Jax opens Kansas City outlet as Royals get ready to rumble

October 20, 2014

What did Jax owner Dave Query know that the rest of us didn’t when he chose Kansas City as his first restaurant outpost beyond Colorado’s borders?

Call it coincidence, but the first Kansas City Jax opened in September in a new development adjacent to the tourist attraction Country Club Plaza in the same year that the Kansas City Royals are World Series bound. This new fish house pond could prove profitable in a town that’s waited 29 years for the team to co-host the ultimate baseball competition.

For those who know KS, the restaurant, open from 4 p.m. daily, is located in the Plaza Vista complex (4814 Roanoke Parkway) adjacent to the water-fountain-packed Country Club Plaza and 7 miles west of Kauffman Stadium, the Royals’ home turf.

About sticking his culinary toe in uncharted territory, Query told the Kansas City Business Journal: “We don’t want to go and teach people how to eat good food or what good food is; we want to go to a community where there’s a lot of good food and a lot of intelligence going on,” Query said. “We’re just blown away by the great restaurants and bars that are in the Kansas City area. It’s phenomenal. It doesn’t get as much ink as it deserves with the caliber of craft and culinary skill that’s going on in that town.”

Query opened the first Jax Fish House in 1994 in Boulder and founded the Big F Restaurant Group, which includes nine different concepts. For more information on the Kansas City location, go to www.jaxfishhouse.com/kansas-city/.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts PR pro Susan Stiff will chair the event this year.

In addition to the song stylings of Mueller and Spector, Saturday Night Alive attendees will be able to participate in a surprise box sale, computerized silent auction and bidding via smartphone, dinner, desserts and dancing in the Seawell Grand Ballroom.

Goldberg swims to support Denver Press Club

October 20, 2014

Many people have claimed that Bruce Goldberg is all wet, and it was oh-so-true recently when the president of the board of directors of the Denver Press Club fulfilled his self-appointed mission to swim 2 miles (64 laps) as a fundraiser for the DPC.

Board member Dick Nosbisch and club member Jude DeLorca witnessed the feat along with several bystanders, which took place at the outdoor pool of the Jewish Community Center.

“This was a distance swim record for me,” said Goldberg, who wanted to match his birthday laps and raise money for the nation’s oldest press club at the same time. “Now that people know that I actually did this, I hope they’ll continue making donations to help the club.”

More than $1,100 in donations came in prior to today’s swim, and those who wish to support the DPC can make a donation at http://www.gofundme.com/fatd38.

The donations help support scholarships for journalism majors at University of Northern Colorado, University of Denver, University of Colorado, Colorado State University-Pueblo, Colorado State University-Fort Collins and Metropolitan State University of Denver; and to operate the club.

Today, the club’s nearly 400 members represent print and broadcast media, advertising and public relations, and an assortment of other professions. The roster has included Pulitzer Prize journalists, cartoonists and other notables, such as Damon Runyon, Eugene Field, Gene Fowler, Frederick G. Bonfils, Palmer Hoyt, Lowell Thomas, Lee Taylor Casey, Paul Conrad, Pat Oliphant, Thomas Hornsby Ferril, Carl Akers, Starr Yelland, Stormy Rottman, Lou Kilzer, Greg Lopez, Bob Palmer, Gene Amole, Sam Lusky and Don Kinney.

As one of the few press clubs that maintains its own building, the Denver Press Club has excellent facilities for serving both its members and the community. In addition to complete meal and bar service on its main level in the dining room, the club offers a large meeting and banquet facility on the second floor.
