Laugh line: Today’s eavesdropping

October 6, 2014

Eavesdropping on a woman talking about a conversation with her boyfriend about her manicure before a backpacking/camping trip: “Steve always makes funny comments about the nail polish color since OPI has interesting names like Monsooner or Later, Dutch Tulips, Coca-Cola Red, etc. When I got home with newly painted red toenails he said, ‘Is that Alpine Rescue Red?'”

I take October personally

October 3, 2014

October reminds those of us who are breast cancer survivors how lucky we are for having lived through the journey.

Ours is a sorority we never wanted to join. But we did unwillingly and lived to tell it. For me, a multi-year survivor (it’s funny that I no longer remember how many years), October is also a month to support breast cancer patients who are on the path to survival through donating to a charity, or simply buying a Panera bagel or a pink drink at a Richard Sandoval restaurant (see items below).

Breast cancer will rear its ugly head in one out of every seven women. When I was first diagnosed, it was one in eight. My wish in October, and the rest of the year, is for a cure in my lifetime that will annihiliate this insidious disease.

Lucky Strikes aims to bowl over breast cancer with speciality food and drink

October 3, 2014

Lucky Strikethe bowling and entertainment brand, is joining the fight against breast cancer with a fundraising and awareness initiative in partnership with www.breastcancer.org, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to providing reliable, complete and up-to-date information about breast cancer, so that those who are affected can make the best decisions for their lives.

As part of this initiative, all Lucky Strike locations (in the Pavilions in Denver and at Belmar in Lakewood) will raise awareness and funds through the sales of food and specialty beverage items and a limited-edition charity bracelet throughout October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Breastcancer.org is truly grateful for the loyal support we have received over the years from Lucky Strike,” said Rita Lusen, vice president of corporate partnerships and development at Breastcancer.org. “These contributions help to fund critical programs that reach people affected by breast cancer in a meaningful, necessary, and respectful way. We are so thrilled to kick off our new partnership this October.”

Guests nationwide can also show their support in a variety of ways, including the purchase of limited-edition charity bracelets available at Lucky Strike and by purchasing the Asian chicken salad and spinach and artichoke dip, as well as the Lucky Strike Club and Ribbon-Tini, made with Belvedere Vodka, raspberry liquor, pineapple juice, fresh grapefruit and lemon juice.  A portion of proceeds from the sale of these items, along with the bracelets, will benefit the charity.  Additional donations can also be made via Lucky Strike guest receipts.

“Breast cancer is unfortunately something that is very widespread and continues to affect so many people and their loved ones,” said Steven Foster, founder and CEO of Lucky Strike.  “Lucky Strike is proud to partner with Breastcancer.org to raise funds and awareness for this important initiative, and we are happy to be able to show our support for the life-saving work of such a great organization.”

Chicken Tuesdays back at Lou’s

October 3, 2014

I cornered Denver restaurant mogul Frank Bonanno at one of his booths during Denver Food and Wine recently, and begged, pleaded and cajoled him into bringing back chicken Tuesdays at Lou’s Food Bar, 1851 W. 38th Ave.

And although I can’t take total credit for the return of one of my favorite restaurant deals – a half fried chicken (naked, medium or Nashville hot) with two sides and a draft for $20 per person – I certainly added to the popular demand to bring back that Tuesday tradition.

Lou’s has also extended hours to welcome late-night diners and drinkers, and has expanded the tap selection to 17 drafts. Reservations: www.lousfoodbar.com; walk-ins welcome. Thanks, Frank!
