Beast meets beauty at Colorado Ballet ‘Nutcracker’ photo shoot

November 17, 2013

Do opposites really attract?

They do if you’re talking about Milo the Lynx, University of Colorado Denver’s new mascot, who posed for a photo shoot with some of “The Nutcracker” dancers from the Colorado Ballet.

It was a classic case of beauty and the beast. Milo, a big clumsy flat-footed fur ball by nature, stomped around the shoot while the dainty dancers showed off their skills on pointe.

The Friday photo shoot at Colorado Ballet headquarters on 12th and Lincoln, which served to promote the ballet’s upcoming “Nutcracker” season Nov. 30-Dec. 28, also will be part of the University of Colorado Denver’s holiday e-card this year. The card will feature Milo in a number of festival holiday venues.

Milo was “born” in February as part of CU Denver’s 40th anniversary year.  Colorado Ballet has been performing Tchaikovsky’s Christmas classic, “The Nutcracker,” for more than 50 years.

4-MILO AND DANCERSThe Colorado ballet website says, “The holidays are not complete until you join us for “The Nutcracker,” featuring unforgettable characters, dazzling costumes, classic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary arrangement performed live by the Colorado Ballet Orchestra.”

Performances take place at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

Give us this day our Denver Bread Company bread

November 17, 2013

I, like Claire Walter, Boulder-based author of the foodie blog www.culinary-colorado.com, applaud whenever a local business makes it onto a national “best” list.

So is the case with The Denver Bread Company at 3200 Irving St., which is ranked among America’s 50 best bakeries, according to The Daily Meal website, which gleaned the best from a field of 1,400.

Says The Daily Meal: “Using our criteria and suggestions from our wide-ranging panel of experts … we considered bakeries from every state and narrowed our list of 1,400 bakeries to the top 50 bakeries in America. In the end, bakeries from 24 states and Washington, D.C. stood out for their dedication to the craft.

“Among many other options, The Denver Bread Company bakes its signature boule bread, which has a lighter sour flavor compared to San Francisco’s sourdough, as well as its popular batard, made with unbleached bread flour and organic whole rye, water, salt and yeast. The breads are handmade, and the bakery has more than 20 different kinds of focaccia flavors on its menu. Look for the chocolate chip cookies with walnuts made by Victory Love + Cookies, which was created by a former Denver Bread Company baker and manager who set up shop in the bakery.”

Shoes will help souls without soles

November 17, 2013

Randy E. Johnson, an owner-agent for State Farm Insurance (www.randyejohnson.com), is an official drop-off location for the global anti-poverty organization, Soles4Souls Inc. Johnson’s office is at 8925 Ridgeline Blvd., Suite 101 in Highlands Ranch.

“We are encouraging the community to join us in giving back by dropping off any gently worn or new shoes to our office during business hours and we will ship the shoes to Soles4Souls,” said Johnson. “We are proud to be partnering with this organization doing so much here in the United States, as well as globally.”

It is estimated that approximately 300 million children worldwide – almost as many as the entire U.S. population – live without shoes.  Lacking proper footwear, countless children will not be able or permitted to attend school.  Tens of millions poverty-stricken, barefoot boys and girls will be infected with soil-transmitted parasitic diseases.

For more information, call 303-791-8883.
