Penny Parker’s On The Town: Golfers defeat the heat to raise money for ProStart Program

June 27, 2012

Despite golf ball melting temperatures, 100 duffers hit the links at Valley Country Club Monday to raise money for the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Foundation’s ProStart Program.

“Now in our 12th year, we raised about $10,000 to support the Colorado ProStart Program currently serving 27 high schools and 800-plus students across the state,” said Mary Mino, president of the CRA’s Education Foundation. “We use these funds to buy curriculum for our high school programs and to provide scholarships for ProStart graduates pursuing their post-secondary education in the food service and hospitality industry.”

The golf tournament winners were: first place $400 prize and traveling trophy to Sysco Denver, second place $300 prize to Egg & I and third place $200 prize to the air jordan 6 Colorado Restaurant Insurance Agency. Longest drive awards went to David Yamamoto and Sarah Hoffman. Joe Coe and Deanna Brown took closest to the pin honors, and longest putt awards went to Alvin Lucero and Barb Meyer.

Our team, the Fearsome 50s, with CRA membership director Barb Simmons, Four Seasons Denver general manager Thierry Kennel, Shanahan’s Steakhouse managing partner Marc Steron and I, left with our pride in tact for not finishing dead last.

Patio peeps

Elway’s Downtown in The Ritz-Carlton Denver is adding an outdoor patio with 42 seats, two TVs and an outdoor fireplace around Aug. 1.

The patio will be surrounded by frosted glass wall panels, a wood trellis and multiple planters. When the temperature dips, the terrace will have standing heaters.

The opening of the outdoor dining area will feature a new appetizer and cocktail menu to celebrate the expansion. Inside the restaurant’s bar, guests can expect to see a new corner booth, extended bar seating and personal HDTVs.

Meanwhile, The Four Seasons Hotel Denver will debut its al fresco dining on Thursday with an evening event sponsored by Hudson Whiskey. Hudson will offer complimentary tastings of its barrel-aged whiskey, and the evening will include a demonstration of cigar rolling and an acoustic guitarist.

Newly added to the patio is a hard canopy providing coverage from the elements, and heaters for chilly nights. The patio is available on a first come first served basis for dining and cocktails.

Sunday supper

EDGE Restaurant & Bar inside The Four Seasons is now offering a 5280 menu with a set three-course dinner for $52.80 per couple ($26.40 per person) on Sundays.

The menu includes a wedge salad with applewood bacon, an eight-ounce New York strip steak or a lemon-grilled whole golden trout, two side dishes to share and sticky toffee pudding with Stranahan’s Whiskey ice cream for dessert. No substitutions.

Barbecue bash

Whole Foods Market on Colorado Boulevard is holding a air jordan 7 barbecue and Colorado craft beer festival on Tuesday to benefit Elephant Talk, a local hunger prevention agency. The barbecue and beer bash from 5 to 9 p.m. (beer tasting starts at 7) precedes the City of Glendale’s fireworks show that starts between 9:15 and 9:30 p.m.

Cost is $7 for food and $12 for beer tastings from Colorado breweries. Whole Foods is located at 870 S. Colorado Blvd.

Swine time

Ambria, the fine food restaurant at 16th and Larimer, is holding a pig roast Friday through Sunday. Grab a pork sandwich and two Great Divide draft brews for $12.

Reservations for lunch and dinner: ambriadenver.com or 303-623-8646.

Eavesdropping on a woman to a man: “What do you do?”

“I’m an attorney.”

“I figured you were an attorney.”

Man’s wife: “Was it the tie?”

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Eight-year run of Caplis and Silverman ends

June 25, 2012

Caplis and Silverman, KHOW  radio’s legal Bickersons, ended their eight-year-long show after the broadcast Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. on 630-AM.

Craig Silverman and his talk show partner and foil Dan Caplis will concentrate their efforts on their first profession as lawyers after their radio contract was not renewed, according to Silverman.

“It was a great run for eight years, and I had a lot of fun,” Silverman said Friday. “I’m sure I will be involved in the public sphere for decades to come. I’m going back to my first love, which is law.”

Pat Connor, president and market manager of KHOW owner Clear Channel said, “We sincerely thank Dan and Craig for their eight years here at KHOW and wish them the very best….as for programming it will be a live and local show beginning in the very near future.”

“The future” begins on July 16 — according to the KHOW website.

I was a Friday afternoon contributor for several years where I discussed my week’s worth of columns at The Rocky Mountain News and subsequently at The Denver Post.

While at The Rocky, air jordan 9 I broke the story about my fairly famous fight with then-Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer who lambasted me over the phone after I wrote about his Broncos cheerleader girlfriend (who he later married), even though he had introduced her to media during a public event.

I will miss their banter on the radio, and wish both of them the best.

Fabulous Fourth

Like most Fourth of July celebrating folks, you probably have your favorite spot to take in the light show, but if you’re looking to venture outside of your norm, here are three alternative venues to celebrate the good ol’ US of A.

The really big “shoe” is Independence Eve presented by Anadarko, a free concert by The Colorado Symphony and fireworks display beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 3 (not the Fourth) at Civic Center Park.

Lawn seating is on a first come basis, so early arrival is highly encouraged. Blankets or low-rise beach chairs are allowed.

At the eastern Denver city limits, there will be a free July 4th community concert by the band The Julius Show and fireworks presented by Oakwood Homes at Green Valley Ranch Amphitheater.

The concert takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. followed by a fireworks show choreographed to music.

The summer concert series continues on Wednesdays July 11 through Aug. 1. For a schedule and directions to the Amphitheater, visit www.skylineusa.com/oakwood.htm.

Aurora’s fireworks show is spectacular especially when you’re watching from a seat on the grounds of Aurora Hills Golf Course.

Tin Cup owner Cindy Jones puts on a heck of a party air jordan 10 where you bring your own meat to grill, pay a small fee for Jones’ homemade sides, and enjoy the free light show that starts at dark.

Eavesdropping on former Gov. Bill Owens talking about a bit in Denver Stories where he and Gov. John Hickenlooper are playing catch: “He may be a better governor, but I’m a better pitcher.”
