History Colorado showing award-winning film “1971”

July 31, 2015

History Colorado will host a special screening of the award-winning film “1971” from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. After the film, a discussion will follow covering questions of privacy in an era of government surveillance.

The documentary tells the story of eight ordinary citizens who broke into a Philadelphia-area FBI office, took hundreds of secret files and shared them with the public. In doing so, they uncovered the FBI’s vast and illegal regime of spying and intimidation of Americans exercising their First Amendment rights. Despite searching for the people behind the heist in one of the largest investigations ever conducted, the FBI never solved the mystery of the break-in and their identities remained a secret, until today.

The story is told through a combination of exclusive interviews, rare primary documents from the break-in and investigation and national news coverage of the burglary with dramatic recreations.

After the screening, a discussion panel will explore the controversial issues highlighted within the film, including the right to privacy and the extent of the government’s surveillance from recent history to today. Included on the panel will be special guest Sarah Davidon, daughter of Bill Davidon, an important subject in the film.

To reserve a spot at the showing call 303-866-2394. Admission is $4 for History Colorado members; $5 for nonmembers.

Visionbox Studio puts Kardashian spin on Chekov’s ‘Three Sisters’

July 31, 2015

Fresh on the high heels of Caitlyn Jenner’s spin-off television premiere, “I Am Cait,” Denver’s Visionbox Studio has begun work on an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s popular 1900 play “Three Sisters” – with a 2015 Kardashian twist.

Instead of Chekov’s Olga, Masha, and Irina, the three sisters are Kourtney, Kim and Khloe.  Instead of Moscow, the girls dream of Miami.  And instead of Natasha, Kris Ivanovna takes on the role of the overbearing head of the household.

Helming the adaptation is Jennifer McCray Rincon, Visionbox’s Founding artistic director, who served almost two decades as the head of acting for the National Theatre Conservatory in Denver.  She now leads Visionbox, a non-profit that trains Denver actors of all ages, levels and backgrounds and sometimes develops new work.

“It may sound crazy,” Rincon said, “but the parallels between Chekov’s Prozorov family and the Kardashian family are very striking.  They are both living in times of transition, when the meaning of life is no longer clear and many struggle with the disconnects and unfulfilled longings that are timeless fixtures of the human experience.

“Our contemporary take on the play allows the humor, ridiculousness, and satire that Chekhov originally intended to come to the forefront. Too often performances of Chekhov are slow, boring and just not funny.  That is not what he ever intended.  We are revealing a deeper truth about the play by connecting it with our own ridiculous, insane but human contemporary world. “

Monday’s staged reading is open to the public.  Doors open at 6 pm.  Suggested donation: $10.  Food and drinks will be served.  All proceeds will support classes and programming at Visionbox Studio.

For more information, visit www.visionbox.org or call 303-573-4940.

Mezcal closes temporarily for new chef, new menu and new look

July 31, 2015

Chef Chris Douglas, whose accomplishments are well known in the Denver dining scene from his stints as sous-chef at Vega, to Restaurant Kevin Taylor, Tula, Sweet Basil and his gig at the French Laundry as the head of the “Butcher Program,” has been selected by Mezcal co-owners Chris Swank and Loris Venegas to take the Colfax restaurant into the future.

“This is just such an incredible opportunity,” said Douglas of the newly formed partnership. “I’m excited to be working with Chris and Loris.”

Douglas’ take on the cuisine and what he plans on bringing to Mezcal is to form relationships with farmers and ranchers.

“What I like about Mexican food is the simplicity — to be able to highlight the ingredients, and, I believe Mexican food allows you to do that,” Douglas said. “With that said, it can also be extremely complex to create a rich Mole to a perfectly balanced ceviche, and I look forward to making well-balanced food that is both seasonal and approachable — food that people can understand and love.”

Mezcal, is located at 3230 E. Colfax Ave. and is slated to reopen in late summer.

Williams & Graham named Best American Cocktail Bar

July 29, 2015

Williams & Graham, the false-front bookstore speakeasy in LoHi has been named the Best American Cocktail Bar at the 2015 Spirited Awards.

The award is so prestigious that the news was picked up by the venerable Esquire magazine, which said about W&G, “Here’s everything you need to know about it before booking a flight.”

The story went on to say, “Outside of coastal cities and Chicago, no interior-American bar has ever won the coveted Drinks International award. New York Times cocktail writer Robert Simonson similarly tweeted that (co-owner) Sean Kenyon’s Bartender of the Year win at last year’s Spirited Awards was the biggest thing ever to happen to Denver’s cocktail scene. Last weekend, at a competition in New Orleans, Williams & Graham was named the Best American Cocktail Bar at the 2015 Spirited Awards.

“Along with his business partners, the 46-year-old Kenyon, a veteran bartender from a long line of New Jersey bartenders, will next month open a new venture, The Occidental Room. It’s connected by a short hallway to Williams & Graham, but it’s a different beast entirely, and one that makes concessions to the 21st century in a way that would shatter Williams & Graham’s meticulously crafted fantasy.

“The 1,200-square-foot space, a former Native American art store, will seat just under 100, including on a modest patio with a view of the Denver skyline to the south. Exposed brick and scuffed wood floors frame a subtle counterculture theme with references to art, literature and music (the bathroom doors bear images of Blondie and Iggy Pop; cue jokes about which one the guys should use). Walls of vintage boomboxes and cassettes, along with arcade games, TVs, darts and a bocce court, further accent the casual theme. Power outlets and USB ports are plentiful.

“There’s no small amount of anticipation surrounding a new business from the owners of one of the country’s most lauded bars. Drinks will be cheaper, yes: an average of $8 per cocktail instead of Williams & Graham’s $12. A 12-tap beer system, which Williams & Graham lacks, will ensure that few (if any) orders need to flow to the Occidental Room from its more exclusive relative.

“But Kenyon insists that his many, deeply held philosophies on hospitality will extend to the Occidental.”

Jax Fish House founder bringing GoodBird Kitchen to Stanley Aviation Marketplace

July 29, 2015

GoodBird Kitchen will bring its award-winning fried chicken and fixin’s and Post Brewing Company beer to Stapleton in the spring of 2016. Dave Query, chef/owner of the Big Red F Restaurant Group, has signed a lease on a space in the new Stanley Aviation Marketplace.

GBK will be a smaller, more streamlined version of The Post Brewing Company in Lafayette. It will offer its famous fried and rotisserie bird, local farm fresh sides, homemade pies and award-winning Post beers. Guests will order at a counter prior to being seated and full service will be available from that point forward. Dining rooms will feature the same cozy Colorado Mountain-meets-Michigan Roadhouse feel that has made The Post comfortable for its diners. Prices will start at seven dollars and top out at $14 for platters, and buckets of chicken and big family meals to-go will be available from walk-up to-go windows.

“We are trying to create a simple, easy to use, value driven chicken concept,” Query said. “We like cooking bird the same way we like cooking and working with fresh seafood at Jax. The biscuits, the award winning pies, the field-driven side dishes that we feature by the dozen each night. It’s all good. It’s all GoodBird Kitchen.”

GoodBird Kitchen will feature can and draft beers produced exclusively by Brewmaster/Partner Bryan Selders of The Post. Many limited editions and “only-available-ats” will be featured at GBK.

The food will be in the hands of Chef/Partner Brett Smith. Brett has been working to perfect this bird and all the sides coming out of the wood oven that have made The Post kitchen what it is.

The bar/program will be directed by Post Bar Manager/Partner Brian Selbitchka. Beer, chicken friendly wines and a straightforward classic cocktail menu will be available.

The Stanley Marketplace is a budding urban marketplace on the borders of Stapleton and Aurora. It was once the Stanley Aviation headquarters – where airplane ejector seats were engineered and manufactured – and when it reopens in 2016 it will be a community hub and gathering space with numerous like-minded businesses, a park, a beer hall and more. In addition to GBK, there will be Tootsies the Nail Shoppe, Kismet, wax, Stanley Beer Hall, Endorphin and Kindness Yoga.
