New Belgium Brewing bringing brewery to The Source Hotel
New Belgium Brewing is about to let the creative juices flow through a new 10-barrel pilot brewery at The Source Hotel in Denver’s River North District, which is slated to start construction later this summer. New Belgium will brew on the ground floor of the Source Hotel, with barrel aging on the eighth floor in a rooftop lounge dubbed The Woods, a collaboration between New Belgium and The Source Hotel.
The Woods will serve New Belgium beers paired with small plates and will include a snack counter and bar, sit-down dining and beer garden. The eighth floor will also include a pool and roof-top deck with mountain and downtown views.
New Belgium beers originating from the 2,000-square-foot brewery will go to establishments in The Source Hotel and expanded market hall. The 50 oak barrels for on-site aging will help expand New Belgium’s sour beer offerings, which the brewery has been producing since 1998. That’s when brewmaster Peter Bouckaert first introduced aging beer in wood barrels and blending to New Belgium. The brewery’s current cellar in Ft. Collins – also known as the foeder forest – now has 64 French Oak foeders, or barrels, making it one of the most comprehensive wood beer programs in the country.
“After 25 years in Fort Collins, we’re really excited to get more deeply involved in Colorado’s cultural and political capital,” said Jenn Vervier, director of strategy and sustainability at New Belgium. “We’ve long considered creating a Denver location to bring the New Belgium experience to more of our Colorado fans and to the millions of travelers who visit Denver. RiNo is already a vivid scene with a rich art and craft beer culture, and will soon have great access for bikers and walkers. This small batch brewery will allow us to collaborate with The Woods’ chef and mixologists to create innovative beers, drinks, and pairings you can’t get anywhere else. The Source Hotel and the Zeppelin Development team are the perfect fit.”
Zeppelin Development, the Denver-based boutique company behind The Source Hotel and expanded market hall will work with the group behind The St. Julien Hotel in Boulder to operate The Source Hotel. Anticipated opening is the first quarter 2017.

Highland Tap and Burger opening second location at Sloan’s Lake
Tap and Burger at Sloan’s Lake, a sister restaurant to the popular Highland Tap and Burger, will be the first tenant in the seven-block $300-million development of Sloans, a restaurant, retail and residential neighborhood directly south of Sloan’s Lake. The 177-acre project will be the second largest in the Mile High City.
Alexan Sloan’s Lake, occupying blocks five and six of the seven-block Sloans project, is a new 369-unit luxury apartment development by Trammell Crow Residential.
Tap and Burger at Sloan’s Lake is the newest endeavor from Juan Padro and his wife, Katie O’Shea-Padro, owners of LoHi’s award-winning Highland Tap and Burger.
“We’re very excited to have Juan, Katie and their team commit to opening a new location within our Sloan’s Lake project,” says Matt Schildt, managing director of TCR. “The Highland Tap and Burger concept is extremely popular, and Juan is renowned for cultivating – and maintaining – strong community relationships, and we look forward to him bringing that same energy and experience to the Sloan’s Lake community and future residents of our project.”
The 4,600-square-foot Tap and Burger at Sloan’s Lake space, at 1565 Raleigh St., is part of TCR’s 10,000-square-foot ground level retail and restaurant development, which still boasts an additional 4,200 square feet of prominent real estate for tenants looking to maximize their brand identity and exposure in the heart of one of Denver’s urban neighborhoods.
“Being a part of a community is super-important to us, and this project really lends itself to embracing the Sloan’s Lake community,” Padro said. “We were encouraged, as I hope others will be, by the fact that we have a compelling opportunity to contribute to the future growth of such a dynamic neighborhood. It’s a super-active area – you’ve got apartments, homes with backyards, a great walkability factor, the park and the lake – that’s bolstered by a ton of football traffic and thousands of cars that use Colfax to get in and out of downtown.”
Tap and Burger at Sloan’s Lake will feature 230 seats, a raised patio, a centerpiece island bar and a private dining area with capabilities to host business functions and meetings. Padro plans to continue his dedicated focus on Colorado craft beers and spirits, and he’ll offer 36 to 40 draft handles alongside wine and cocktails. And while core menu items at the original location – the Stranahan’s barrel-smoked chicken wings, IPA mac-and-cheese and shroom luva’s burger, for example – are slated to appear on the Sloan’s Lake menu, Padro and his crew will also introduce new dishes, including several burgers that will be at the discretion of his yet-to-be-named chef. Tap and Burger at Sloan’s Lake is scheduled to begin construction in late fall, and Padro plans to open in March of 2016.
“Having Tap and Burger Concepts as a tenant is further proof of the attractiveness of the new community asset that we’re creating with Sloans,” says Cameron Bertron, executive vice president of EFG. “Tap and Burger at Sloan’s Lake is the perfect tenant to support the walkable retail environment that we envision for Raleigh Street, and we expect the restaurant to be a great success.”
In addition to restaurant and retail space, the Alexan Sloan’s Lake project includes high-design studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments, a clubhouse and lounge common space, community kitchen area, conference room, two large outdoor courtyards with a resort-style pool and spa, a fitness and yoga center and more. Construction on the apartments is underway with the first units delivering in October.
Restaurant and retail tenants interested in leasing one of the remaining spaces should contact SullivanHayes broker Sean Kulzer at 970-274-1817.

Vote for Larimer Square for Best Al Fresco Dining Neighborhood
Larimer Square, Denver’s iconic shopping and dining block, is in the running to be crowned USA Today’s Best All Fresco Dining Neighborhood.
USA Today and 10Best teamed up with a panel of traveling foodies to help nominate 20 streets and neighborhoods across the USA for the title of Best Al Fresco Dining Neighborhood. Which area gets your vote? Cast your ballot once per day until voting ends at 10 a.m. our time Aug. 17.
Here’s what the newspaper said about Larimer Square: “The birthplace of Denver, Larimer Square is the oldest and most historic block in the city, and with its original gaslight fixtures, hidden subterranean speakeasy and period charm, all in the heart of downtown, it offers a welcome respite from the chain cookie cutter feel of the nearby 16th Street Mall. The four sides of this single block contain more than 40 shops and restaurants, almost all of which offer outdoor options, and are very varied, from fine dining to fast causal, steaks to seafood, French, Italian, Spanish, and Rocky Mountain staples like barbecue and bison. With more than 300 sunny days annually, the Mile High City is an al fresco dream.”

Elway’s wife hosting ‘Dog by Dog’ screening Thursday
Paige Elway (aka Mrs. John Elway) and 3CW invite you to watch the “Dog by Dog” documentary which will be screening at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Mayan Theater, 110 Broadway.
“Dog by Dog” is a documentary that aims to wake up the American public to the horrible realities of puppy mills by following the money trail across the United States and confronting those that have maintained this corrupt and irresponsible system.
While many documentaries have admirably exposed the public to the sickening underworld of puppy mills, what has been missing from the public discussion is a close examination of the umbrella of monetary support which has sentenced millions of healthy dogs to death and allowed the most irresponsible dog breeders to thrive. Many people try to save these animals one by one, or dog by dog. This documentary aims to point out the problems of the current system in order to move toward a kinder and gentler one.
Tickets are $15 and available at www.dogbydogdocumentary.com/denver-landmark-theater/.
