Benefit concert features oldies but goodies

July 16, 2014

Call it throwback Wednesday for a cause.

The July 30 concert to benefit the Colorado Freedom Memorial features some musical oldies but goodies including Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon, Terry Sylvester of the Hollies and Denny Laine of the Moody Blues and Wings will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the British Invasion.

The British Invasion concert to benefit the Colorado Freedom Memorial takes place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. July 30 at the Centennial Amphitheater at Centennial Center Park. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at www.modtickets.com. Kid’s tickets are $10, general admission tickets are $25 and VIP tickets, which include a meet and greet with the artists immediately following the concert are $100. Proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to the Colorado Freedom Memorial. Centennial Center park is located at 13050 E Peakview Ave. in Englewood.

The Colorado Freedom Memorial honors every fallen Colorado military veteran by name, from every branch of service and every conflict dating back to the Spanish American War in 1896.  The Memorial, which is located in Aurora, is made up of glass panels on which nearly 6,000 Colorado heroes are honored.

Ahser, host of the British Invasion (50 Years On) concert, returns to Colorado nearly 50 years to the day after Peter & Gordon made their Denver debut at one of Red Rocks’ earliest rock and roll shows on July 23, 1964.

Laine brings to the stage his worldwide hits from his days in Wings with Paul McCartney: “Jet,” “Band on the Run,” “Time to Hide,” “Let Me Roll It,” “Live and Let Die,” as well as his top 10 song with the Moody Blues, “Go Now.”

Sylvester opened for the Beatles at the Cavern, toured the world with the Swinging Blue Jeans on the strength of their hit “Hippy-Hippy Shake, and replaced Graham Nash in the Hollies. With 23 U.S. chart hits, The Hollies moved a generation with a catalog of songs laced with their vocal harmonies such as “The Air That I Breathe.” “He Ain’t Heavy-He’s My Brother” and “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress.” Sylvester was the fifth Liverpool native inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on March 15, 2010, as a member of the Hollies.

The evening also will feature a performance by L.A. recording artist and Colorado native Mollie Weaver with Rick Cowling (Kenny Loggins and Ambrosia).

Arvada Center turns art inside out

June 18, 2014

The Arvada Center’s summer exhibition, Unbound: Sculpture in the Field creates a new outdoor visual arts area on the south grounds of the Center.

Unbound: Sculpture in the Field, began by re-imagining the existing open space with the intent to create a compelling and engaging outdoor sculpture exhibition. In partnership with Englewood’s Museum of Outdoor Arts, which specializes in the placement of site-specific sculpture in Colorado, 27 sculptures were chosen of various sizes and media by 15 Colorado artists.

This creative endeavor evolved into a visually dramatic exhibition spread over a quarter mile that creates a dedicated area to showcase modern and contemporary sculptures. The newly created sculpture field changes the landscape of Arvada Center and brings the programming of the Center galleries inside, out.

Participating artists include: Vanessa Clarke, Emmett Culligan, John Ferguson, Erick C. Johnson, Andy Libertone, Nancy Lovendahl, Robert Mangold, Patrick Marold, Dave Mazza, Andy Miller, Charles Parson, Carl Reed, Joe Riches, Kevin Robb and Bill Vielehr.

Unbound: Sculpture in the Field will open with a free public reception from 6 to 9 p.m. June 26 and runs through September 2015. The sculpture area is free and open to the public during daylight hours. The Arvada Center is located at 6901 Wadsworth Blvd. For additional information, go to https://arvadacenter.org/galleries or call 720-898-7200.

Patxi’s Pizza places shares dough with local nonprofits

Patxi’s Pizza, the Bay Area brand famous for classic Chicago-style stuffed pizza and authentic Italian thin crust, celebrates its 10th anniversary on Wednesday, June 4, with celebrations at the chain’s three metro-area locations, including food and drink specials, contests and more.

Patxi’s (pronounced PAH-cheese) co-founders Bill Freeman and Francisco “Patxi” Azpiroz started the 52 Weeks of Giving program in November 2010. The goal of the program is to provide community support to organizations which share Patxi’s passion for education and children’s health and welfare.

Each of Patxi’s 12 restaurants donates 10 percent of all sales from one day to their partner organization. This includes sales from dine-in guests for lunch and dinner, carry-out and delivery orders, as well as all catering sales.

To date, 52 Weeks of Giving has raised more than $440,444 for partner organizations with that shared mission. So far this year, Patxi’s has raised more than $125,167 through 196 events; on track for more than a 66 percent increase from $166,620 in 2013 .

“We are so proud of this program,” Freeman said. “It is so important to us to give back and be an active participant in our communities.”

Ten percent giving days and nonprofit partners for local Paxti’s are:

  • Monday, June 2, Patxi’s Cherry Creek, 185 Steele St.: Denver City Lacrosse;
  • Wednesday, June 4, Patxi’s Kent Place, 3455 S. University Blvd., Englewood: Children’s Diabetes Foundation of Denver;

Denver chef Eveleigh gets ‘Cutthroat’ in reality show

January 8, 2014

The Food Network reached out (or up?) to The Mile High City to pluck one of the Denver’s chefs, Leah Eveleigh, to battle three other contestants in “Cutthroat Kitchen,” a zany culinary competition hosted by Food Network star Alton Brown.

Eveleigh, the first Denver chef to compete, will be hosting a watch party beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19 (show starts at 8 p.m.) at Street Kitchen Asian Bistro, 10111 Inverness Main St., Englewood.

This is a reality-based culinary competition that pits the chef-testants against each other through cutthroat strategies, mind games and crazy sabotages dreamed up by host Brown.

The Jan. 19 event is the official “Watch Party Nationwide” and “Viewing Party in Denver” where the results will be revealed to the public. Win or lose, this is an opportunity for Denverites to come together and cheer on one of our own homegrown chefs while celebrating the cultural diversity of this great city.

Eveleigh made her culinary debut at the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival as the first Filipino food vendor and then created Tropical Grill Catering.

Join her and eat and tweet during the show (#cutthroatkitchen), and help her represent the Colorado culinary scene.

Light appetizers will be provided and the restaurant’s full menu and bar will be available.

For more information, go to: http://www.foodnetwork.com/cutthroat-kitchen/index.html.
