Travel + Leisure cites Euclid Hall as top beer bar

April 18, 2014

Denver’s Euclid Hall has been praised for its food, mainly because of James Beard Award-nominated chef Jorel Pierce and co-owner Jennifer Jasinski, a “Top Chef Masters” finalist.

Add one of America’s best beer bars to the accolades, courtesy of Travel + Leisure magazine.

Here’s some of what T+L wrote about Euclid Hall: “Beer Bitches” Jessica Cann and Jules Bouchard‘s expert sourcing have made this brick-walled 1863 landmark building one of the best beer halls in all of Colorado — and according to Food & Wine, one of America’s best gastropubs in one of America’s best cities for foodies. Locals belly up for 12 taps, beer cocktails, and an extensive menu of bottles and cans quirkily ranked by mathematical difficulty (“Arithmetic” session beers to strong, complex bad boys under “Quantum Mechanics”). Bestsellers like Boulevard’s Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale and Avery IPA get paired with way-above-average bar bites by Jorel Pierce.

There’s beer here in Denver, too, this weekend

April 18, 2014

All the talk may be about the 4/20 marijuana events this weekend, but there’s plenty of stuff to do for beer lovers, too.

Thanks to Westword for the head’s-up to beer-drinking events around the Denver area, including:

Friday, April 18: At Novo Coffee on Glenarm Street from 5 to 10 p.m. get the first taste of Kurt’s Mile High Malt, a German-style lager from the Wynkoop Brewing Company that was made with Ethiopian Anyetsu coffee from Novo. The beer is based on a family recipe late author Kurt Vonnegut gave to Wynkoop co-founder John Hickenlooper in the 1990s.

Saturday, April 19: John Turk‘s Colorado Craft Beer Show, broadcasting on AM 760, will celebrate its third anniversary today with a special show from noon to 2 p.m. at Lone Tree Brewing. … Trinity Brewing in Colorado Springs will host its annual Saison Farmhouse Rendezvous t noon. Tickets are $45 … BeerAdvocate’s Todd and Candice Alstrom will host their monthly get-together today at Avery Brewing in Boulder from 1 to 5 p.m. … The first BrüFrou beer and food pairing event will take place 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Lowry.

Kirk Montgomery leaving 9News

One of my favorite TV news characters, Kirk Montgomery, is leaving 9News.

According to a Denver Post story, the entertainment reporter-anchor at KUSA-Channel 9 since 2001, is out at 9News. He will move to at WILX, the NBC affiliate in Lansing, Mich., reportedly to become anchor of a new 4 p.m. newscast.

Montgomery announced his exit on his Facebook page Wednesday after joking on the 4:30 p.m. broadcast about growing up in Michigan (and spending time on a llama farm).

He earlier wrote about not being offered a full one-year contract at Channel 9. On Twitter he said, “Mixed emotion I say goodbye to CO and @9NEWS on 5/9/14.”

Good luck, Kirk!

Singles who mingle: Meet Chris

April 18, 2014

Chris, a 27 year old financial analyst, hails from Michigan.  His perfect first date? “First date would be just coffee or cocktails to make sure there is a click. The good stuff comes on date 2 and 3. Maybe a ski date or sunset hike with dinner at the top.”

His free time is spent skiing in the winter and on his motorcycle in the summer.  Ladies, email me, Trisha, aka “The Matchmaker,” Lindeman, at trilind@hotmail.com to connect with Chris and get the story of the giraffe in the photograph.

Let’s remember

April 18, 2014

Here’s hoping you all have a great weekend, but let’s remember April 20 is the 15th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting.

We hope people remember those who that died that day and suffered from the aftermath of the tragedy. We just hope it’s in the back of your minds instead of all the hysteria over the 4/20 weekend.

RiNo’s Walnut Room renovation complete; The Who’s Simon Townsend performs on May 3

April 16, 2014

The Walnut Room has completed an expansion and renovation of the kitchen at its River North location, 3131 Walnut St.

The six-week project doubled the size of The Walnut Room’s original kitchen, providing much-needed space to accommodate upgraded equipment, including two new pizza ovens.

“These changes will allow us to run our food operations more efficiently and provide better quality food to our patrons,” said John Burr, owner of The Walnut Room.

The larger kitchen will make it easier for Chef Jonah Munson to eventually expand the restaurant’s menu, which features an array of pizzas, sandwiches and salads. Music fans may also notice that The Walnut Room’s concert hall also includes a new bar, since the last one was removed to make way for the new kitchen. The music venue still has capacity for 180 people for concerts and can host up to 65 for seated events, such as rehearsal dinners or private receptions.

While concerts were suspended during the construction, the venue has resumed its regular slate of shows, which includes Simon Townsend of The Who on Saturday, May 3.
