Penny Parker On The Town: Cherry Hills GM Hood lauded for heroism with golf writers’ award

Cherry Hills Country Club General Manager Kevin Hood recently received the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association’s Mary Bea Porter Award.

The honor was bestowed at the MGWA’s 62nd national awards dinner Tuesday in Tarrytown, N.Y. Hood was honored for saving the life of Cherry Hills member John Moore. Responding to a “code blue” call on Jan. 29, Hood administered CPR to the 87-year-old Moore, who had fallen and hit his head causing his tongue to block his airway.

Hood performed chest compressions and other life-saving measures. After a 10-day hospital stay, Moore recovered and returned to Cherry Hills to enjoy his club membership.

Colorado Avid Golfer magazine first reported the news and you can read more at www.coloradoavidgolfer.com/cherry-hills-kevin-hood-honored.

The award is named for Mary Bea Porter, a former LPGA Tour pro who left the course in the middle of a qualifying round of the 1988 Samaritan Turquoise Classic in Phoenix to save a drowning 3-year-old boy at a home adjacent to a fairway.

Other honorees at this year’s dinner included tour pro Paul Azinger, receiving the MGWA’s Gold Tee Award; Metropolitan PGA executive director Charles Robson; the PGA Tour Wives Association; the Honda Classic; veteran sportscaster Ed Ingles and Old Oaks Country Club in Purchase, N.Y.

Hood, 52, is in his eighth year at Cherry Hills and was a starting linebacker at the University of Colorado and former pro football player with the Denver Gold of the USFL.

Sips, snacks and Summer Music Series

Elway’s Cherry Creek got its ninth annual Summer Music Series off to a rockin’ start Wednesday with The Police tribute band Message in a Bottle.

The restaurant’s covered patio was packed, but the outside courtyard was even more sardine-like with all the pretty people mingling, munching and sipping signature cocktails such as Grey Goose Cougar Juice (Grey Goose Le Citron and Odwalla Pom-Limeade).

There really is no better spot for people watching with the possibility of a hook-up by the end of the evening (the band plays from 6:30 till 9 p.m.).

Next up on Wednesday is the wildly popular band the Railbenders, who set records in food and beverage sales whenever they perform. To see the entire series line-up go to www.elways.com.

Speaking of adult beverages

Peak 7 Vodka made a splash recently into the Colorado micro-spirits market. The seven-times distilled Peak 7, made at Mile High Distillery, comes onto the scene on the heels of a medal-winning performance at the 2013 Denver International Spirits Contest March 2 and 3.

Twelve prominent spirits professionals judged the double-blind tasting, and Peak 7 Vodka was awarded a bronze for best vodka.

“We are Colorado people who want to make a vodka that reflects the culture and vibrancy of Denver and the Rocky Mountains,” said Peak 7 co-founder Dave Collier. “We think Colorado’s the best place on Earth you can live, and the best place on Earth to make great vodka.”

Peak 7 Vodka is currently available at Mondo Vino in Highland, and three Fort Collins eateries: The Austin’s American Grill restaurants, The Moot House and Enzio’s Italian Kitchen.

“All things being equal, there are a lot of people who would rather buy locally made spirits,” Peak 7 co-founder Desi Lopez said. “We’re delivering that high-end quality that people have come to expect from some of the major European brands, but we’re doing it with vodka made right here in our home city.”

For more about Peak 7 Vodka, go to www.peak7vodka.com.

Penny Parker On The Town: Denver Film Society isn’t bowled over by fundraising goal

June 19, 2013

The Denver Film Society wants to step over the line.

No, they don’t want to start showing Triple X movies, rather “the line” represents the $150,000 fundraising goal to buy four new digital film projectors, as required by law, for the DFS’ Sie FilmCenter, The Ellie Caulkins (home of the Starz Denver Film Festival) and Red Rocks for the Film on the Rocks summer series. The total amount needed is $300,000 for the projectors for the Sie Film Center and Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

To spur cash donations, DFS honcho Britta “The Jesus” Erickson stars in a three-minute promotional video spoofing the John Turturro role in the 1998 cult film “The Big Lebowski” with supporting actors stand-up comedian Chuck Roy and Will Morris, a manager at the Sie FilmCenter.

Erickson, complete with bowling shoes and a hairnet, licks the red bowling ball and bowls what looks like a guaranteed gutter ball, but the scene is cut before the ball reaches its destination. Meanwhile Roy and Morris drink beer, look on and hurl comments such as “you crossed the line!” That’s the whole idea.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the DFS donation website – http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1728212872/secure-the-future-of-the-denver-film-society?ref=live – had logged 756 backers and had raised $74,752 with 10 days to go.

If you donate a minimum of $25 and the DFS reaches its $150,000 goal, backers will be treated to a special screening of “The Big Lebowski” on July 31 at Red Rocks.

SOMM at Sie

Samuel Goldwyn Films and Denver Food and Wine are jointly hosting the Denver premiere of “SOMM,” a look inside the world of wine that most people know nothing about, beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sie FilmCenter at Colfax and Elizabeth across from East High School.

The evening benefits The Denver Post Foundation, Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Colorado Restaurant Association Education Foundation.

The film takes viewers on a humorous, emotional and illuminating look into the world of the Court of Master Sommeliers and the massively intimidating master sommelier exam. On June 28, “SOMM” will begin its theatrical run at the Sie FilmCenter.

The reception will feature fine fare from local restaurants as well as wine pairings selected by Jay Fletcher, master sommelier and executive director of fine wine for Southern Wine & Spirits of Colorado.

Additional master sommeliers including Damon Ornowski of Vin Divino and Sabato Sagaria of The Little Nell (and one of the sommeliers featured in the film) will be on hand mingling with the crowd and answering questions.

The film will be shown at 7 p.m. followed by a Q & A session with Fletcher, Ornowski and Sagaria. For tickets, go to www.denverfilm.org/filmcenter/detail.aspx?id=25660.

Dave Chappelle, Flight of the Conchords, Demetri Martin, Kristen Schaal, Hannibal Buress and others to headline FunnyorDie.com’s Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival tour stop on Sept. 13 at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village. The Colorado stop is one of 13 dates on the five-week comedy tour that starts Aug. 23 in Austin.

FunnyorDie.com was launched in 2007 by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. It quickly became a hit thanks to the video, “The Landlord,” which starred McKay’s 2-year-old daughter, Pearl, who plays a cursing landlord trying to get rent money from Ferrell’s character.

“We always love to push the comedy boundaries at Funny or Die and this festival will do just that,” said Dick Glover, CEO of Funny or Die. “It’s the perfect blend of comedy and crazy that will for sure resonate with comedy fans looking for a one of a kind experience.”

Doors to the show open at 5 p.m. Tickets are on sale starting at 10 a.m. Friday at www.livenation.com or www.funnyordie.com/oddball. A video announcing the tour is live on Funny or Die at www.funnyordie.com/oddball. For VIP box seats call 303-837-1024.

Local laughs

Local jokester and Comedy Works regular Phil Palisoul snagged first place at the 2013 Great American Comedy Festival last week in Norfolk, Neb.

Palisoul, a Denver native, beat out eight other professional comedians in the finals to take home the top trophy. The Great American Comedy Festival is a four-day event honoring Norfolk native, Johnny Carson, the greatest talk-show host ever. The event features some of the best amateur and professional comedians from across the country.

Ironically, Palisoul tried to get on the “Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” early in the Denver comedian’s career.

“And when I wasn’t able to get on the  show, I was really disappointed. So, to be able to come here and do this well in  a festival for his name and honor is … it’s overwhelming really,” Palisoul told comedy.broadwayworld.com. Palisoul’s prize was $1,000. Read more about Palisoul’s victory at http://bit.ly/140oIjP.

Winners were picked by a panel of comedy club managers  who judged the comedians on material, audience reaction and poise.

You can catch the Denver winner’s act at 7:30 p.m. July 9 during Comedy Night @ West Woods at West Woods Bar & Grill, 6655 Quaker St. Arvada. Tickets are available at www.Eventbrite.com  KEYWORD: West Woods. Tickets are $12 and there is a two-drink minimum for those who do not have dinner at the restaurant before the show.

The show is hosted by nationally touring comic Bob Meddles and is produced by Slap Happy Entertainment.

Phil Paulisoul

Denver comedian Phil Palisoul recently won first place at the Great American Comedy Festival. The Norfolk, Neb., festival is a four-day event honoring native, Johnny Carson. Palisoul will perform July 9 during Comedy Night @ West Woods at the Arvada golf course lounge.

Hi-ho Silver! Away!

Three Lone Ranger outfits from the late Clayton Moore’s collection are the highlights of Brian Lebel’s 24th Annual Old West Auction at 5 p.m. Saturday – the same day as the Hollywood premiere of Disney’s 2013 version of “The Lone Ranger” starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer – at the Denver Mart (formerly the Denver Merchandise Mart).

Moore, who died in 1999, starred as the original “Lone Ranger” in 169 episodes of the TV series from 1949 till 1951 and again from 1954 to 1957.

Moore’s “Lone Ranger” Stetson, three pairs of boots and his famous Bohlin double-holster gun rig with “silver” bullets will also be part of the sale, along with signed “Lone Ranger” comics books, awards and other personal items.

The auction is held in conjunction with Brian Lebel’s Old West Show, a three-day expo-style dealer show that also specializes in Western antiques and arts.

The seen

Euclid Hall, the James Beard Award-winning chef Jennifer Jasinski-owned eatery on 14th and Larimer was crawling with celebs last weekend. On Saturday, crooner John Legend dined with fiancée, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen, and on Sunday New Orleans-based celebrity chef John Besh sampled the jazzy pub fare.

Penny Parker On The Town: Feel the beat in the heat with many metro area concert series

June 17, 2013

The metro area is alive with the sound of music.

I already told you about the much-anticipated launch of ninth annual Summer Music Series at Elway’s Cherry Creek, which kicks off Wednesday with Message in a Bottle, a Police tribute band. (Full schedule at www.elways.com.)

But wait, there’s more.

Coohills, the French-inspired restaurant at 1400 Wewatta, starts its weekly Beats on the Creek series from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 16 with Under a Blood Red Sky – The U2 Tribute.

Note that local vocalist and Denver fan fave The Hazel Miller Band performs on July 30. Coohills has an expanded patio that leads to the bridge over the creek. More at http://coohills.com/reservations/special-events.

Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, at 16th and Curtis Streets, started its annual Music at the Bottom on June 14, and will continue the series (which starts at 7 p.m.) featuring music from local bands playing everything from disco to classic rock to Motown.

The outdoor music festival will span the city block from Curtis Street to Arapahoe Street along the 16th Street Mall.  The Rock Bottom patio will open at 6 p.m. and bands will take the stage at 7 p.m.  There is no cover charge and Rock Bottom offers a full bar and patio menu.

“We are excited to be celebrating 21 years of music in downtown Denver,” said Shane Rushmann, Rock Bottom General Manager.  “It’s a summer tradition not to be missed!”

Note: Soul School, one of my favorite cover bands, performs at Rock Bottom on July 26.

For more information, contact the restaurant at 303-534-7616 or Dawne Hostetter, marketing manager, at 303-478-9671 or email dhostetter@rockbottom.com.

If you’re not a downtowner, there are some concert series out of the city center. I told you before about Oakwood Homes’ annual free Summer Concert Series, but it bears repeating.

The concerts take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning on July 4 when the music will begin post fireworks. The kickoff features Chase ‘N The Dream at the Green Valley Ranch Amphitheater, 4890 Argonne Way. Full schedule at www.skylineusa.com/oakwood_concert_series.asp.

Brighton Pavilions’ Summer Concert Series started last week, but continues on Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. through Aug. 1. Thursday’s concert features Counterfeit Music Company, a variety dance show.

Activities include face painting and jumpy castles, plus $1 scoops at Cold Stone Creamery. Address is 245 Pavilions Place, just off Main Street. More information: 303-355-3838.

More music to our ears

The 16th Street Mall will be the venue for Make Music Denver, a daylong celebration of local live music from 8 a.m. till 8 p.m. Friday, produced by the Downtown Denver Partnership.

Denver will be one of 520 cities celebrating a festival that models France’s Fete de la Musique, a national musical holiday inaugurated in 1982 to celebrate World Music Day.

On Friday, downtown Denver sidewalks, parks, street corners, restaurants and other businesses will become the stage for free live performances.

The festival highlights Denver’s musical community on the international stage and shows appreciation for our local talented musicians. You’re invited to bring your instrument, colleagues, family and friends. For more information, go to www.makemusicdenver.com.

Tony P’s Cherry Creek shuts its doors

After much consternation, Tony Pasquini, owner of the Tony P’s restaurants, closed his Cherry Creek location at 240 Milwaukee St. on Sunday. He will reopen the store during the Cherry Creek Arts Festival July 5-7, then close for good.

“I’ve spent my whole life building the Pasquini brand,” Tony said. “And when we operated a restaurant in Cherry Creek under my name, we were doing fine. After we changed the name of our restaurant to Tony P’s in Cherry Creek, our customers couldn’t find us and the economics simply don’t support that location any more.

“We are so thankful for our loyal customers and look forward to seeing them all at our beautiful new location at 17th and Clarkson.”

All of the Cherry Creek employees have jobs at the remaining Tony P’s locations.

Tony was forced to drop the Pasquini’s Pizza name after his sister, Melinda, owner of the original Pasquini’s on Broadway, won a lawsuit against her brother claiming that she was the rightful owner of the brand.

Since, Tony has spent countless dollars on changing signage and collateral material, not to mention attorneys fees. He still has an outstanding lawsuit against her law firm Faegre Baker Daniels for malpractice because of a dispute between the siblings over franchise rights, and the fact that Melinda’s law firm wrote the original franchise agreement.

Meanwhile, Tony and his mom, Judy, will continue to own and operate the 17th and Clarkson and 32nd and Zuni stores. All Cherry Creek Tony P’s customers still can get delivery from the 17th and Clarkson location. More information at www.tonypspizza.com.

To market, to market

Spice up your Friday by visiting Denver’s new definition of “market.” The Skyline Market is a food experience that offers artisanal products, ready-to-eat food and a farm-fresh experience all in one.

Take a break from the office grind to enjoy a variety of lunch options, or pick up something for dinner and grab a few things for the weekend. Enjoy live music and a drink with friends or co-workers over happy hour or learn more about the food surrounding you from local chefs.

The Market, on Arapahoe between the 16th Street Mall and 15th Street, opened last Friday and continues every Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Aug. 30. For more information, visit http://downtowndenver.com/Life/WhattoDo/SkylineMarket/tabid/617/Default.aspx.

Good eats on wheels

Looking for an alternative to a fast-food lunch? The sixth annual Civic Center EATS Outdoor Café launched earlier this month, and will continue to take place with an army of food trucks gathering in Civic Center Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays through September.

Enjoy delicious food, fresh air, gorgeous views, live music and a great cause. In addition to supporting Denver’s growing gourmet food truck scene, proceeds will benefit the Civic Center Conservancy, the nonprofit dedicated to restoring, enhancing and activating Denver’s historic Civic Center Park.

Shaded tables and an ATM are available.  For more information, go to http://www.civiccenterconservancy.org/event-civic-center-eats-outdoor-cafe_31.html.

Penny Parker On The Town: Downtown Denver’s in a New York state of mind

June 14, 2013

Did the Paramount Theatre, downtown Denver’s historical performance center, change its name to Paramount New York? It did for one day.

On Wednesday, Hollywood moved east to the Mile High City to shoot the feature film “Dear Eleanor,” starring Jessica Alba, Luke Wilson, Paul Johansson, Ione Skye, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Isabelle Fuhrman.

The production caused quite a stir among downtown workers and passersby who spotted the new name on the marquee as well as all the vintage automobiles parked along Glenarm Place.

The storyline follows two best friends who travel cross country in the 1960s to meet Eleanor Roosevelt, their childhood hero.

Other Denver venues playing cameo roles in the movie are LoDo and the Mayan Theater.  One local notable who landed a part in the film is Rekha Ohal, the exotic and lovely piano player who is a regular at Elway’s Cherry Creek.

Ohal posted on her Facebook page: “My gig today: playing the part of a piano player in 1962 for a movie that’s being filmed in Denver. At least I know how to play the piano! The rest I’ll have to figure out as I go along.”

For more details on the Denver-centric movie, go to http://www.onlocationvacations.com/2013/06/12/dear-eleanor-starring-jessica-alba-spotted-filming-in-downtown-denver-co-today/.

Hot time in the old town

Fifteen Denver-area chefs were fired up Wednesday to compete for top slider honors during the fifth annual Hot Rocks Griller Challenge at Elway’s Cherry Creek, a benefit for the Denver Health Foundation.

Roughly 1,000 attendees scarfed down sliders made from between-the-bun ingredients that varied from wild boar (Elise Wiggins, Panzano) to country ham with pickled green tomato (Jennifer Jasinski, Rioja, Bistro Vendome, Euclid Hall) to grilled watermelon (Paul Reilly, Beast + Bottle).

The winners of the slider smack down were determined by popular vote as well as chefs’ choice.

People’s choice:

First – Tyler Wiard and Aniedra Nichols of Elway’s Cherry Creek.

Second – Troy Guard of TAG, TAG Raw Bar and TAG Burger Bar.

Third – Steve Ballas of Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs.

Chefs’ choice:

First – Troy Guard.

Second – Max MacKissock of Squeaky Bean.

Third – Jennifer Jasinski of Rioja, Bistro Vendome and Euclid Hall.

Worth noting: I’ve attended all five Hot Rocks events, and this year the chefs kicked it up a notch on the side dishes that accompanied the sliders.

Stand-outs included Guard’s five grain salad, Robert Bogart‘s (Elway’s Downtown) potato and black bean salad (I heard one slider slurper say, “I wish I could buy that stuff!”), Reilly’s braised collard greens and Jasinski’s mixed melon salad.

Proud grandpapa

For music man Chuck Morris, the birth of his first grandchild was better than booking Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and The Who on the same bill. Here’s what he told me in an e-mail that fairly vibrated with excitement:

“My grandson and first grandchild, Lincoln James Saunders, arrived June 3rd at 9:52 pm, just so happened to also be my 23rd wedding anniversary.  Lincoln showed up about three weeks early and was just a little over 4 pounds.  He spent a week at St. Joe’s. and received excellent care by (the) hospital.  Mom Brittany (Morris Saunders), VP at the Downtown Denver Partnership, and her attorney husband Tim (Saunders) were able to bring him home on Monday.  They are doing really well and we couldn’t be more in love with the little man.  You can tell he is a Morris. He came out screaming. Perfect for the music business.”

Congrats, grandpa!

Drunken drawings

For a non drinker, artist Michael Godard is obsessed with alcohol. He paints whimsical interpretations of drinks – sometimes personified – in his “Don’t Drink and Draw” series.

The “unserious” artist will make a Denver appearance from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Fascination St. Fine Art, 2727 E. Third Ave. The public is invited but asked to RSVP by calling 303-333-1566.

“I am not a drinker, (some people call me a cheap date) as after one drink, I’m under the table looking up at the gum stuck there!” Godard says in his biography. “But I love the fun of drinking, and all of the little things that go in and around the drinks. Martinis are a special favorite of mine to paint, as there are thousands of different ways that people take a drink that is basically pure alcohol!”

And just for kicks, gallery owner Aaron LaPedis is hosting a martini bar during the event.

Denver’s Tony tie

Gabriel Ebert, a 2005 graduate of Denver School of the Arts,  won the  Tony Award for best featured actor in the musical for his performance as Mr. Wormwood in “Matilda the Musical.” “Matilda” won four Tonys, only eclipsed by the musical, “Kinky Boots,” which took home six Tony Awards.

Ebert won the 2012 Obie Award for “4000 Miles.” The DSA alum performed off-Broadway opposite Tony winner Mary Louise Wilson in Amy Herzog‘s poignant play about the unique friendship between a grandson (Leo) and his widowed grandmother. Ebert is a graduate of Juillard.

Burger battle

Can you down a Juicy Lucy burger in 39 seconds or less? Denver multi-restaurant owner Frank Bonanno and the Vesper Lounge are offering that challenge for anyone who can gulp down the 17-ounce double-patty burger (complete with lettuce, four tomatoes and white onions). Six Bonanno chefs were given the challenge and Mizuna sauté chef Adam Devers set the bar at 39 seconds.

The challenge began Wednesday at the Vesper Lounge, 233 E. Seventh Ave. If you win the challenge, the burger is free and you’ll also get a Vesper Lounge T-shirt and a shot of your liquor choice. If you fail, it’s $14 for the burger.

The Bonanno boys videotaped the gut-busting gorge and posted it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuuHVxKSFqs.

Penny Parker On The Town: ‘Triple D’ drives into Denver dining

June 12, 2013

Food Network star Guy Fieri again brought his “Diners Drive-ins and Dives” show on the road to Denver, but this time he popped up at places that are neither diners, drive-ins or dives.

Fieri’s Denver food tour included Prohibition, Denver Biscuit Company, Highland Tap and Burger and Hops & Pie.

Prohibition owner Jimmy Callahan said he describes the fare at his Capitol Hill spot as “a bar with exceptional food.”

“The food he focused on (for the show) was the braised, short-rib burger and grilled apple streusel with Left Hand (Brewing Company) Milk Stout ice cream,” said Callahan, who added that the affable host was “great” to work with. “He loves to joke around with the crew.  He is very quick at off-the-cuff commentary. He also made my portion of the interview very easy by telling jokes and asking questions back to back. Before I knew it, they said, ‘You’re done!'”

Prohibition, on East Colfax and Pennsylvania, will host a viewing party for the feature spotlight on the Food Network television series, beginning at 8 p.m. June 17. Callahan will be serving drink specials and offering giveaways such as a Red Bull customized longboard displaying the Prohibition logo, T-shirts, hats and more.

Since the doors opened in May 2011, Prohibition has delivered fresh food whipped up by executive chef Toby Prout. The attention the place has garnered from press and fans was enough for Food Network scouts and producers to bring in Fieri for a behind-the-scenes taste and then filming in January.

The spiky-haired, bleach blond, flip-flop and shorts wearing host of “Triple D” cruises all over the country in search of great eats for his show. The popular television series visited the Denver eateries in January and Prohibition was one of the spots making the cut. The episode will air at 8 p.m. our time on June 17 on the Food Network.

Pork holds court

Beggin’ for bacon?

Back for its third year, the Blue Ribbon Bacon Tour comes sizzling back to Keystone from 1 to 6 p.m. June 22 and 23.

Bacon lovers can pork out on pounds of bacon and bacon-inspired cuisine accompanied by free live music from Hamilton Loomis, the Steeldrivers and Hell’s Belles.

Wash down the royal piggy with Bacon Bloody Marys or cucumber vodka ice tea. To quote the BRBT organizers, “Much like the Crusaders revolutionized the lives of Europeans by introducing a large variety of spices from the East. The Blue Ribbon Bacon Tour travels to places like Colorado to transform the lives of bacon lovers by introducing a variety of bacons and bacon-inspired dishes from around the world. Of course, we like to do all this while tossing back a few cold beers!.

Lowdown on LoHi

The LoHi Merchant Group has launched the website www.lohimerchants.com as the “go-to” place for visitors seeking information about the Lower Highland neighborhood, merchants, special deals and upcoming events.

With the rapid growth of LoHi, The LoHi Merchant Group founders Lu Stasko, owner of The Stasko Agency and local realtor Paul Tamburello, realized that merchants moving into the neighborhood saw an opportunity to bring merchants together to create a platform for networking and to work together as one voice.

LoHi’s boundaries are Federal to the west, I-25 to the east, 38th Avenue to the north and Speer Boulevard to the south.

“This has truly become a community that you can experience on foot or by bike day or night,” Stasko said.

“Can you ever have everything done around a house?  I don’t think it’s possible so don’t fret it.”

“So true about the house – it’s like painting the Golden Gate Bridge – never gets done!”

Penny Parker On The Town: Pink wine party puts the pop in summer at Elway’s Cherry Creek

June 3, 2013

Think pink.

Elway’s Cherry Creek threw a Pink Patio Party recently where (and I’m not kidding here) attendees tasted more than 50 Rose wines – both still and sparkling – and voted on which wine winners would make it onto the restaurant’s summer wine list.

This event has grown from a few wines – maybe six – the first year to this massive event where more than 100 folks paid $35 to sip and snack on appetizers created by chef Aniedra Nichols, which included to die for foie gras on toastettes, oysters on the half shell with pico de gallo salsa and scallop ceviche.

After all the ballots were counted (with no reports of hanging chads), Elway’s sommelier Adam Vance announced the winners:

* 2012 Remy Pannier Rosé d’Anjou, Loire Valley;

* 2012 Merryvale Starmont Rosé, California;

* 2012 Saint Roch Cotes du Provence Rosé.

Each wine will be available as a flight (2 ounces of each), by the glass as well as by the bottle. The Rose menu debuts on Tuesday.

Fit club

I told you last week that Denver ranked fifth of the most fit cities in the U.S., according to annual American Fitness Index, a study done by the American College of Sports Medicine.

In keeping with that ranking, PowerBandFit class, the popular fitness studio in Cherry Creek North, has added two new classes to its lineup: PowerBandYoga and PowerBandCore, which join the original PowerBandFit class.

The award-winning studio’s classes make working out more efficient by taking half the time. Owner and trainer Howard Waldstreicher is an entertainer who takes your mind off the fact that you’re actually putting your body through a series of cardio and strengthening moves.

New clients can take the first class for free by going to www.halfhourpower.com or by calling 720-985-8892.

If you’d prefer fitness more urban style, Altitude Peak Fitness in the Ballpark neighborhood turns four this month. The high-intensity gym, owned by Danica Ansardy, is celebrating its b-day with an incentive to entice folks to get their bodies ready for summer.

The “4-for-4 Challenge” offers new clients four weeks of classes for $150. If attendance is perfect, the following four weeks of classes drops to $75. To sign up for the offer, go to www.altitudepeakfitness.com or call 720-771-2079.

Freedom first

U.S. Representative Mike Coffman an e-mail blast to his followers to promote The Colorado Freedom Memorial.

The Colorado Freedom Memorial is the first of its kind that recognizes those killed in action since Colorado became a state and is a testament to our state’s respect for our military.  It is located in Aurora just across from the main entrance at Buckley Air Force Base.

Coffman wrote: “It took Rick and Diane Crandall 13 years to make their dream of creating a memorial honoring Coloradans who served our nation during time of war and who made the ‘ultimate sacrifice.’  There are over 6,000 names etched into the glass panels of the memorial. When you visit the Colorado Freedom Memorial, it’s important that you also remember not only those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but the families who shared in that sacrifice.
Since I’ve been a member of Congress, I’ve visited every family from my district who has lost a loved one serving in the military and whose names are now engraved into the memorial’s panels.
No two families, that I’ve privately met with, are alike in the way that they grieve.  No two families are alike in the way that they move forward after their loss.  But all of the families that I have met with are united in honoring the sacrifices of their family member who was lost.
This memorial will serve as a reminder that we will remain a free people so long as there are Americans who are willing to step forward and to serve our nation in uniform.”

The website also cited details from the Memorial Day weekend dedication:

“Nearly 13 years of fundraising and planning became a reality Memorial Day weekend when the Colorado Freedom Memorial was dedicated. The memorial stands 10 feet high and is 120 feet long. Glass panels are engraved with the names of nearly 6,000 Colorado men and women who have died in wars dating back to the Spanish-American War in 1898.”

Crandall, KEZW’s “Breakfast Club” host, began work on the memorial more than a decade ago while on assignment in Omaha Beach. According to the website, Crandall joked his wife and those working around him now cringe when he says “Hey, I’ve got an idea.”

The 101st Army Band, Face Vocal Band and Mollie Weaver performed at a concert to honor Gold Star families on Saturday, May 25 on The Great Lawn at the Aurora Municipal Building. The following day, the dedication was given with speeches by dignitaries, including Coffman, Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan  and Adjutant General Michael Edwards. Medal of Honor recipient George “Joe” Sakato was on hand and helped lay a wreath at the foot of the memorial in honor of WWII veterans.
The memorial includes names of the following Coloradans:
  • 46 killed in action during the Spanish-American War, 1898;
  • 1,001 killed in action in World War I, 1914-1918;
  • 3,500+ killed in action in World War II, 1941-1945;
  • 298 killed in action in Korean War, 1951-1953;
  • 623 killed in action in Vietnam, 1961-1972;
  • 2 killed in action in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, 1991;
  • 93+ killed in action in Operation Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom, 2001–
  • 97 POW/MIAs still missing
The memorial can be visited at 756 N. Telluride Street near Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora. Visit www.cfmf.net for details.
