Visionbox Studio puts Kardashian spin on Chekov’s ‘Three Sisters’

July 31, 2015

Fresh on the high heels of Caitlyn Jenner’s spin-off television premiere, “I Am Cait,” Denver’s Visionbox Studio has begun work on an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s popular 1900 play “Three Sisters” – with a 2015 Kardashian twist.

Instead of Chekov’s Olga, Masha, and Irina, the three sisters are Kourtney, Kim and Khloe.  Instead of Moscow, the girls dream of Miami.  And instead of Natasha, Kris Ivanovna takes on the role of the overbearing head of the household.

Helming the adaptation is Jennifer McCray Rincon, Visionbox’s Founding artistic director, who served almost two decades as the head of acting for the National Theatre Conservatory in Denver.  She now leads Visionbox, a non-profit that trains Denver actors of all ages, levels and backgrounds and sometimes develops new work.

“It may sound crazy,” Rincon said, “but the parallels between Chekov’s Prozorov family and the Kardashian family are very striking.  They are both living in times of transition, when the meaning of life is no longer clear and many struggle with the disconnects and unfulfilled longings that are timeless fixtures of the human experience.

“Our contemporary take on the play allows the humor, ridiculousness, and satire that Chekhov originally intended to come to the forefront. Too often performances of Chekhov are slow, boring and just not funny.  That is not what he ever intended.  We are revealing a deeper truth about the play by connecting it with our own ridiculous, insane but human contemporary world. “

Monday’s staged reading is open to the public.  Doors open at 6 pm.  Suggested donation: $10.  Food and drinks will be served.  All proceeds will support classes and programming at Visionbox Studio.
