Tavern Uptown staying put in building marked for redevelopment

July 17, 2015

The building that houses the Tavern Uptown, a popular watering hole at 538 E. 17th Ave., is being redeveloped into a mixed-use project with plans to develop an eight-story building with roughly 315 apartments and 14,000 square feet of retail space, which will include the addition of a rooftop patio for the Tavern on top of the eight-story building.

A joint venture between Southern Land Company of Nashville, and real estate investment firm GTIS Partners LP, headquartered in New York City, has announced plans for the redevelopment of a 1.5-acre site in the Uptown neighborhood.

Tim Downey, CEO of Southern Land Company, said, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to develop much-needed apartment housing in Denver while enabling a popular neighborhood gathering spot to continue to thrive and serve its loyal customers. This location offers the ideal setting to benefit the community, businesses and residents alike.”

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the site’s proximity to downtown jobs and its easy access to Uptown’s amenities and parks” added Ken Howell, CFO of Southern Land Company.

“Over the years, we’ve been approached by various developers who wanted to purchase our property,” says THG Owner/CEO Frank Schultz. “We’ve always declined because we have a history in Uptown and could never imagine leaving the neighborhood. Tavern Uptown was our first location –  the birthplace of Tavern – so it’s pretty sentimental to us. We feel we’re part of the fabric of the community and have grown with the neighborhood. Our regular guests have been coming for years and are family to us.

“Southern Land Company recognized our steadfast stance of keeping Tavern Uptown in our same location. They proposed a plan, which includes Tavern Uptown in the redesign of their new multifamily building. This is a really exciting opportunity for us to keep Tavern Uptown in the community, yet create a bigger and better version.”  The Tavern Uptown will not close for rebuilding until early next year.

Neiman Marcus Denver set to celebrate 25 years

July 17, 2015

This August, Neiman Marcus Denver will celebrate 25 years of service and style in the Denver community in a culminating event “Then. Now. Next.” on Aug. 14.

In an evening cocktail party, NM Denver will nod to the past with a pictorial retrospective, unveil the Fall 2015 trends with a fashion presentation, and introduce Britt Jackson, NM Denver’s new vice president and general manager.

To celebrate NM Denver’s customers from the last 25 years, guests can reminisce by poring over a retrospective wall of nostalgic imagery. The display recounts the fashions of the 1990s, highlights Neiman Marcus advertising, and most importantly, features the faces of NM Denver’s customers with candid photographs from the 1990 opening gala.

Preview the Fall 2015 must-have trends with a fashion presentation beginning at 6 p.m. The 2015 Fall NM Trend List hinges on Folklorica, a seamless segue from last season’s New Bohemian trend. A continuation of fashion’s obsession with the 1970s, Folklorica describes a global array of embroidery, patchwork, lace and fringe. The return of the flare, the saddle bag, and chunky heels all come together to complete the folkloric fall look. Join us for the show to receive the complete must-have list for men and women.

Baur’s celebrates historic significance with free ice cream

July 15, 2015

You won’t have to scream for ice cream at Baur’s Restaurant and Listening Lounge Friday and Saturday. The downtown eatery will celebrate the historic “Baur’s Day” by giving away free homemade mini ice cream cones to the Denver community.

The event also officially marks the restaurant’s foray into the ice cream business with its new line of homemade ice cream, and celebrates the iconic Baur’s building that once housed the Baur Confectionery Company – serving homemade sweets, candy and ice cream – from 1891 into the 1970s.

In 2006, then-Mayor John Hickenlooper, declared Baur’s Day as a historic day in recognition of the building’s significance to downtown Denver. Baur’s Restaurant and Listening Lounge, at 1512 Curtis St., will celebrate the occasion with these “sweet” offers throughout the week:

* Friday – To kick-off Baur’s Day early, Baur’s will give away free mini ice cream cones from 2-4 p.m. at the restaurant.

* Saturday – The Baur’s team will give away free mini ice cream cones to visitors of their booth at the Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.* and at the restaurant from 2-4 p.m.

* Saturday – Guests who dine at the restaurant on Baur’s Day can purchase a signature Baur’s pint glass and T-shirt for a discounted price of  $7.18**. There will also be live music at the restaurant in the evening.

* Today through Saturday – The restaurant will offer its Stout and Ice Cream Float for $7.18 all week in honor of the July 18 holiday.

* Sunday – Guests can enjoy a family style meal with a bluegrass influence including house-made Carolina fried chicken, collard greens, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes and cornbread while enjoying live music from MIPSO, a progressive bluegrass band from North Carolina. Special house-made pie and ice cream will also be available. The restaurant will also offer a special bourbon cocktail for the evening. To purchase tickets to the show visit www.baursmagic.com.

The debut of the restaurant’s new ice cream line includes flavors like goat cheese and cherry, vanilla bean and salted caramel, Earl Grey and grilled peach, chocolate hazelnut with Espelette pepper, death by chocolate and seasonal sorbets including the current flavor strawberry and grapefruit. There will be at least six flavors available, which will change occasionally, with sorbets changing as fruit comes in season. Ice cream can be purchased in half pints for $4 at Baur’s Restaurant and Listening Lounge and at the Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings at the Baur’s booth. The ice cream can also be purchased off the dessert menu in the restaurant.

“From day one, we wanted to find ways to honor the history of the Baur’s building in the restaurant,” said Dory Ford, chef/proprietor of Baur’s Restaurant and Listening Lounge. “That is why we decided to make homemade ice cream in a variety of unique flavors. The Baur Confectionery Company made ice cream in this same spot many decade ago, and it just made sense to bring back a delicious dessert from Baur’s past.”
