Laugh line: Today’s eavesdropping

September 15, 2014

Eavesdropping on a woman talking about an overnight backpacking trip with her boyfriend and his 13-year-old grandson: “The next morning, looking at the ceiling of the tent, I said to (my boyfriend), ‘I either survived a night in the wilderness or this is what the inside of my coffin looks like.'”

‘Pippin’ hits all the big Broadway notes

September 12, 2014

I was raised by a theater-addicted mother, who instilled in me a lifelong love of stage performances. And although I spent a large part of the ’70s seeing musical and non-musical Broadway blockbusters, somehow my repertoire didn’t include “Pippin,” the 1972 Bob Fosse-directed Tony Award winner, which made Ben Vereen famous.

I filled that missing slot Wednesday during the Denver launch of the national tour of the 2013 revival version of “Pippin,” playing at The Buell Theatre through Sept. 20.

My theater pal Bradley Joseph and I experienced a good old-fashioned spectacular romp into a classic musical event that’s been enhanced by the addition of a circus setting complete with trapeze artists, contortionists and aerial performers. Throw in performances by Lucie Arnaz (daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz), John Rubenstein (the original Pippin character on Broadway who now plays the king) and Matthew James Thomas, the 2013 Tony-Award-winning Pippin character, and you have an out-of-this-world experience.

Arnaz, who plays Pippin’s grandmother, gets her sexy on by showing off her 6o-plus bangin’ bod in a bustier while hanging from a trapeze. Who knew?

“I didn’t know how I could do that until five weeks ago (when she joined the cast),” Arnaz told us during the boffo after-play reception under the big top in the Seawell Ballroom.

For an evening of throw-back theatrical fun, don’t miss “Pippin”. Tickets at www.denvercenter.org.

Extreme Weight Loss Boot Camp at Anschutz on heels of popular TV series

September 12, 2014

With the ABC TV series “Extreme Weight Loss” wrapping up this week, the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center has news for fans of the show who are ready to kick start their own weight loss journey.

As I wrote in a previous column, the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center was home to the cast members this season for the first 90 days of their weight loss transformations.  Now, inspired by the TV show, the center is starting its own one-week destination weight loss program.  Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp will be held in October and is open to anyone with 20 or more pounds to lose.  and former cast member and fan favorite Bruce Pitcher has signed on as a motivational coach.

Holly Wyatt, MD, medical director at the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center and on “Extreme Weight Loss,” is a guiding force, along with series trainers and transformation specialists Chris and Heidi Powell, in helping the show participants safely lose weight.  In her practice at AHWC, Wyatt also works with individuals and small groups to help them realize weight loss and maintenance goals.

“Many of the changes these people make have nothing to do with diet or exercise,” Wyatt said. “We know the most challenging part of losing weight is keeping it off and developing a new way of thinking to keep it off long-term.”

People who take part in Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp will come to AHWC every day for phase one, which is the first week of the weight loss boot camp program, and have hotel accommodations near campus.

“We have 20 years of experience and science backing up the principles we will share at Extreme Weight Loss: Destination Boot Camp,” Wyatt said. “In addition to looking at nutrition and exercise, we will assess individual metabolic function, sleep and stress levels to give participants a look at what they do well and what they might need to work on.”

During boot camp, participants will be assigned a transformation coach for daily sessions of physical activity, mental exercises and nutrition education. Each also will receive body composition, personalized nutritional analysis and wellness assessments. The program is based on the weight loss principles outlined in “State of Slim,” written by Wyatt and James O. Hill, PhD, AHWC’s executive director.

“State of Slim” principles include identifying your personal reasons for losing weight, focusing on positive aspects of weight loss, creating a supportive environment and developing new habits and rituals to make healthy decisions.

After the first week, participants will head home and have the option to continue the transformation in phases two, three and four.  They can take part in 15 weekly online classes with their transformation coach. There will also be an online community for support and guidance throughout the year.

The program will be available to 120 people during the month of October.  For more information on the program please call 1-844-404-2008 or go to http://www.ewlbootcamp.com.
