Laugh line: Today’s eavesdropping

October 30, 2015

Eavesdropping on a man on Facebook: “One of the things about Yelp that makes me laugh is a one star review of a restaurant that starts out ‘I’ve been here a dozen times and it always sucks.’ Here’s a tip: If it sucks after the third visit, stop going there.”

Thrillist picks Best Sports Bar in Every NFL City

October 28, 2015

Thrillist.com, the website that never met a “best” list it didn’t like, is now declaring “The Best Sports Bar in Every NFL City”.

Here’s what Thrillist said:

“…Keep in mind we’re not just talking about the best Giants bar in New York or the best Cowboys bar in Dallas; rather, these are the best places to watch sporting events based on the outrageous number of TVs, the deliciousness of the food and drink, and the all-around attributes that make them places we want to party on game day.”

Best Broncos bar? The Tavern Downtown, 1949 Market St., according to Thrillist.

“Because it’s an official sponsor of the Broncos, one of the perks is that it runs a season-long contest where two bar patrons are whisked off to the Broncos sideline to hang out before every home game. Most people won’t get to watch Peyton warm up, though, so one major draw for everyone else is the massive 11,000-square-foot rooftop patio, which offers views of both Coors Field and beautiful people enjoying the Mile High sunshine. And since the Rockies and Nuggets disappoint fans six months out of the year, billiards, foosball, mini bowling, local beers and chicken nachos can distract those poor Coloradans in their time of need.”

Bar Dough opens in LoHi

October 28, 2015

When celebrated chef Max MacKissock first announced his next venture Bar Dough in LoHi, I thought the former Squeaky Bean chef was opening another pizza place. Sure, there’s pizza on the menu, but there’s so much more.

More as in pasta dishes, grilled half chicken, a 20-ounce ribeye, scampi, meatballs, olives and salads. The menu, which is oh so Italian, includes a handy glossary of terms for those of us who need it.

The newly opened restaurant is a partnership between Juan and Katie Padro (Highland Tap & Burger) and MacKissock.

Located at 2227 W. 32nd Ave., Bar Dough is open for lunch Monday through Saturday, Sunday brunch and dinner nightly. More information at www.bardoughdenver.com.

Sarto’s celebrates first year with special event tonight

October 28, 2015

Sarto’s, a metropolitan Italian eatery in Denver’s burgeoning Jefferson Park neighborhood, is celebrating its first birthday from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, with an event true to the bustling, social dining scene in Italy’s city centers.

For $60 per person, guests can enjoy authentic Cicchetti — an Italian tradition of social “snacking” and small bites, an oyster and Prosecco bar, hand-carved charcuterie and cheeses, a wine tasting room, hand-rolled chocolate truffles, signature cocktails, a roaming risotto bar, whole-roasted Cinghiale (wild boar) and more.

With reference to the Italian word for “tailor,” Sarto’s provides a tailored dining experience in a sociable drink and food environment. For tickets to the celebration, call 303-455-1400.

Kleinman set to open long-anticipated The Inventing Room

October 28, 2015

Winning season two of the CNBC competition “Restaurant Startup” in March gave creative Denver chef Ian Kleinman the extra incentive he needed to open his first restaurant. On Halloween, The Inventing Room, an imaginative confectioner, opens at 2020 Lawrence.

The space will be open from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday with free nitro kettle corn all day. Even though winning the “Shark Tank”-like competition on “Restaurant Startup” gave Kleinman the opportunity for celebrity chef and restaurant operator Tim Love to invest in The Inventing Room, Kleinman opted to eschew the financial backing and go it alone.

Kleinman, who is best known for molecular gastronomy – a way of chemically altering the texture of food primarily with liquid nitrogen – has been perfecting his craft and wowing crowds through his catering company.

The sweet shop will feature composed confections such as a compressed mango and strawberry kabob with salted carmel and chocolate, a carrot cake cookie ice cream sandwich with toasted marshmallow and cream cheese ice cream dipped in liquid nitrogen and a robot that will make chocolate truffles.

“I have always opened places for other people,” he said. “This is something I’ve dreamed about for a while so I will have as much fun as I possibly can.”
