Correction

January 28, 2015

I wrote last week about Roadhouse Hospitality Group acquiring the 40-year-old Wazee Supper Club at 1600 15th St. in LoDo, making it the 17th restaurant for the family-operated Colorado-based company.

But I was given incorrect information when I wrote that Roadhouse is also the owner of Washington Park Grille.

Greg Sauber and Jeff Estey have owned Wash Park Grille since Aug. 1, 1996.

Boulder-bred young chef makes mark as winner of ‘The Taste’

January 26, 2015

Boulder-bred chef Gabe Kennedy, who now calls New York City home, was the record-setting champion of season three of the ABC cooking competition “The Taste.”

Kennedy, who was named the show’s winner on Thursday, gets his own cooking show on ABC.com, $100,000 and “The Taste” trophy.

The culinary tug-of-war puts 16 contestants – from home cooks to pros – going tongs to tongs to create a single spoonful of food judged by heavyweight foodies Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson, Ludo Lefebvre and Marcus Samuelson.

Kennedy’s journey to victory earned him the most gold stars in the series’ history.

According to the website heavy.com, “Saints And Sinners was the theme for team challenge with two opposite dishes and 90 minutes to cook. The guest judge was the successful Jonathan Waxman, who tasted each contestant’s food blindly…For Gabe, Waxman loved the complexity of his food.

“…Next up was the solo challenge with a Surf and Turf theme. Each cook created two dishes for the judges to taste and this time, Waxman was overseeing their skills in the kitchen and acting as their mentor.

“The final challenge was titled Three Perfect Courses and the inspiration for the challenge was to watch Waxman prepare his own three-course meal. Gabe has a panicking moment when he realizes the sour cherries he has are not fresh. Nonetheless, each of the dishes were delicious and the judges had a tough time figuring out the winner…And the winner was announced as Gabe.” Kennedy works as a private chef based in Brooklyn.

Best sports bar makes the Super Bowl more super

January 26, 2015

Looking for a rocking sports bar to watch Super Bowl XLIX?

Travel + Leisure magazine picked Society Sports and Spirits at 1434 Blake St. as one of the Best Sports Bars in America. Here’s what T+L said:

“Not far from the Pepsi Center, where the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche reign, you’ll find Society Sports and Spirits tuned in to whatever game is on, be it basketball, NHL, or college sports. The alumni crowd is as diverse and as strong as they come, ready to cheer on the Cyclones, OSU Cowboys, or the Razorbacks—though perhaps with their indoor voices. ‘As sports junkies ourselves,’ says owner Wil Evans, ‘we believe it’s of the utmost importance to be able to hear volume for your game.’ This place also pulls for the home team behind the bar, with a diverse array of Colorado beers and more than 45 whiskeys produced in state. As of winter 2014, you can even request a whiskey on tap.”

With all that whiskey and beer, maybe you’ll forget that the Broncos are sitting this one out.

Pismo glass owner shutting stores

January 26, 2015

After 25 years selling fine art and glass at Pismo galleries in Cherry Creek North, Vail and Aspen, owner Sandy Sardella is shutting down doors No. 1, 2 and 3.

Her decision to close was not due to financial hard times – she told The Denver Business Journal that 2014 was her best year ever – she wants to retire.

Sardella, wife of former 9News anchor Ed Sardella, is running “retirement” sales through March 31 at the Cherry Creek store (2770 E. Second Ave.), and through mid-April at the ski resort store to take advantage of the ski season.
