Friends First gala celebrates empowering teens

April 10, 2015

Friends First will celebrate 22 years of empowering teens across Colorado during the Among the Stars Red Carpet Gala from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the University of Denver’s Cable Center.

The evening will be co-hosted by Xavier Soller, the in-game host for the Denver Nuggets. The gala event will include appetizers, cocktails, a performance by Friends First youth and dancing. Live and silent auctions will raise money for Friends First’s teen and community programs. Auction items will include a weekend getaway to the mountains, day passes to Elitch Gardens, a trip to Disneyland and more.

“I look forward to this gala so much. Not only because we have a blast, but also because we raise money to help kids all over Denver,” said Elycia Cook, executive director of Friends First. “As a child born in the inner city to a single teen mom, many of the successes I’ve had in my life are a direct result of the power of mentoring. I truly believe that mentoring saves lives. I know it saved mine.”

In the last fiscal year, Friends First served 694 teens in their Stars mentoring program and provided positive youth development classroom instruction to 2,179 students. The Stars peer mentors, along with other Friends First volunteers, contributed 5,553 volunteer hours to the programs.

Tickets for the Friends First Red Carpet Gala can be purchased at the door for $90.
