When Buzz Williams, Virginia Tech’s first-year basketball coach and former assistant at CSU, slipped on an orange and maroon harlequin-print sweater during halftime of the Hokies’ Monday night game against Georgia Tech, the fashion statement made quite a stir.
The Twittersphere and national television exposure found the sweater’s creator, Scott Barber, in Fort Collins admiring his custom handiwork. According to a story in The Coloradoan, the lambs wool garment in Hokie colors caught the designing eye of news organizations including NBC Sports.
“People go crazy over Twitter for a lot of things, but not usually (over) us,” Barber told the newspaper. “Barber, who owns Scott Barber Apparel in Fort Collins, made the sweater special for Williams and sent it to him last week.
Barber struck up a friendship with Williams when he was at Colorado State University in the early 2000s. Williams has since coached at Texas A&M, The University of New Orleans and Marquette before being named Virginia Tech’s head coach last year.”
“‘Buzz is a clotheshorse,’ Barber said. So when Williams asked him for something in Virginia Tech colors, Barber agreed, designed it, had it made and sent it off.
“Barber initially created the piece with the intention of making more to benefit Williams’ charity, Buzz’s Bunch, which gives children with disabilities the opportunity to play and fall in love with basketball. That’s now been kicked into overdrive. Barber said he’s had more than 200 people register for one of their own and is in the process of designing a women’s version and similar lightweight vest.
“As for the possibility of a Rams version, Barber said he’s been meaning to meet CSU basketball coach Larry Eustachy, and might add a green and gold version to the ranks of his show-stopping sweaters.”
Now, the designing man needs to link up with pro golfer John Daly‘s Loudmouth clothing line for a Hokies pants version to complete the outfit.
