Metro State teaches brewing basics in new class

Are you feeling a bit beery as Denver celebrates Denver Beer Fest this week?

Joining the beer bandwagon at Metro State University, which is offering a class from 5:30 to 7:30 this evening on Ales Lagers and Beyond.

Taste and learn about the major styles of beer and how to analyze flavor, pair with food and serve in glassware that maximizes your enjoyment of beer. The course fee includes instruction from one of the world’s foremost experts in craft beer, all beer and food samples and a craft beer glass to take home.

You’ll be tasting Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout, Great Divide Showdown Rye IPA, Funkwerks Saison, Fate Belgian IPA and a selection from Dry Dock at the MSU Denver’s Hospitality Learning Center, Demonstration Theater Room 207 (on the south side of the Marriott Springhill Suites hotel 1190 Auraria Pkwy., Denver, 80204). Cost is $35.

During this two-hour session, participants will:

  • Taste and recognize the characteristics of beer styles such as lager, ale, IPA, stout, pilsner, and more.
  • Learn about beer styles of major beer regions of the world including Germany, the British Isles, Belgium, and America.
  • Engage your senses in learning to analyze flavors of beer and food. Learn how to select the right glass to increase your enjoyment of beer.
  • Sample food items with their best corresponding beers to gain the knowledge to create your own pairings at home.

Instructor Scott Kerkmans was a professional brewer for more than four years (most recently at Alaskan Brewing Company) and helped start “Draft Magazine”. He was in the group of the first five certified cicerones in the world and is an annual judge at Denver’s Great American Beer Festival.

Kerkmans now trains brewers, distributors and retailers around the world with his company Beer Conscious Training and is soon launching an education piece for homebrewers called Homebrew IQ.
