The Biomedical Research Building walls will come tumbling down

August 19, 2015
It’ll blow up real good.
9th Avenue Land, LLC, a joint venture between Continuum Partners and CIM Group, developers of the 9th & Colorado Project, and its construction partner, Saunders Construction, have scheduled an implosion of the Biomedical Research Building located at the corner of Colorado Boulevard and Ninth Avenue for 8 a.m. Aug. 29. Implosion of the building will involve one major closure for four hours followed by normal construction activity for the remainder of site clean-up.
“Standard demolition of this building would take more than four months and require ongoing lane closures and disruption to the surrounding area,” said Continuum Partners Development Director Frank Cannon. “Implosion is the safest way to remove this particular building and is the next step in bringing the Ninth and Colorado redevelopment project from vision to reality.”
Road closures and barricades will begin at 3 a.m. Aug. 29 and extend from Sixth Avenue North to 13th Avenue and from Colorado Boulevard East to Bellaire Street. Streets and walkways will reopen no later than noon. A full map of road closures and detours is available at www.9thandcolorado.com/. The complete schedule of events will be as follows:
● 3 a.m. – road closures begin
● 6 a.m. – protection installed
● 7 a.m. – site lockdown
● 8 a.m. – implosion
● 8:10 a.m. – implosion complete
● 8:15 a.m. – cleanup begins
● Noon – streets and walkways fully reopened
When the implosion is initiated, there will be a quick sequence of small detonations, similar to the sound of fireworks, immediately before the building comes down, which will occur in approximately 30 seconds. There will be a slight vibration in the immediate secured area as the building collapses.  The demolition team will employ extensive dust control measures to contain the majority of the dust within the limits of the site and secured area.
A team of more than 75 people with cleaning equipment will commence cleanup immediately following the implosion to reopen the roads as quickly as possible. The entire process is anticipated to take approximately two to four hours.
The site of the Biomedical Research Building will become part of the overall 9th & Colorado redevelopment, an urban infill project that sits on 26 acres. The 9th & Colorado redevelopment will be a mix of uses including residential, office, retail, restaurant, hotel and public space. The retail component will focus on creating a mix of retailers and restaurants, which will include national, regional and local businesses. The plan also includes the adaptive reuse of the existing iconic Research Bridge and the Nurses’ Dormitory.

Uncorked Kitchen will invite diners to cook what they eat

August 19, 2015

Chef Eric Robbins and his wife, Katie Robbins, are opening Uncorked Kitchen, a combination cooking class and dining experience,  at 8171 South Chester St., Centennial,  scheduled to open to the public in September.

“With Uncorked, we are creating a space where people learn to cook side by side through personal experience and collaboration,” Eric said. “The energy the teamwork will breed – it’s exciting.”

Participants should get ready to roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty and experience how eating is only half the fun. Guests will practice basic to advanced kitchen skills using the finest and freshest ingredients while expanding their knowledge of the latest food trends.  “The experience here is one part cooking plus one part dining which equals 100 percent fun,” Eric said. “Our programs are social with interactive teamwork, and you will walk away with all the skills to make the recipe at home.”

Coaching combined with a collaborative atmosphere means that from foodies to newbies, Uncorked Kitchen’s innovative concept caters to everyone no matter the level of their culinary chops.  Adults can choose a culinary adventure for some me-time and meet new people, come with friends or reserve a kitchen for a customized private cooking party. Through camps, parties, and after-school classes, kids can experience hands-on, healthy fun with talented instructors. Businesses can host groups of colleagues or clients and cook up some camaraderie and forget about the setup and clean up.

For details and information about the grand opening and to pre-purchase tickets to the first adult events and kids after school classes, visit www.uncorkedkitchen.com.

New Denver-based mobile app supports nonprofits, schools, merchants

August 17, 2015

Givella, a new Denver-based mobile application launched this summer to support schools, nonprofit organizations and merchants, beginning with Denver-organizations and expanding nationally in the coming months.

Givella’s free mobile app is a frictionless way to raise money for a school or non-profit. Givella users simply download the app, select their preferred nonprofit and shop or dine at one of Givella’s partner merchants. The merchant then donates a portion of the transaction to the customer’s nonprofit; and with current contributions ranging from 5 to 10 percent, the donations can really add up.

The app is available in the iTunes App Store, and currently includes almost 30 participating merchants and nonprofits in the Northwest Denver community. The company intends to add many more, including national partners, before the end of the year.

Created by former executives from Whole Foods Market and nonprofits like I Have a Dream, Givella should alleviate a lot of the pain of fundraising for schools and non-profits, including resource challenges and “fundraising fatigue,” while also driving new business into merchants.

Comida opening third cantina at Stanley Marketplace

August 17, 2015

Comida, the popular Mexican spot with locations in Longmont and at The Source in Denver, is the latest restaurant to join the growing list at Stanley Marketplace, which will open its doors at 2501 Dallas St. in Aurora next year.

The roughly 3,500-square-foot Stanley space will feature an outdoor patio overlooking Westerly Creek and the development’s large green space. This location will feature the same daily cocktail and food menus as the other cantinas, and will include antojitos (or “street snacks”), tacos, tortas, tostadas and more. Also, like the other locations, unique creations from the head chef at the new Stanley location will also be available.

“I am really proud of my first two locations; they are part of communities that stretch people’s ideas of how dining and living can be experienced,” said Rayme Rossello, Comida’s owner. “They both thrive because of the energy and creativity that surround them. The same feels true for the Stanley; Stanley Marketplace is about community, and it’s about fun. I like both of those things a lot.”

Developed by Stapleton-based Flightline Venture, the more than 22-acre, 100,000-square-foot Stanley Marketplace was once Stanley Aviation headquarters, where airplane ejector seats were engineered and manufactured. The same innovative spirit that once filled this building has been harnessed to offer community members an urban marketplace featuring goods and services from local and independent businesses, as well as a spacious community park and indoor/outdoor event venue. Information about additional restaurant tenants and programming will continue to be released in the coming weeks.

“We’re extremely excited that Comida will be among the dining offerings at Stanley,” said Flightline Ventures partner Mark Shaker. “It will be a huge asset to the development – and the surrounding communities.”
