THE ASSOCIATED PRESS is running a national story today featuring glitzy galas like Carousel of Hope, the Denver-born and Beverly Hills-based money machine created by socialite Barbara Davis. Davis “started the Children’s Diabetes Foundation in 1977 when her daughter, Dana, was diagnosed with the disease. When Davis broke the news of their daughter’s condition to her husband, the late oil and entertainment tycoon Marvin Davis, “he said, ‘Take care of it.'”

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Get your GRRRRR on for the Denver Gorilla Run

October 17, 2012

This year’s Ninth annual Denver Gorilla Run will be held on Oct. 27 in an attempt to hold onto its Guinness World Record title of most people dressed as gorillas in one location with 1,069 participants in 2009.

This year’s event is expected to attract 1,300 plus participants in their gorilla costumes to enjoy a scenic and fun 5K run/walk or ride through Lower Downtown and the Platte River Valley.

The Denver Gorilla Run, which benefits the Denver-based Mountain Gorilla Conservations Fund, offers a costume contest and three starting waves. The Wheels will go first, runners go second and walkers go third.

The race is followed by an extravagant post-race party featuring a live performance by Under the Radar Band, and food from the Wynkoop Holdings family of restaurants including Lodo’s Bar and Grill and the Breckenridge Craft Brewery.

The run’s start/finish line and post-race party takes place outside of Wynkoop Brewing Co. at 18th and Wynkoop streets. Runners and spectators are invited to attend the celebratory Silverback Block Party.

More info at www.denvergorillarun.com or by calling 720-524-0272.

Super chef

TAG and TAG Raw Bar chef/owner Troy Guard has reconceived his Madison Street restaurant and renamed it TAG Burger Bar.

According to Guard, the people were clambering for burgers, so he wanted to appease the peeps by giving them what they want. Tag Burger Bar opened Tuesday with a menu that includes a milkshake bar with booze as well as serving wine, mixed drinks and a variety of beet-based cocktails.

The burger menu is a build-your-own where guests choose protein, toppings and condiments. The menu also includes Baja fish tacos, fried chicken, deep-fried pickles, beef brisket nachos, hand-cut crispy fries and the Kung Fu Panda Salad.

Tag Burger Bar is open for lunch and dinner daily with brunch served Saturday and Sunday. Reservations: www.opentable.com.

Anschutz Center coming to Park Hill

Those in attendance will include: Libby Anschutz, John Arigone, Albus Brooks, Aaron Miripol, Lindsay Neil, Terrance Roberts, laDawn Sullivan and Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver members.

Good taste

A Taste of Greenwood Village put on the feedbag Monday at the Doubletree DTC Hotel at 7801 E. Orchard Road. The 12th annual event had the added backdrop of the Broncos beating their nemesis Oakland Raiders on Monday Night Football on huge high def TVs stationed throughout the venue.

Participating restaurants included Bonefish Grill, The Bundt Shoppe , C.B. & Potts, Chinook Tavern, The Delectable Egg, Fiocchi’s, Garcia’s, Gridiron Grille, Hapa, India’s Castle, Jing, Las Brisas, ModMarket, Rising Roll, Rock-a-Billies, Sahara, Subway, Ted’s Montana Grill, Woody Creek Bakery & Cafe, Yanni’s, Yayas, and liquor from Republic National Distributing Co.

Freebie

A record 22 museums will open their doors for free during Denver’s Night at the Museums, an idea that has been wildly successful in Europe, during the sixth annual Night at the Museums, where the city’s t0p museums will stay open from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

“What started in Paris, has now spread across Europe with 3,000 museums participating this year in the European Night of the Museums,” said Richard Scharf, president and CEO of Visit Denver.

Over the EDGE

October is spook-tacular at EDGE inside The Four Seasons Denver with kettle corn-infused cocktails, vampire-theme snacks dubbed “bar bites” (watch your neck), even trick or treating. Stop into EDGE for some Halloween treats or to The Spa for some fall pampering.

The Spa is offering guests the option of a trick or treat from a shimmering bowl of gemstones from Oct. 26 through 31. Each color gemstone will present a different treat from a $25 gift card at EDGE to a $25 gift card toward a future spa treatment or 25 percent off a retail purchase at the spa.

Guests who reserve a minimum of a 60-minute treatment are given access to the hotel’s fitness center featuring TechnoGym equipment including treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, let machines, lower back and abdominal machines, weight bench units, exercise balls and more. Complimentary valet parking is provided to all spa guests who experience a 60-minute treatment. Reservations: 303-389-3020.

Eavesdropping on a man: “Went to the flea market. Picked up some flea milk, flea bread, flea eggs… paid with flea money but because it wasn’t real, I had to flee.”

BILL AND MELINDA GATES, whose foundation has poured $10 million into a Colorado program testing ways to combine new state standards and teacher evaluations, flew here this week on a semi-secret visit to assess how the work has progressed, The Denver Post reported. On Monday, they visited Eagle County, one of 13 districts participating in the Integration Project, a collaborative effort by the Colorado Legacy Foundation.

COLORADO CITED BY NEW KENTUCKY GROUP. Kentucky is about to officially start a nonprofit education foundation modeled after one in Colorado and aimed at attracting funding for innovative school programs. State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday on Wednesday will deliver paperwork to the secretary of state’s office incorporating the new Fund for Transforming Education.

VIOLATION? In what appears to be a violation of its tax exempt status as an organization governed under section 501(c)3 of the IRS code, New Era Colorado dropped campaign literature advocating the election of specific candidates. The “Voting Guide” provided by New Era Colorado lists Democratic candidates in state and federal elections who have received the “thumbs up” from New Era Colorado.

STADIUM GOLF took on a new meaning for Phil Mickelson, who overshot the big money targets on his 100-yard shot at halftime of Monday night’s Broncos-Chargers game. He still raised $50,000 for First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides new books for needy children. Had he hit one of the concentric rings in the middle of the green in the “KPMG Chip4Charity” promotion, Mickelson could have raised anywhere from $100,000 to $1 million for the charity.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Dog daze at Visit Denver

October 15, 2012

Wazee (the yellow lab mascot of Rockmount Ranch Wear in LoDo) received an invitation addressed to him from Visit Denver because he was a winner of a Mile High Hospitality Award recently. This was his response:

Dear Jayne (Buck),

I get a lot of mail but not that many invitations to breakfast.  (Eating is something I enjoy almost as much as catching balls.) Sure I will attend, thank you very much. Would it be OK if I bring a guest? Steve handles most of my press inquiries, daily walks, appointments, etc.

Oh one question, will the blue bear be there? I want to apologize for barking the last time we met.

I look forward to seeing you on the 14th.

Regards,

Wazee

Think pink, drink pink

During the month of October, breast cancer awareness and the color pink go hand-in-hand. At The Four Seasons Hotel Denver, the cause and the color are being celebrated – on the rocks.

Three drinks are available throughout this month at Edge Restaurant & Bar as part of The Four Seasons Drink Pink! promotion. A portion of sales from each speciality drink will benefit Sense of Security (www.senseofsecurity.org), a Colorado organization that provides financial assistance for patients undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Baby on board

Kathy Lee, the producer and foil on the Lewis and Floorwax show on 103.5 The Fox, announced on the air last week that she is pregnant, expecting her first child.

Lee, 40, said the baby is due in April but she and her husband, Eric White, don’t know the child’s gender yet.

“We are so excited,” she said.

Mr. Bill

Bill Hanzlik, best known as a college basketball star at Notre Dame and later as a player for the Denver Nuggets, will be recognized for his commitment to Colorado’s youth with the Crystal Globe for Distinguished Service Award at the annual Jefferson Foundation Crystal Ball on Saturday.

The Gold Crown Foundation was established by Hanzlik and Colorado leader Ray Baker in 1986 to provide basketball camps and programs for a time when school budget cuts were eliminating athletics.

Gold Crown has grown to offer sports and enrichment activities to more than 20,000 youth year-round.

The Jefferson Foundation’s 27th Crystal Ball fundraiser, Masquerade, will be a mysterious fantasyland party complete with silent auction, dancing and live entertainment, games and activities, hors d’oeuvres and a champagne toast to honor Hanzlik.

The event takes place from 6:13 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. Tickets are $125 each or $200 per couple available by calling Pam Heiny at 303-982-2210. All proceeds benefit The Jefferson Foundation.

Wining ways

It’s wine time at Charcoal Restaurant, 43 W. Ninth, during the VinBoutique Burgundy Wine Dinner on Sunday.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Denver’s the toast of Trader Joe’s in Colorado

October 12, 2012

Is Boulder crying in its beer? While the burg may have thought it would get the only Trader Joe’s in Colorado with a liquor license, Denver snagged that shot.

When both stores open next year, Denver customers will be able to buy liquor and check out in an attached area of the store. The grocery and liquor sections will share a common entrance, but liquor sales must be completed separately.

How did Denver grab the liquor biz from Boulder?

“We’re a better and bigger market so they can sell more (liquor) here,” said a source close to the deal. “Our process (to obtain a liquor license) is faster and cleaner, and Boulder blabbed about getting a liquor store. Denver kept its mouth shut.”

The initial hearing – the first step in the liquor license process – will be 9 a.m. Oct. 26. The store will have to jump through a few city-required hoops before getting the final sign-off.

Both Boulder and Denver Trader Joe’s stores are expected to open around the same time next year.

Tops and Temps

I Can’t Help Myself but I’m on Cloud Nine because The Four Tops and The Temptations will provide the entertainment for Saturday Night Alive, the signature fundraiser for The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, on March 2. Ticket are now on sale at www.denvercenter.org/sna.

Jamie Angelich and Mimi Roberson will chair this year’s event, that includes one of chi-chi-est silent auctions, surprise box sale, dinner, desserts and dancing in the Seawell Ballroom.

Individual tickets start at $375 and corporate tables of 10 start at $6,000.

In the pink

During the month of October, breast cancer awareness and the color pink go hand-in-hand. At The Four Seasons Hotel Denver, the cause and the color are being celebrated – on the rocks.

Three drinks are available throughout this month at Edge Restaurant & Bar as part of The Four Seasons Drink Pink! promotion. A portion of sales from each speciality drink will benefit Sense of Security (www.senseofsecurity.org), a Colorado organization that provides financial assistance for patients undergoing breast cancer treatment.

First Lady lunches

The First Lady of Mozambique, Dr. Maria da Luz Dai Guebuza, will be in Denver today for Project CURE’s eighth annual First Ladies’ Luncheon fundraising event at the Hyatt Regency Colorado Convention Center.

Guebuza is the honored guest and keynote speaker for the event whose goal is to raise enough funding to deliver $2 million of medical supplies and equipment to clinics and hospitals throughout Mozambique. The country was selected because of its critical need for medical relief. Nearly 40 percent of the population lives on less than a dollar a day.

Combined, Project CURE’s First Ladies’ Luncheons have raised enough funding to deliver $12.6 million of medical relief to hospitals and clinics throughout El Salvador, Belize, Mexico, Ghana, Panama and Tanzania.

Bountiful harvest

Harvest Week, a series of pop-up dinner parties paying homage to Colorado’ produce and producers, features 36 of EatDenver’s independent restaurants, which will host the dinners at Grow Haus, 4751 York St., from Sunday through Oct. 19.

One brunch and five dinners – featuring different chefs and interactive themes – will be paired with hand-crafted cocktails, local brews and wines.

Guests will need to bring their own place setting (plate, cutlery and wine glass). Brunch begins at noon and dinners begin at 6 p.m. Proceeds from the events go to support EatDenver, a marketing group of independently owned restaurants, and Grow Haus, a nonprofit indoor farm, marketplace and educational center.

Crave rave

Crave Real Burgers, with locations in Colorado Springs and Castle Rock, creeps closer to Denver with its latest location that will open in the Town Center in Highlands Ranch in the former Fat Burger and Epic Grill space.

Crave, which has garnered raves, is from the same group who owns the iconic Old Stone Church restaurant in Castle Rock. The menu features Mile High burgers, old-fashioned shakes and a full bar. Check it out (but not if you’re hungry) at www.craverealburgers.com.

Get happy

Fogo de Chao, 1513 Wynkoop, is offering a happy hour menu for the first time with cocktails and lighter bites of the signature fire-roasted meats prepared by gaucho chefs from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 3 to 7 p.m. Sundays.

Happy hour eats are your choice of Brazilian pork sausage, bacon-wrapped chicken breast or pork parmesan medallions served with crispy polenta and pao de queijo (warm cheese bread) for $8 apiece. Every dish is gluten free.

The happy hour menu also features 11 varieties of Brazil’s national drink, the caipirinha, made with a spirit derived from sugar cane. All happy hour drinks are $6.

For more information, go to www.fogo.com.

The recently opened Kachina Southwestern Grill inside the Westin Westminster has added happy hour and late-night dining options to the menu.

The happy hour menu is available from 2 to 6 p.m. daily; late-night menu is served every night from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Menu items include red chile popcorn ($3), green chile cheese fries ($5) and green chile cheeseburger ($12) made with brisket short-rib chuck, roasted green chiles and smoked cheddar on a brioche bun.

Third time’s a charm

MICI, the family owned Italian restaurant with locations in downtown Denver and Cherry Creek, is opening a third spot Monday in Stapleton at 2373 Central Park Blvd.

Brothers Jeff and Michael Miceli and their sister Kim Miceli-Vela opened their first eatery in 2004 in downtown Denver.

In addition to the opening of the Stapleton restaurant, MICI will also be serving breakfast at its Cherry Creek North restaurant. MICI provides sit-down dining, counter service and delivery. More information: www.miciitalian.com.

Indulge in health

HealthOne’s event Free Healthy Indulgences – A Women’s Symposium, A Day for You will include physician-led seminars, free screenings for blood pressure, BMI, osteoporosis and more, from 9 a.m. to 3 pm. (spa lunch included) Saturday at the JW Marriott in Cherry Creek or on Oct. 20 at the Sheraton Denver Tech Center.

Award-winning national speaker and author Laura Stack will discuss “The Exhaustion Cure…Up Your Energy from Low to Go in 21 Days” during the luncheon.

Penny Parker’s On The Town: Holy Hudson Barrel hot sauce! Selby leaving Vesta

October 10, 2012

Matt Selby, the 15-year kitchen captain at Vesta Dipping Grill and Steuben’s, is leaving the organization he helped elevate to top-eats status.

“It’s time for a new and different challenge,” Selby said in a statement.  “It’s been an incredible 15-year run and I am proud of everything (owners) Josh (Wolkon), Jen and I have accomplished. We have built three successful restaurants together, appeared on four Food Network shows, had multiple visits to the James Beard House and written a cookbook. We have traveled the world and done a ton of philanthropy work together. It is just time for me to take what I have learned and try something on my own. It’s time to leave the nest.”

Wolkon, owner of Vesta, Steuben’s and Ace, delivered the shocking news to the press Tuesday afternoon. For those who have followed Vesta’s growth, Selby was a fixture whose passion helped increase that restaurant’s popularity and stature in the restaurant community.

“We have been blessed to have Matty with us for the past 15 years. In this business such a long run is a rarity,” Wolkon said. “Chef Selby’s mark will forever be left on Vesta, Steuben’s and Ace.”

Brandon Foster, who has been serving as executive chef of Vesta for five years, will continue to run the kitchen. Brandon Biederman will continue in his role of the last six years as executive chef of Steuben’s and most recently Ace.

“Jen and I will be forever grateful for everything Chef Selby has helped us accomplish,” Wolkon said. “We have grown up together, shared marriages, births, travels, and memorable food and restaurant related experiences.”

RockBar’s dancing done

What would Kevin Bacon do?

Jesse Morreale, owner of RockBar, the 1970s-era dive bar at 3015 E. Colfax, has lost his bid to renew his cabaret and liquor licenses for the premises, which were found in violation of the provisions of the permits.

In the final order issued by Denver’s Department of Excise and Licenses on Sept. 26, and released Monday, Tom Downey, director of Excise and Licenses, allowed Rockbar a temporary permit to serve liquor until Nov. 7.

But the cabaret license extension was denied effective immediately, so leave your dancing shoes home if you visit RockBar because the jumpin’ joint must cease to allow dancing.

The decision to deny renewal of the licenses came after representatives of neighborhood associations voiced objections to what they deemed as RockBar’s negative impact on the neighborhoods, along with police reports citing various criminal activities, all of which Morreale vehemently opposes.

“It is astounding to me that we are right here and now living in a real live episode of Footloose,” Morreale said, referring to the 1984 Kevin Bacon movie about a small town that banned rock music and dancing. “Where is Kevin Bacon? I need him here.”

But the future of RockBar’s liquor license is only part two in the saga of Morreale’s citations in the city. Morreale’s mishaps with Mayor Michael Hancock’s crew started in July when the city suddenly shut down restaurants El Diablo and Sketch in the 1906 First and Broadway building Morreale owns.

The city alleged that the building, among other things, was a public safety hazard, and shuttered the space for two weeks. Since then, Morreale and his team have been working with the city to bring the building into compliance.

“The city loves to put a gun to your head,” he said. “The first deadline was Oct. 1, the city extended that because they had not responded in a timely way to what we had submitted to them. Oddly enough the new deadline is Halloween. The only better day they could have picked is April Fool’s Day.”

In the RockBar matter, Morreale is considering appealing the order, and if the judge grants a temporary stay, Rockbar could keep serving liquor for a year or longer.

“The most important message is that RockBar is open for business,” Morreale sad. “That’s really important.”
