BLACKTIE-COLORADO.COM

“I WANT TO PICK WOMEN IN CHARGE OF THEIR OWN FATE’ Academy-Award-winning actress Geena Davis gave an amusing and passionate keynote speech during The Women’s Foundation of Colorado 25th anniversary luncheon Friday at The Colorado Convention Center, Penny Parker writes for Blacktie-Colorado. “The film that had the most impact on my life was Thelma and Louise,” Davis told the packed room, which erupted in applause. “First, I had to get cast. The movie was already cast, but they kept changing actors and in the end there were three Thelmas and Louises. My agent called every week for a year.”

GEENA DAVIS EVENT grossed $928K.

GEENA DAVIS CITES the feminist implications of “I Dream of Jeannie.”

HIGH-PROFILE SPECIAL MASTER: Kenneth Feinberg, the man called in to navigate compensation issues in nearly every American crisis, was appointed Friday as the “special master” to oversee the distribution of money donated to the Aurora Victim Relief Fund. At a late afternoon news conference at the Capitol, Feinberg said the nearly $5 million in air jordan 1 donations for victims of the Aurora theater shooting should be delivered “quickly without restriction.”

Blacktie Beat: Aurora Mental Health Center Annual Spring Luncheon featuring the Water Coolers

May 9, 2012

The 8th annual Spring benefit luncheon for the Aurora Mental Health Center was a rolicking success as attendees enjoyed a great meal and side splitting comedy.  Rachel Nunez, board member, welcomed the crowd and introduced Ed Greene of CBS4 news anchor who served as emcee.  Dr. Randy Stith, CEO and executive director of the Aurora Mental Health Center, talked about the history and mission of the center and thanked the supporters who contribute to their work. Dr. Stith has been the executive directer of Aurora Mental Health for 34 years.Rachel Nunez returned to the stage and talked about the Gay and Lesbian Fund’s generous matching dollars contribution.

Hilarity was served up by the Watercoolers, a song and nike cortez dance troop, with their satirical look at the working world of today. A female traveller sang “Delay Come and me Wanna Go Home” when her flight is delayed, in a parody of a Belafonte classic.  The IT Cowboy had a duel with technology and the intracacies of automated helplines were explored. Tom Flanagan, President of Citywide and Steve Hogan, Mayor of Aurora, were called to the stage to practice teamwork, to the tune of “YMCA.” It was a fun and whimsical way to say thank you for all the support and commitment of those involved with AUMHC.

Aurora Mental Health Center helped over 14,000 clients last year alone. The month of May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and the perfect time for the center to celebrate its success and move forward into the future.

It’s a big country, and Blacktie covers a lot of it

Above: San Antonio’s Taste of the Northside drew 8,000 people.

Everyone thinks of Blacktie as a Colorado success story, but in fact it’s helping people nationally.

Blacktie Beat: Chelsea’s Gala 2012

On Thursday, May 3, 2012, the 3rd Annual Chelsea’s Gala was hosted by the Chelsea Hutchison Foundation at Cielo at Castle Pines, Colorado.

The Chelsea Hutchison Foundation is a Colorado non-profit corporation formed to help individuals who have epilepsy. The main focus is to raise funds for trained seizure-response dogs that may be able to detect an oncoming seizure and provide warnings, and/or respond after the onset. Many of the seizure-response dogs were in attendance at this year’s event, and special guests Robert and Amber Marsh talked about how Robert’s seizure-response dog has saved him from crossing a busy street when he was about to have a seizure.

The Chelsea Hutchison Foundation also provides Emfit movement monitors, which are the latest technology for monitoring an individual who may experience seizures during sleep, nike kobe 9 elite gs which a caregiver or family member should be alerted to. Special guest Ann Speer told guests about how she slept on the floor in her son’s room for four years, monitoring him for seizures during the night, until the Chelsea Hutchison Foundation was able to provide her family with an Emfit monitor. In the past two years, they have provided grants for 26 seizure-response dogs and have provided 43 Emfit monitors.

The Foundation is named for the Hutchison’s beloved daughter, Chelsea, who died in her sleep during a seizure in April of 2009. SUDEP (Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy) was the cause of her death. During the six years that Chelsea had seizures, no one ever told her family that a seizure could take her life, other than through an accidental fall or drowning. As a result this omission, the Chelsea Hutchison Foundation informs those living with epilepsy of the risks and raises awareness of SUDEP so that no other families are blind-sided.

Guests enjoyed a heavy hors d’oeuvres buffet by Occasions Catering while browsing the silent auction. Once again, Deb Sheppard of KOSI was the emcee along with Jeremy Jojola of 9 News. Gary Corbett of Corbett Auctions hosted the live auction. This year, Connor Doran, the young man living with epilepsy who was a finalist in the top 12 of The America’s Got Talent 2010 was the special guest and performer. Connor wowed the audience with his indoor kite flying. He dedicated the second performance to Chelsea, and flew his kite to one of her favorite singers, Frank Sinatra.

Blacktie Beat: Denver Derby Party Is Colorado Tradition

May 8, 2012

The throngs of people who attended Denver’s Derby Party wore great hats and fancy threads, and the event had a new home: the newly renovated “14th Street entertainment district” outside the Denver Performing Arts Complex. See all the party pictures here. — Penny Parker

At least 4,500 people attended the Derby Party in Denver on Saturday–the largest Kentucky Derby party in the US outside of the actual event in Kentucky.

By Nancy Koontz and Pamela Cress
BLACKTIE-COLORADO

“I’ll Have Another” might have been the horse that won the official 2012 Kentucky Derby, but we believe Sandra Carrillo, the recipient of this year’s “Sean “Ranch” Lough Memorial Scholarship was as big a winner! A senior at Arrupe Jesuit High School, Sandra won a full-ride scholarship to Colorado State University which is the alma mater of Sean Lough and many of the founders and supporters of the original Denver Derby Party, “the party with a purpose.”

With 4,500 well-dressed, behatted guests, this year’s – often imitated, never equaled – event was held at a new venue, the newly renovated Denver Performing Arts Complex in the “14th Street entertainment district” and was the most elaborate to date. The 11th annual Derby Party, benefiting the Sean “Ranch” Lough Memorial Scholarship, was held on May 5th in a vibrant Downtown Denver! The newly updated 14th Street area around the Performing Arts Complex was tented and nike lebron 11 closed down to transform the city streets and buildings into a dynamic indoor/outdoor space.

The focal point of this year’s fundraiser was the Colorado Convention Center corner and the largest LED display in the nation outside of Times Square, which carried the Churchill Downs Kentucky Derby on NBC. The Derby Party 2012 also incorpored the elegant Ellie Caulkins Opera House and part of the Galleria Theatre at the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Close to 5,000 people experienced what has been recognized as the largest derby party outside of Kentucky in this very unique event space. Even out-of-town visitors walking the streets of downtown Denver were quite impressed by the creative hats, dresses, pinstripes and plaids on display outside and around the event.

Also on display – on screens in the main tent – were live-action cam shots of people arriving at the party. Food and drinks were their usual ample and tasty. The hats and clothing seen at The Denver Derby Party might have riveled Churchill Downs this year! More flowers, colors, ribbons and feathers were seen than ever, with several Mexican-themed hats in recognition of Cinco de Mayo, which also took place the same day.

Sean Lough (AKA “Ranch”) was a dear friend, brother and son who tragically passed away in June of 2001 as a result of a mountain biking accident. A full-ride scholarship is awarded each year to a young individual, such as Sandra Carrillo (a first generation college student), who exemplifies the qualities “Ranch” possessed: a high GPA, an economic need, and, most of all, a generous personality and a love for life.

The Derby Party raised an estimated $400,000 this year and operates solely on volunteer time, energy and commitment, so there are very few operating expenses. The founders of this event are proud to say that 100% of the proceeds benefit the scholarship given in the name of Sean Lough. The Sean “Ranch” Lough Foundation hosts and committee members volunteer their time, and the scholarship funds are deposited into CSU’s 501(c)3 and are managed by the school’s endowment manager.
The hosts and their sponsors would like to tell everyone who attended that they are grateful for their continued support and – see you next year “rain or shine!”

A sea of fantastic hats and brilliant bonnets topped 600 heads of ladies attending the 7th Women with Hattitude event at the Seawell Ballroom. From simple and elegant to intricate and lavish, the parade of hats never ceases to amaze for this occasion.

Supporting the Women’s Voices Fund, the event helps to fund the commissioning, development and production of new plays by women and the hiring of more women as lead artists at the Denver Center Theatre Company. nike zoom hyperrev Associate memberships to the Women’s Voice Fund are also a wonderful way to give to the group, starting at $300 annually or a founding membership at $5,000 payable over 5 years.

From the celebration of supporting the voices of women to the beautiful singing voice of Mary Louise Lee, this year’s Act 7 was just as show-stopping as ever.
