Iris and Michael Smith host star-studded wedding for daughter Kaily

August 15, 2014

If you thought keeping up with the Joneses was an unobtainable goal, try keeping up with the Smiths.

Kaily Smith, daughter of former Denver dwellers Iris and Michael Smith, two of the nicest rich people you’d ever want to meet, married Adam Westbrook Aug. 2 with reception entertainment superstar singer John Mayer.

But wait, there’s more. For the wedding rehearsal the night before at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, Calif., guests were moved and grooved by Usher and Stevie Wonder.

The father of the bride, who made his millions in the natural gas industry, spent $5 million on the parties, according to www.tmz.com, which also captured photos.

The pre-wedding party was staged in a carnival theme including a Ferris wheel flanked by walls covered in white roses.

Here’s what TMZ said: “Usher and Stevie Wonder performed Friday night at one of the most baller wedding parties of all time … and the couple getting hitched wasn’t even famous.

“It went down last night at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point during an epic carnival themed rehearsal dinner … filled with games and a huge Ferris wheel.

“To keep things on the beach DL when it got late … people in the crowd had to wear headphones to hear the music. We’re told the couple rented out the entire hotel from Thursday through Sunday.

Kaily, who grew up in Denver, and Adam have homes in Los Angeles and New York, but reportedly call New York home. She’s an actress who made her Broadway debut in the romantic comedy “The Performers.”

CU’s home town takes No. 1 in Best College Towns list

August 15, 2014

Boulder took the top spot and Fort Collins weighed in at No. 14 in Best College Reviews’ list of the 50 Best College Towns.

The website used the criteria of livability, student-to-resident ratio, cultural offerings, school presence and large employers when ranking the country’s top college towns.

Here’s what the site said about Boulder’s No. 1 position: “Boulder is known as a hip and healthy town with a hippy past and great views of the Flatirons. Boulder is one of the nation’s most celebrated towns – in rankings it regularly gets voted the best outdoor town, the brainiest city, one of the top cities for artists and America’s Foodiest Town.

“Though it’s relatively small, the entire city is walkable, there are hundreds of miles of bicycle paths, and an outstanding public transit system. Nature abounds in Boulder with many central roads heading through downtown and ending at trail heads leading into the Rockies. A ring of Green Space surrounds the city, and buildings must remain below a certain height to preserve mountain views. Pearl Street Mall, an outdoor shopping area filled with fine food, book stores, art galleries and coffee shops, is a central Boulder street.

“The University of Colorado, and Naropa University (the nation’s first Buddhist University) provide the central student base for Boulder. For those out of school, numerous science institutes, local artisanal movements, and tech companies call Boulder home. The most notable employers include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations, the Geological Society of America, and the Space Science Institute.”

As to Fort Collins, Best College Reviews said, “Fort Collins is home to Colorado State University and on ‘Money’ magazine’s Best Place to Live in the US list since 2006. A great homegrown music and microbrewery scene complement the town’s collegiate vibes, with one of it’s most attended events hosted by New Belgium Brewery; ‘Tour de Fat’ as the event is called, draws over 20,000 people riding bikes and dressing in costume.”

LoDo eatery closes after 11 days

August 15, 2014

In Denver’s latest installment of restaurant rumble, Provisions Chophaus and Drinkery, at 1550 Blake St., closed its doors after 11 days in business. What? How does that happen?

According to Eater Denver, ownership issues turned out the lights. Co-owners Donne Briggs and Adam Sutter reportedly are in the throes of a financial food fight.

This message was posted on the restaurant’s website:

“I’m so sorry to all the great people who have supported our great restaurant. The idea was great and our core staff was dedicated and amazing. Unfortunately due to one bad apple we have to close the doors. But this is an amazing country with some great laws, so that bad apple won’t get too far from his arrest warrants. But thank you again for everything. Amen.”

Manning brothers reprise rapper role

August 13, 2014

It’s not as catchy as “Football on your phone,” the DirecTV commercial that the Manning brothers (Peyton and Eli),  shot last year on the streets of New Orleans.

But the new TV spot, “Fantasy Football Fantasy” promoting DirecTV’s  new fantasy football channel, again starring the brother QBs, takes their burgeoning rap career to a different (imaginary) place.

The brothers Manning are shot on a (duh!) football field, while chanting the chorus, “Fantasy, fantasy, football fantasy”. The scantily clad female dancers add a touch of eye candy to the piece.

Making cameo appearances are dad, Archie Manning, “Broadway Joe” Namath and Jets running back Chris Johnson’s dreadlocks.

It’s all in good fun, if you can take the leap into believing that white good ole’ Southern boys can rap.

Check out the video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMor6dL0LfI.

Denver Facebook posters pay homage to comedian Williams

August 13, 2014

Denver dwellers joined the rest of the world Tuesday in posting remembrances of comedy genius Robin Williams, who committed suicide Monday at age 63.

While it’s difficult to grapple with the depths of despair and depression that Williams was going through that would end with his death by his own hand, Facebook posters who had the privilege of meeting the kind and gentle man, opted to celebrate his life and his gift.

Here’s what my pal and Denver native Bradley Joseph posted on Facebook:

“I was fortunate to have met Robin Williams nearly 20+ years ago living in NYC, and was invited to the Sony Records Grammys after party at Roseland Ballroom. That evening I was introduced to Robin Williams (who) then took me under his wing and continued to introduce me to A-list celebrities that included Jack Nicholson, Sting, Cher, Trudie Stiler (Sting’s wife) and Ric Ocasek who (was) with his ’80s super model wife, Paulina Porizcova … Robin Williams was a kind soul and gave so much of himself especially to an unsuspecting 25-year-old like me. I will never forget you Mr. Williams.”

True Denverites will remember Robin Williams 'trying out' for the Denver Broncos cheerleaders squad when he was starring in 'Mork and Mindy,' which was based on an alien from Ork visiting a family in Boulder.
