Denver ranks No. 4 in pretentious U.S. cities

November 13, 2015

Cafe Valet, a St. Louis-based coffee service company for hotel rooms, has deemed Denver the fourth most pretentious city in the U.S.

Is it our obsession with outdoor activities? Pilates? Yoga pants? Microbrews? What?

The the three cities that are allegedly more pretentious? San Francisco ranks No. 1 followed by San Jose and San Diego. After Denver, the rest of the top 10 list includes Portland, Austin, Seattle, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New Orleans.

Here’s what the coffee company said in its online blog: “Noting an increase in macchiato swirls, poetry readings, Moleskines and animal acupuncturists, Café Valet has cited San Francisco as America’s Most Pretentious City in their first annual Pretension Index, a quantitative analysis of pretension levels in America.

“Developed by a team of data scientists, the Pretension Index examines where these modern day latte art lovers are most concentrated, mining data from a variety of sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, Facebook, local business data and more in the 50 most populous U.S. metro areas.

“San Francisco earned a Pretension Index score of 85 out of a potential 100, besting San Jose (64), San Diego (59), Denver (56) and Portland (56). ‘As the standard-bearers for the ‘Regular Joe,’ we fear for San Francisco’s future,’ said Andrew Barnett, who led the analysis for Café Valet. ‘The notion that people are paying $100 for civet coffee to drink while wearing a woolen cap in the summertime is a problematic trend.'”

Cafe Valet says on its website that it analyzed “the top 50 U.S. metro areas, each with populations of 1 million or more. The Pretension Index was calculated based upon a combination of metrics from three categories.”

Union Station condos set to open in 2016

November 13, 2015

East West Partners, a Denver-based developer devoted to building, selling, and managing high-quality real estate, and Amstar Advisers, a Denver-based real estate investment manager, have announced that they will develop the first condominium building in the Union Station neighborhood: The Coloradan on a one-acre parcel at 1750 Wewatta St.

The $200 million, 342-unit condominium project will break ground in summer 2016 with completion of the building planned in 2018. The Coloradan marks the first partnership between Amstar Advisers and East West Partners.

“We are very excited to partner with East West Partners on a luxury condominium development in the heart of downtown Denver,” said Amstar Advisers Managing Director Kim Sperry. “For over 25 years, Amstar and East West have witnessed the growth of this impressive city; that continued growth, coupled with supply-side factors, create an excellent opportunity for condo development.”

With The Coloradan, East West Partners will bring to market the first opportunity to own a piece of the Union Station neighborhood in the last building to be constructed in the Union Station area. The location of the building, between the under construction Whole Foods and the Terminal Building, will complete the circle of development around the Union Station train platform.

“Since opening in 2014, Union Station has quickly become the new heart of downtown Denver, and The Coloradan will be at the heart of Union Station, making it the most exciting new downtown living opportunity in the city,” said Chris Frampton, managing partner of East West Partners. “We are proud of everything we’ve built in Denver and Union Station, but The Coloradan may end up being our crown jewel.”

With emphasis on state-of-the-art healthy living features and amenities, the 19-story building will offer a range of residential options from studios to penthouses, aimed at attracting a diverse group of owners seeking authentic Denver experiences.  Prices will range from $250,000 to $3.0 million. The Coloradan will feature approximately 19,000 square feet of ground floor retail connecting residents to the city and will include a 452-space parking garage.

Planned amenities include a rooftop pool deck and club room, residents’ lobby, fitness room and a residents’ garden. In addition, The Coloradan will be one of the first buildings to be constructed in Denver under the revised Inclusionary Housing Ordinance  enacted by Denver City Council in August 2014. As such, 10 percent of the residences will be dedicated to providing affordable housing.

“This is a major win for affordable home ownership opportunities right in the heart of Lower Downtown,” said Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. “The scale and location of The Coloradan is simply amazing, and we commend the development team for choosing to meet their affordability requirements on-site at such a premier location. This helps to shape a stronger Denver, providing our hard-working residents the opportunity to take advantage of all that our urban center has to offer.”

The development team has engaged GBD Architects as architect of record, GE Johnson Construction Company as general contractor, and BuildMark for construction management services.

Drybar in Cherry Creek North will ‘blow you away’

November 13, 2015

Drybar, a salon that offers blow-dries only, will open its first Colorado location Nov. 20 at 3290 E. First Ave. in Cherry Creek North.

Drybar’s concept: “No cuts. No color. Just blowouts” has captivated a legion of loyal clients nationwide.

Drybar will open in time for the busy holiday season in Cherry Creek’s new Steele Creek luxury development. This 1,800 square foot location will consist of 12 styling chairs, including a VIP room for private parties. The store will employ more than 35 stylists.

“We are so thrilled to finally have the opportunity to bring Drybar to the beautiful Rocky Mountains,” said Alli Webb, founder of Drybar. “To have our first Denver location in the heart of Cherry Creek, along side some of the city’s best shops, restaurants and art galleries, is just so exciting. We look forward to being a part of such a dynamic community.”

Drybar provides professional blowouts at a flat price of $40, regardless of hair length or thickness (wash included!). The list of styles reads like a cocktail menu: the Cosmo (lots of loose curls), the Straight Up (straight with a little body), the Southern Comfort (big hair, lots of volume), the Mai Tai (messy and beachy), the Manhattan (sleek and smooth) the Dirty Martini (tousled and textured) and for the little ladies, the Shirley Temple at $28.

The Cherry Creek shop will feature Drybar’s signature design, including custom Italian chairs, tufted fabric walls, marble bars with built-in phone docking stations and flat screens featuring chick flicks.

Denver Drybar Operating Partner Misty Halaby is opening the Cherry Creek store. Halaby – who spent the last 15 years in media sales here in Denver – has been passionate about bringing the concept to town since she first visited Drybar in New York City in December 2013.

“From the moment that I walked into Drybar in New York, I realized that it is an incredible concept and one that was missing here in Denver,” Halaby said.  “Something as simple as getting your hair done can be an incredible confidence booster and I want to share that happiness with other women.”

Founded by longtime stylist Webb, Drybar has become a regular stop for celebs such as Julia Roberts, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Garner, Chrissy Teigen, Zooey Deschanel, Emma Roberts, Renee Zellweger, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Miley Cyrus and Maria Shriver.

Drybar also offers a full line of professional hair styling products and tools. The brand launched exclusively with Sephora in March of 2013, and is now in all 319 U.S. Sephora locations, including at Cherry Creek Shopping Center and Park Meadows mall.

Appointments can be booked online at www.thedrybar.com, through the Drybar iPhone app or by calling 303-242-3513.
