam’s owners, said the building will undergo a six to seven-month construction.

“The building was tired,” Armatas said. “We’re gutting the whole thing. We’re just keeping some of the walls and the roof. This will be the crown jewel of the Sam’s No. 3s.

After a 15-year-run, Taylor opted to retire so he and his wife can travel, Armatas said.

When the new Sam’s opens, diners can expect the same primarily Greek and Mexican menu served at the other two locations.

Pasquini’s new place

Tony Pasquini, owner of three of his namesake restaurants, will open another pizza spot in the old JR’s space on 17th Avenue in uptown. He expects the place, which will be called Pasquini’s 17th, to open in October.

Le Creuset store coming to Cherry Creek

Le Creuset, a speciality French cookware manufacturer best known for its colorful cast iron products, will be the latest tenant to open at Fillmore Place between First and Second avenues on Fillmore on Aug. 24.

The fancy cookware store signed a lease for a 1,528-square-foot space, which will be Le Creuset’s first full-price single-branded store in Colorado. Stuart Zall of The Zall Company represented the landlord and Lisa Streidl represented the tenant in the deal.

Le Creuset will join other newcomer Jonathan Adler, a new to the market home furnishings and decor store in Fillmore Place. Zall also represented the landlord and Erik Christopher of David, Hicks & Lampert Brokerage represented the tenant.

With these leases in place, there is one remaining empty space in Fillmore Place, which is owned by Realty Management Group.

Mike Blake, spokesman for Cherry Creek North, points out that nearly twice the number of businesses have opened than have closed this year, which was the case in 2011 as well. Currently, the vacancy rate for retail is 7.2 percent, which is the lowest it has been since 2008.

The highest vacancy rate of 13.6 percent occurred in 2009.

Summer menu means lighter fare

Trillium restaurant’s chef/owner Ryan Leinonen has lightened up the menu with new summer seasonal Scandinavian fare.

Dishes include gazpacho, a blend of cucumbers, dill, tomatoes and champagne vinegar topped with fried cornbread croutons and sour cream. The new fish dish is a grilled Lake Michigan Yellow Perch with white bean mousse, tomato cucumber salad, Hollandaise and breadcrumbs made from Rieska, a Finnish flatbread.

And Trillium’s grilled steak is a New York strip served with horseradish potato salad, pickled mushrooms, arugula, friend leeks and Danish blue cheese cream.

The summer menu also features fresh in-season produce including locally grown cherries, summer squash, tomatoes and a variety of berries.

“I think it’s important to update our offerings to reflect the free run 4.0 v2 femmes changing seasonal flavors while staying true to the Scandinavian spirit that separates us from the traditional American bistro,” Leinonen said.

The restaurant, at 2134 Larimer St., is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and till 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, 5 to 9 p.m. Sundays, and brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.

Best Burger Battle comes back to Denver

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Metropolitan State University welcomes new hotel on campus

As Marriott Hotels honcho Tye Turman said during the ribbon cutting for the new SpringHill Suites at the Metropolitan State University of Denver on Wednesday, “This hotel is geared for the XY generation and for the Baby Boomers who think they’re cool, but really aren’t.”

But the Baby Boomers in attendance for the event weren’t offended. After all, new commerce means more money for Denver, and most members of different generations can agree on that.

The new hotel – which features 150 large rooms with work spaces, microwave and mini-fridge, seating area with pull-out sofa bed and a spa-like bathroom – will be managed by Denver’s Sage Hospitality. It will be home to MSU Denver’s new Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center, a 28,000-square-foot educational facility that combines classrooms with interactive laboratories, providing an experiential curriculum for the university’s more than 600 Hospitality, Tourism and Events free run 4.0 v3 femmes students, as well as professionals seeking continuing education.

The new hotel also featured nearly 500 pieces of original artwork created by 21 students, faculty and alumni of MSU Denver. The hotel will also be home to a Red Robin Burger Works restaurant opening in the fall.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: A night of bites in LoDo

Take a bite out of LoDo during the annual LoDo District Inc.’s LoDo Bites tasting event from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 21.

An anticipated 1,500 participants will sample snacks and sip drinks from a host of different restaurants in Lower Downtown.

Holly Barrett, executive director of LoDo District Inc., said, “This event is terrific because it gives people from all over Denver and beyond the chance to try up to 26 different restaurants in one night. They’ll get a snapshot of the restaurants’ atmosphere and cuisine, and it’s a great opportunity for LoDo restaurants to really shine to a crowd that might not normally stop by.”

Girl power

Girl Scouts of Colorado is announcing the 2012 inductees into the esteemed Women of Distinction program in the Denver metro-area during a private reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the home of 1997 Woman of Distinction Barb Grogan.

This year’s seven honorees were selected by their peers and chosen based on their contributions to the community. The women of Distinction commit to supporting Girl Scouts of Colorado and serving Girl Scouts today.

The 2012 Women of Distinction are: Dr. Jandel Allen-Davis, vice president of government and external relations, Kaiser Permanente Colorado; Peg Bradley-Doppes, vice chancellor for athletics and recreation and Ritchie Center operations, University of Denver; Juanita Chacon, realtor, Re/Max; Tricia Downing, disabled athlete and spokeswoman for Challenged Athletes Foundation; Melba Johnston, community volunteer and lifetime service to Girl Scouts; Denise O’Leary, corporate director, US Airways; Maren Stewart, president and CEO LiveWell Colorado.

Gary Mobell, owner of the iconic Blue Bonnet Cafe at 457 S. Broadway, threw a tasting party for press recently to try out some new additions to the menu.

Build a burger

Greenwood Village-based Red Robin opened its third Red Robin’s Burger Works location in Colorado on Monday at 2700 Arapahoe Ave., on 28th Street and Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder.

Burger Works features some classic Red Robin burgers, free run 5.0 femmes but also gives guests a build-your-own-burger option with a variety of toppings including sautéed portabella mushrooms, beer mustard onions or Thai chili ketchup.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Seawell sails into 100

So what would it take for Judi Wolf and Cleo Parker Robinson to perform on stage together? Donald Seawell’s 100th birthday.

On Aug. 1, those of us who were lucky enough to be invited to such an illustrious affair inside of his namesake ballroom, witnessed several testimonials to Seawell, free run 6 femmes who’s made an indelible mark on this city’s theatrical heritage.

But the most entertaining moment came when Wolf and Parker Robinson kicked up their heels in their version of “My Heart Belongs to Donald”.

But as it should be, Seawell had the last word. “This has been a fabulous evening. When I’m asked what it’s like to be 100, I say it’s fun. If I could get more evenings like this, I’d live another 100 years.”

More Sabor

Sabor, the annual food fest to support the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, was a great success at the Denver Botanic Gardens last week.

Restaurants came out to supply best bites while supporting the Chamber. The nearly sold-out affair was muy caliente y sabroso. Que bueno!

Leftys

The right hand will know what the left hand is doing when Euclid Hall Bar & Kitchen, 1317 14th St., joins hands with Left Hand Brewing Co. at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 for a left-handed dinner and beer fest celebrating National Left-Handers Day.

Guests should expect left-handed surprises throughout the event. Right-handed participants are welcome as well. Euclid Hall chef de cuisine Jorel Pierce has prepared a multi-course menu paired with favorites from Left Hand.

Ain’t it grand?

The Grand Hyatt Denver’s general manager Greg Leonard recently announced the opening of Pub 17, the hotel’s new restaurant on the corner of 17th and Welton.

The new pub aims to capture the mood and flavor of the Mile High City by providing neighborhood microbrews, regional wine and fun food fare.

Pub 17 prides itself for serving a bounty of locally grown produce, artisan cheeses and premium meats. Menu items include the Mile High Reuben or chef de cuisine Jay Leandro’s interpretation of mac and cheese.

Burger boys

This month’s edition of Food Network magazine free run 6 v2 femmes includes a bit called “You can eat like a football player,” restaurants are kicking off football season with dishes named after NFL players.

Two of my favorite QBs get the nod with Drew Brees’ Breesy Beef Mac and Peyton Burger.

The Breesy Beefy Mac  is a fave rave for the New Orleans Saints QB who eats the ground beef and macaroni before every game. A chef at the Ritz-Carlton apparently added a version with béarnaise sauce, andouille sausage and ground beef to the menu.

On Manning’s behalf, locally based Smashburger announced that Colorado locations would serve an off-the-menu Peyton Burger topped with orange hot sauce and blue cheese in honor of Broncos’ colors.

Say yes to the address

The Palm in the Westin Tabor Center has secured back its free valet for lunch and dinner. That’s good news to those of us who drive to the steak place and bristle at paying to park.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Rescue Me cast member bringing band to Denver today

As a probie in the New York City Fire Department, Mike Silletti endured countless ribbings from the senior members of 62 Truck, close encounters with a transvestite, a three-way with a stalker and his girlfriend, instances of rushing into burning buildings and personal revelations on the hit FX series Rescue Me during the seven years that actor Michael Lombardi worked on the show.

During a phone interview from New York last week, Lombardi, who will perform with his band Blood Moon Therapy at 10 tonight at the Hard Rock Cafe on Denver’s 16th Street Mall, spoke about his Rescue Me match supreme prem experiences and about putting together the new band post TV series. Part of the proceeds from Friday’s performance will go to support a firefighters’ charity.

“Basically, I have a brand new band,” Lombardi said. “I grew up playing drums and playing in bands. I had a lot of songs and a book of poems written. I filmed Rescue Me in New York for a full seven years. Finally I was able to afford a rehearsal space in New York City.”

In the show, Lombardi and pals play in a bar that he and other firefighters owned to great success. His character, Silletti, considers leaving the crew to be a full-time musician, but changes his mind after a fallen colleague leaves a note imploring the team to stay together.

Lombardi said he got the Rescue Me gig after previously working with series founder Denis Leary. “I worked on a show called The Job with Denis Leary,” he said. “I played the cabana boy. Denis’ character got sunburned, and I ended up hanging with him and his girlfriend the whole episode. About a year after than, I did a show on Comedy Central called Contest Searchlight where I played a young wide-eyed director who won a contest to have a TV show on Comedy Central. A year after that I went for the pilot of Rescue Me.”

Lombardi says the firefighter experience on the show led him to finding a passion to help firefighters’ charities. “Through my relationship with Denis Leary and my experience on Rescue Me, I like to support firefighters as much as I can.” Tickets to the concert are $10 at ticketweb.com.

Celebrating cinco

Five is five. Four of the current group of Colorado chefs – Hosea Rosenberg, Jenna Johansen, Jessica Scott and Jonathan Greschler – will be on hand to celebrate Five’s fifth anniversary from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Fuel Cafe, 3455 Ringsby Court, Denver.

Classy Cathey

Cathey McClain Finlon, former advertising agency owner, has retired after a three-year run as president off the Denver Art Museum.

Finlon, who had been a board member before stepping into the president’s role, will return as a member of the board of trustees. Finlon’s mission was to “lighten the DAM’s business operations – attendance, shop sales, fundraising and more – so we could function efficiently with more resources for the fabulous programming the museum is known for, including collections, educational programming and special exhibitions like Yves Saint Laurent, and this fall’s blockbuster, Becoming Van Gogh. Mission accomplished.”

The museum has created a new structure to replace Finlon as president. Curtis Woitte has been promoted to the role of deputy director, chief financial officer, and Andrea Fulton, previously the director of communication, now serves as deputy director, chief marketing officer.

Greenwood Village-based Red Robin will open its third Red Robin’s Burger Works location in Colorado at 11 a.m. Monday at 2700 Arapahoe Ave., on 28th Street and Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder.

Burger Works features some classic Red Robin burgers, but also match supreme txt femmes gives guests a build-your-own-burger option with a variety of toppings including sautéed portabella mushrooms, beer mustard onions or Thai chili ketchup.
