Boom! is a celebration of the upside of aging

September 18, 2015

Boom!, a celebration of the upside of aging with Boomers Leading Change in Health,  is holding an event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 3 at The Inverness Hotel & Conference Center, 200 Inverness Drive West, Englewood.

Boomers Leading Change in Health is part of a larger, national movement created to provide adults 50-plus with meaningful volunteer opportunities that will enable and empower them to affect significant social change in nine local communities across the United States.

Here in Denver, the focus is on health and healthcare – but partners across the country are focusing on other important issues like homelessness, literacy, access to healthy foods in under-served neighborhoods, at-risk youth and the environment.

The organization’s mission is to harness the experience, energy and conviction of adults 50-plus to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families across the seven-county Metro Denver area by creating healthier, better-informed, more confident healthcare consumers and improving access to healthcare for all.

Arts Brookfield opens new abstract art exhibit

September 18, 2015

On Wednesday, Arts Brookfield opened the Abstract Perfection exhibit at 1801 California. With monumental abstract works by three artists, the exhibit depicts an act of vigorous and spontaneous personal expression. The opening reception for the exhibit will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at 1801 California.

Andra Archer curated the art for the show, which features artists Andy Berg, Amy Metier and John Wood.

Archer describes Abstract Perfection as “a unique genre that embodies three tenants: the physical act of expressive mark-making, the visual expression of non-objective imagery, and a sense of the intuitive or the connection to the unconscious.”

She further explains that for the artist, the process is almost more important than the final painting, and for the viewer, the painting becomes an experience through the artistic process to the artist’s unconscious.

The show runs through Nov. 13 and is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The exhibit and reception are open to the public and free to attend.

Denver Chalk Art Festival branching out to Centennial

September 16, 2015

Since 2003, the Denver Chalk Art Festival has attracted more than 200,000 visitors who come to watch the asphalt along Larimer Square transform into a bright and colorful street museum. This month, this event will host the first Centennial Chalk Art Festival in Centennial Center Park on the 19th and 20th.

This event, which showcases the Italian art of street painting that dates back to the 1600’s, features more than 150 professional, amateur and student artists who spend hours on their hands and knees recreating works of art using vivid pastel chalks.

Spectators will watch as the intricate chalk paintings come to life, while enjoying live music, food and beverages. Visitors also have the opportunity to interact with the artists as they work.

In 2014, USA Today and Money Magazine ranked Centennial among the “Best Places to Live” in America. As one of the safest cities in Colorado, Centennial is a great place to live, work and play – a natural fit for the chalk art festival expansion. The 11-acre, award winning, Centennial Center Park is the newest venue for this art festival.

Event details:

* 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

* Location is Centennial Center Park (13050 E Peakview Avenue, just off of Arapahoe Road three miles east of I-25).

The Centennial Chalk Art Festival will showcase Madonnaro Mark Hollenbeck (professionals in this medium are called Madonnari); an award-winning street painter, Mark will draw a 12’ x 12’ street masterpiece.

* Guests can enjoy a variety of refreshments and live music while perusing the amazing chalk art.

* For a small donation, children will receive sidewalk chalk and take to the pavement.

* Some of the art students from across the seven-county area of Denver return to compete on behalf of their high school for cash prizes, which are awarded to purchase art supplies for their respective programs. The Youth Challenge is presented by The Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design.

* IKEA Centennial presents your opportunity to add some art of your own by capturing the beauty and color in the Centennial Chalk Art Festival Capture the Color Photo Contest.

Upload your photo entry to the Denver Chalk Art Festival Facebook page by Oct. 2. Entries will be displayed by IKEA Centennial’s Restaurant FAMILY kiosk for voting. Visit IKEA Centennial from Oct. 5–26 to vote for your favorite photo. Your vote enters you to win a $300 IKEA gift card and the winning photographer will receive two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines. Both winners will be announced on the Denver Chalk Art Festival Facebook page on Oct. 28.

* Attendees have the opportunity to text their vote for their favorite artist for the prestigious People’s Choice Award.
